Most coaches don't have the backbone or administration support to say no to a parent playing mid-six figures per year.

In terms of benefits of being on the varsity roster, it really depends on how the coach manages drills and reps in practice. Many coaches give very few reps to backups (I know one in particulate who has a 4:1 ratio on individual or small sided drills, which is similar to how most colleges do it) , other practice them as almost as much as starters.
