Fact- it has happened

Also realize it is not always middle school age to varsity, sometimes middle school age to JV. Many kids age 13/14 can handle a small hop to 15/16. Agree on varsity however, physical gap gets more significant.

If it was such a good idea to move 8th graders (2017) up to JV (mostly 2015 starters) or Varsity (2014/13s) then why don't the 2017 club team parents (including the mighty turds) demand that their club program directors have their little darlings consistently play up against 2015 or 2014 teams in the summer? Answer.... Its a health risk and a lawsuit waiting to happen. Ask Joe D or Mike C why they doesn't have their 2017s play that far up..come back with the answer.

Worst example ever. Comparing a WHOLE travel team to playing UP in elite club games/tournaments where most of the roster is highly talented players. As opposed to most JV and Varsity programs where a good chunk of the roster are weaker players that aren't mega stars (including the Garden City and Manhasset's of the world). And as far as asking Joe D or Mike C about their 2017 teams playing UP, well there is no need to ask because they DO. And they both WIN while doing it.

The only reason they do ok playing up is that most of the kids should be in the grade above anyway. That said, it's one thing for mike c and joe d to play up one grade in the summer which in their case may be the same age but its another to have these little prodigies playing up against 2 or 3 year older kids. The physics don't work Einstein.
