The issue at hand is that the players are the ones being punished. Regardless if you think they were going to win or lose, players who did nothing wrong are being punished for the actions of the administration, parents, and player. Win as a team lose as a team. I agree with this 100%. Yet this type of infraction is one that has been made by the coach and administration of the school. The blame lays on them and not the players on the team who did nothing wrong. To say that they (the program) should be punished next year, in my opinion is too harsh a penalty because the ones being impacted (the players) had nothing to do with the infraction. This is not like banning a college team from playoffs or games where millions of dollars of TV contracts and bonuses are at stake for the school. The kids play the game because they love it. In the end the ones losing out are the ones who really put everything into a season and wanted one last chance to play Chaminade. Both programs lost out here.

so a parent holds his kid back so he can be bigger but still has his kid play. 5 years of high school ball. im sure this isnt the only school this is happening in right now. seasons over, wheres the deterrence. suspend the program for next year. the kid skipped 8th grade...wasn't holding back. Went to SA with his brother. Principle offered him to come to school for 5 yrs not the parent you can't repeat a grade at St. As or Chami for that matter. I highly doubt the principal offered to break the rule for him Let me get this straight ... this player finished 7th grade and the following school year went to 9th grade in Saint Anthony's. Finished 9th grade and went on to 10th grade. So at this point this player repeats 10th grade, which would now bring him back in the grade he should have been in and continues on that track to this year's graduation. Understood he played all 5 years in but there are plenty of long island players who play varsity in 8th grade and will end up playing 5 years of high school ball. He seems to be of age for a varsity player...not a hold back....plus he skipped 8th grade. Lets move on!!! This doesn't make sense. There are plenty of 8th graders who play JV and some who play varsity? Is the issue that he was a 9th grader and played 5 years? Like someone else said, how do kids who legitimately get left back get to play a 5th year? Your four year clock for HS level play (freshman, JV, and/or Varsity level play) does NOT start until you actually reach 9th grade. If you play at any HS level in 8th grade, it does not count as the 4 year clock has not yet begun. Why is that so hard to follow? I haven't seen anything regarding an 8th grader who had to repeat 8th grade AND played both years of 8th grade at the HS level, but absent any specifics to this, it would seem that such a SA could effectively play 6 years of HS level ball.

If you get left back in HS in any year, you CANNOT play more than 4 years of HS level ball.

SJB Admin promising change out of all coach's for next season in the boys lax program. There have been many complaints for last three years. Biggest complaint is with the D coach and his son. Special treatment for son, O coaches can't yell at him, while all the better players get there fair share of tongue lashings, he coaches his son and goes against the other coaches openly for selfish reasons, big distraction for the team. This team had some talent but because of the selfish father & son they won 3 games. The D coach is a big head case and is disliked by the other coaches but the head coach didn't reign him in. So there are all suppose to be going??? The exact reason why High School fathers' should not coach their sons. This was a 3 year disaster for SJB as a team. Father was a completed nut case. Giving his son every advantage he could. Funny thing is the reality is he only hurt the kid. The kid is really at a disadvantage because of the fathers controlling ways. This has been a big team distraction and caused an issue on a daily bases. Unfortunately this coach is well known in the travel lax circuit and caused many issues favoring his son. Had his son play when he should have, extra playing time ect. I am sure that is why he chose to coach SJB, so he could manipulate the situation in his son's favor. This is not uncommon in youth sports but he went above and beyond with coaching HS. Shame on SJB for letting this happen.

It was self-reported. If there was malicious intent then St. Anthony's could have just not reported it. Read the statement from the AD before you spew your rhetoric. It take about 30 seconds of Google research, but it's easier to just assume the worst and blame everyone.

No doubt on that. C-quot not the team they were last year. Coaching is weak there, last years team was an anomaly of real good players who played together for years. Now that real coaching will come in to play it will be same old C-quot. He is a terrible coach! Quack, Quack, Quack.

Agreed if you fail you are not suppose to be eligible. But you are talking St A. The rule is grade and age. The kid could have aged out if he has an early birthday. You are only eligible to play 3 years of ball when you enter the 10th grade. Kids who get left back are not eligible because you would be seeing many get left back in 12th grade if they did not get recruited. Reason why most if not all hold back in 8th grade.
Prep schools are full all the time.

Nobody cares about Catholic league lacrosse. Sure a bunch of the best players go there, but quite frankly outside of the Catholic league people nobody gives a damn. It's all about making you above everyone else. Then after HS nobody in your town even remembers you. In fact most people think you are obnoxious that you thought you were better than everyone else. Go Wyandanch!

I was explained this several times by my wife who is a hs AP. Stupid and confusing!

The bigger question is why it took them until the end of the season to report this, the coach, AD and front office should be verifying these, no? Everybody on LI would have known about this and screamed bloody murder if this was a top flight player, all the kids from his summer team and middle school would have known about it. This was NOT cheating or some sort of systematic corruption, it was an over site. The kid is not a starter and they were not cheating to win games. I have no inside information but I would guess nobody knew about this and might have had something to do with graduation when somebody noticed that he had 5 years of lacrosse at the school. No investigation needed, no further punishment - I believe cancelling the game was not necessary. 100% agree. Total bs and what about a kid who play varsity since 8th grade is he now limited to 4 years? did they always have this rule? kids getting left back for grades now can't play sports? basketball and football would be in trouble nation wide if so. total bs- coach W and St Ants is class act all the way Time to get back to the Lax that really matters, NYS Championship season. Nobody gives a Rats [lacrosse] about the sissies depressed they can't play in a game that nobody but them cares about. The exciting games start tomorrow! Can't wait to see these boys battle it out!

I'm confused, I agree that if the rule in NYS is "four years" of play than they should accept punishment and move on. But what gets me is that you routinely see other top lacrosse schools that offer PG programs that play fifth year seniors or PG players and this seems to be just fine as it relates to rankings and recruiting. Just look at the rankings on Inside Lacrosse every year. Most of the top teams are playing fifth year kids anyway, not to mention that like St. Anthony's they recruit kids to play there and are not restricted to set geographic boundaries like the public schools. Isn't it time to have two classifications in the rankings, one for geographically restricted public schools and one for non geographically restricted private schools with PG kids. Not trying to take anything away from either school type but I think it would offer a more even playing field in determining rankings. Lets call it what it is, private and private PG schools have an upper hand both in geography of recruits as well as fifth year players on their rosters. It creates an uneven playing field. If private and private PG schools were in one classification and public schools were in another as it relates to rankings this incident wouldn't even be an issue. I am all for the teams crossing over and playing each other, but we need separate classifications at this point. 1). There are many public schools with hold backs/pg's what ever you want to call them on them. It is not only privates. 2). There is a NFHS (National Federation of State High Schools) rules which dictate the years of eligibility. I believe it states between year 9 and 12 you can only have 4 years of eligibility, the real scammers are those that repeat 8th (not skip 8th grade) to gain the 5 year. Many true privates aren't NFHS schools and don't following that rule. You want to get technical, there is a rule you can't play two games in one day. Not so sure the better public Ct schools play by that rule or else the dominoes would fall fast. 3). Lets not talk harp on geographic boundaries. The distance some towns across this state have are seemingly limitless. The schools with high enrollemet and lower enrollment both have competitive teams 4). Recruiting, yes coaches are involved with Club teams and can say hey why not come to my school. But as to actively recruit not to sure about that. Maybe the top 1% but who wouldnt reach out to see if interest is there. You are telling me some towns dont lure and reach out and say why dont you move here and we can have a special team, that happens as well. 5). Even playing field, How even is Wm playing against Lindy Sachem East Whitman Huntington. or Pequa vs Union Baldwin Oceanside Freeport How about playing competitive Li lacrosse. Stop the BS and make power ranking and then do a tournament of Champions Point 2 I doubt an school ever played 2 games in one day during HS season. As far as individual players, you need a full overnight before you can play a second game. You can dress and be on the bench but can't step on the field.

Horrible job by The League, St Anthony's, Chaminade AD, HS sports writers (Newsday and News12 - complete jokes) failing to stand up, and hold those responsible accountable... opposed to the kids looking to Compete in the final game of their HS career...

So basically, the league should have suspended the rules so the game could be played. Use that logic with all rules, hey I stole because I needed the money! Doesn't work, rules are black and white, not gray. The coaches at St. A did what was right. The league did what was right. Hopefully this never happens again. Case is closed.

The number of kids repeating grades is high school is relativity low But many of them are only repeating grade for athletics Shame on the parents and administion who turn a blind eye to it I think you are mistaken on this point, if you look nationally across all sports, i think you will find that many kids are held back, it may happen prior Middle School but it does happen. If a graduate is 18 at graduation, chances are, they are held back at some point in their schooling.

Actually they have some talent and I agree you cannot blame everything on the coaching staff but one county title back in 2001 is old and stale and they have had some tremendous talent over the years. They were up 7 - 5 with about 6 minutes left and lost. When they went up 7 - 5 wouldn't you tell you very good faceoff kid, no matter what win the draw and lets settle on offense. The kid won draw and went to cage, stripped from behind, back the other way and wham 7 - 6 game. There never seems to be a game plan and that always leads to turnovers. Time to make a change IMO

If a graduate is 18 at graduation, chances are, they are held back at some point in their schooling. incorrect - lots of kids born in November and all kids born in December, January, February, March, April, May and June (if birthday is before graduation date) will be 18 at Graduation my son was born in March will be 17 when he graduates. so you held your child back from kindergarten.

If I read one more word about the irrelevant Catholic school drama, I'm going to throw up! Can we please get back to real Lax? Some big games today!
I've got: Hills East by 2 Smithtown East by 4 Smithtown West by 3 WM by 5 I like West islip over Smithtown West. I dont mind hearing about the Catholic school stuff many of our sons friends are impacted. I think it was handled wrong, league should have immediately suspended player, let the team play then strip them of all wins. I liked two other posts, if correct Manhasset and Nisky are undefeated!!!

100% - great post. league officials (rules or not), failed to apply any sense of logic... Who in the world punishes kids for adults failures?? Horrible job by The League, St Anthony's, Chaminade AD, HS sports writers (Newsday and News12 - complete jokes) failing to stand up, and hold those responsible accountable... opposed to the kids looking to Compete in the final game of their HS career... So basically, the league should have suspended the rules so the game could be played. Use that logic with all rules, hey I stole because I needed the money! Doesn't work, rules are black and white, not gray. The coaches at St. A did what was right. The league did what was right. Hopefully this never happens again. Case is closed. I am sorry but the 1st post is spot on. The admin and coaches are the ones to blame not all the kids. Who really was punished in this situation? The players who did nothing wrong, that's who. These are kids playing for the love of the game. Not for money. Game should have been played as a scrimmage.

Southside upsets Wantagh with as horrible offside call in addition to the horrendous coaching of Wantagh HyE352not being to make adjustments Wantagh has been a huge disappointment. The coaching staff needs to go. They have had so much talent over the last 5-6 years and do well in spite of the horrible head coach. He can never coach a win in a big game. Don't know why the school keeps him around. Being a district gym teacher does not make you a coach. So bad!!! The talent is not there for Wantagh this year. They have not won a game against any of the top teams. Lost to Hewlett, Garden City, Manhassett. Coaching is always the way the parents blame a lost. Team is just not good this year. Wantagh didn't play anyone! When they did they lost. They almost lost against Seaford. How can you say it coaching?

As far as the past county titles they cant get past GC!
