Jim Beardmore has passed. He coached Severna Park High School to championships, was 1987 Goalie of the Year, a First Team All-American and the ACC Player of the Year. RIP.

So 33-45% of the Loyola kids wash out too, usually between soph and Jr year.

It's the price of doing business.

If you want to get on the field, go to any of the teams in the bottom half of the league. But don't expect to win any titles.

If you get washed out as you say, you arent that good and lacrosse wasnt your game anyway. Frankly, you should have realized that a few years ago. While the MIAA is a great league, they still need players. If you are a decent athlete and get on a good club and get good training, you are on a MIAA team, no matter top or bottom. Of course your ability will matter more at McD, BL then JC. MtSJ

Those numbers are huge. And they support the claim of over-recruiting. Rosters that size are unnecessary at the hs level.

If you need to bring in 32-43 kids in each class, you probably don't know what you are looking at when it comes to youth players, and you aren't very good at player development.

So just hoard and pick later.

Sp didn't go along with MM bc his kid was the top student and most mature kid in the middle school and did not need to reclass. Sp does not reclass strictly for sports like other schools allow. They also did not go along with MM's demand for more FA. He had a strong package, but MM went shopping for more. Good for McM and McD for all the success, but mad respect Sp for taking the high road and not selling their souls to the devil.

SP may not re-class students who are already matriculated, but they do re-class boys coming in from other schools (i.e., repeat 8th or 9th grade), and offer incentives including "merit" tuition discounts and a commitment to place an incoming freshman on varsity. This is widely known among SP lacrosse parents, and complaints to the administration have been ineffective in stopping it.

The MIAA knows that schools are increasingly doing this, but as it is run by the heads/coaches from the MIAA schools, don't expect anything to change.

With schools recruiting more highly talented/skilled out-of-state players to their boarding programs (BL & McD), other MIAA schools will adapt/flout the rules in order to remain somewhat competitive. Who knows where the recruiting arms race will be in a few years. Look at what went on at Gilman with football recruiting until the board/head finally put a stop to it (but not before they won 13 A conference football championships between 1996-2015).

Gone are the days when these schools played by the spirit of the MIAA rulebook, which expressly forbids athletic $$ in admissions. Now it seems to be the "whatever we can get away with in order to win" mentality is predominant.

The parity that gave us the great MIAA rivalries of the past is gone, replaced by rivalries not between coaches and teams, but between admissions offices and wealthy donors.

The only reason Sett and ST. Paul's guaranteed Freshman Varsity is their pipeline was VERY weak. No 26's and only 2 25's. They had to get a decent 27 class and Sett was only MIAA coach willing to guarantee a Varsity spot to get kids to the school

Zero chance he’s the only MIAA coach who has promised a varsity roster spot to an incoming freshman

Every MIAA coach has some song and dance. Is your sons spot in jeopardy with incoming freshman ?

They give money to the ones they want, and that's not all of 32-43 incoming freshman. It's max of 10-15, but probably more like 7-8.

There are some kids from the rest of the class that will develop later, work hard or weren't seen who will fill out the teams. The first 10 or so will do all the heavy lifting and they are known before they walk in the door.

Agreed. There is no benefit to "hoarding" players unless they are top players and there aren't that many top players. If we assume there are 100 "top players" per class, that means each of BL, CHC, LB, McD, St. Mary's, Spalding, St. Paul's, GP, SJC, etc. get < 10 per class.

The rest are there for the opportunity and everything else that comes with playing high level lacrosse. Maybe it isn't for them, that's ok too.

Knowing close family and friends who are getting significant money at those programs, they most certainly are recruiting numbers, not talent.

Families are free to do what they think is best. And a discounted tuition rate might be worth it.

But stop crying in the stands and on BOTC when your kid doesn't sniff field for 4 years.

The parents should know what they are getting into. With those numbers, the vast majority of the kids won't be good enough to see much playing time.

It's not a scandal. It's just common sense reality.

If your son has any talent and has drive, he can play in the MIAA. Yes there are some very talented players, but majority who play are only decent athletes, but have the drive to do well.

The biggest problem is that the majority of High School students playing lacrosse, are only driven so much.

Talent assessment.

That, and it is a great way for the owners to make some extra cash.

More the latter than the former I'm afraid.

Money for people running it and some playing time and enjoyment for players. I have a bridge to sell you, if you think this is for assessment or recruiting.

Main thing why let a good High School thing go without seeing if you can capitalize on it with more money.

Waste of time and money.

Play with your clubs this summer and take a vacation with the family.

Good to know. If you’re son wants to play in College, do
They get recruited during tournaments with their club teams or high school?

JV NHSLS

Will you get recruited - nope.

Will you get an introductory glimpse at actual high school lacrosse - yup.

At this point - any High school sanctioned and supported lacrosse activity is something you should do.

Otherwise, I’m hearing the bench is getting cold and could use some warming.

Interesting - I always assumed it was a way for high school teams to get in organized team activities/games out of season. I never thought recruiting was part of the goal. Either way, it’s a huge money maker for the organizers.

Club for most. Coaches spend all summer and fall at the better tournaments recruiting. Not all tournaments are created equal and it is a numbers game. Play for a club that consistently puts you in front of coaches. Coaches will show up in numbers to watch top clubs battle. If your club plays in B level tournaments like Aloha, good luck. Go to the 2026 division of whatever tournament you are at and check the sidelines where the top teams are playing, if you don’t see coaches for the good matchups, you aren’t at a good event. NHSLS, both fall and summer, are good, IL runs some OK recruiting tournaments. NLF, Crabfeast, NAL, Naptown and the like on the east coast always a draw the best clubs and coaches. If your kid is head and shoulders above everyone else in high school competition in a weak league, they will get some attention, but will need to back it up at the club level or at recruiting events. If your son is an MIAA student, they don’t need club, but coaches want to see kids compete in the summer as well. As important as anything else is having your son work with or play for a coach who has the ear of college coaches.

Thought there was a national search for a new head coach? But st Mary’s just hired a new OC seems strange. And we wonder why St Mary’s is a dumpster fire. Poor leadership at the school.

Lacrosse program is a shell of its former self. Many former players just shake their head in disbelief. I see StM heading to bottom soon with JC and MtSJ

I, for one, am shocked - SHOCKED - that the biggest catholic school in town carries tons of players on its rosters and that the coach plays favorites including all 43 of his children to come through the program.

In five years theyll be lucky to still be in the A conference.. sad to see the direction that once solid program is now headed with the “nationwide” search
