In the High School thread, there should be no talk of holdbacks. Most every team has players from all 4 grades playing on the Varsity team. If your son cannot compete, then reevaluate his playing ability... Why should there be no talk of this? Its a major shift in this and other sports. There are huge differences physically between a Freshman and a 20 year old still in high school. There are no 20 year olds playing. Stop being ridiculous. St John’s Sophomores laid the wood to St Anthony’s seniors….

Hold backs are everywhere. 10th graders driving cars to high school. 24 year old star players at the college level. In fact...hold backs are usually the stand out players at the HS and college level. What does it mean? Who knows. Who cares. Enjoy your kid's lacrosse journey. Maybe the hold backs also over index in trips to therapy when they are in their 40's because they look back on their childhood and realize their parent's tortured them? LOL.

most Prep schools have 20 year old Seniors .. their freshman are on age for public schools.. That's a fact!!! They Still are good lax players. Just be honest about the true reality of the situation

Right from the MIAA handbook no 20 year old senoirs.. 19 yes, not 20
60. Student Eligibility: Age A student shall be under 19 years of age, but may compete during the remainder of the school year, provided that student’s 19th birthday occurs on or after September 1 of that year. For Freshman competition only, a student shall be under 16 years of age but may compete during the remainder of the school year provided that the sixteenth birthday occurs on or after September 1 of that year. Principals must exercise great care in determining age of contestants, and in all doubtful cases, must secure birth certificates from the town clerk of the pupil’s place of birth.

— If you play at a prep school governed by NEPSAC you can enter your senior year as a 19 year old, turn 20 after September first, ...which is every kid just about so please..

I have a kid on the top NEPSAC team at the moment and am familiar with the ages of the seniors. There are a handful of seniors (maybe 5 or 6) who are 19 already but most are turning 19 this Spring or Summer. No one is 20 years old. Stop being inflammatory just to spin your own narrative.

You lost, move on and stop making excuses. Those same kids will be older in college as well, how will you handle the disappointment there?

Big Games this weekend;
GC vs Manhasset Northport vs Ward Melville Farmingdale vs Massapequa
Who do you like?
I think Manhasset, Northport, Farmingdale are going to be the winners.

Except that basketball doesn't complain, football( a violent contact sport) doesn't complain, but yeah the fringe sport with minimal scholarship money that gets overshadowed on ESPN by NCAA Club Frisbee has a grave problem with this. get a grip.

All toss-ups. Could be decided by a post or two. Will tell a lot about np and wm. Would pay to see any of them.. this is what high school lax is all about.

That's young for college. Have a child who turned 18 Fall of Freshman year. A 19-year-old HS senior is a single-year holdback. It's really not that big a deal. If your son can't play with them now, he's done. Frankly, if you're looking for scholarships lacrosse isn't the best route, hockey and track & field are great if you're not a football or basketball guy.

If you’re looking to get into a great school with maybe a little bit of lacrosse help, like Wesleyan, Williams, Washington & Lee, Union, Middlebury, Swarthmore, Babson, etc. lacrosse is a great way to go… it’s about the next 40, not the next 4.

To each his own, a lot of great schools, personally would much rather see my kids at at Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Hopkins, Duke, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Virginia, Michigan, UNC, Penn State, Maryland etc... and if they are that level of athlete I would have them consider playing club at a great school. Maybe Florida, Arizona State, Boston College, Clemson, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, USC, Stanford etc....

What will be you're excuse when your child get in to college, 18 year old freshman playing against a 24 year old senior ? redshirt, medical redshirt, 5th year senior and so on. If you cant handle it now, you wont ever be able to handle it.

An 18 year old freshman vs a 24 year old senior is NOT the same as a 19 year old HS senior who is 3 months from his 20th birthday playing against 14 & 15 year old true freshman and sophomores.

If all you have to offer in Suffolk is Northport no one in Nassau is worried.

I 100% agree with this statement but who cares, you guys are arguing a point that will never change. Just try and enjoy the ride with your son.

That's what JV is for, if your kid is too small to handle the older kids, he doesn't belong on the big boy roster.

A few questions 1- how bad is your program that you have so many 14 year olds on varsity 2- how bad are those 14 year olds that they are concerned about playing older kids (the good players we know want to play against the best and play with out fear.) 3- what league are you in that your bad program with so many weak Freshman and sophomores on varsity plays programs with 20 year old Seniors? Maybe get off this message board and go talk to your school board and coaches about playing a softer schedule. 4- Do you keep score at and count scrimmages as wins? 5- Are you really projecting how soft you and your son are on a message board. Problems not a problem for anyone other than the parents who want their kid to be better than they actually are. 6- The only real argument is the St Anthony one where they believe they would have beat St Johns if there were no holdbacks (doesnt make much sense though as Sophmores and Juniors were a large part of that Meanywhipping.)
