None. Can’t be 19 at the start of the school year. It’s an MIAA rule. Why is everyone talking about CH? Clearly the team in Glen Burnie will win the Ship. Not this year for the Glen Burnie school. Their best players are still on JV according to the parents I closely follow AA Co lacrosse. I’d have to say that for 2020 Spalding is among the top three public school programs in the county, just behind Broadneck and Severna Park but top three! Still wanting to Blame Spalding for your son and his lack of lacrosse ability and IQ. He just isnt good enough to play JV let alone Varsity. Have you talked to him about Rec Baseball ?

Relocating for work from the Philadelphia area. We have an 8th and 6th grade boys. I'd appreciate any insight on the programs (lacrosse & Football) at South River, Broadneck, and Severna Park if any one has them. Thanks. If your kids like both sports equally, without question Broadneck has the best program. Not even close. If Lacrosse is all they care about, look in SP. South River is about to change drastically with Crofton High opening up next year. They will be terrible - like they were in the 90s.

Severna Park is by far the better lacrosse program, Broadneck would be #2 and SR is a distant 3rd. Broadneck has a good young coaching group that is doing a solid job rebuilding the program but they don't have a very strong pipeline of players coming in so it will always be a challenge for them. Severna Park always has a good flood of talent coming up through the feeder programs. For football Broadneck probably has the best program followed by South River and Severna Park... well they are a lacrosse school.

CH the St. Francis of HS Lacrosse; good luck travel the country to find games in 2 years. Typical MIAA attitude. If you can’t beat them then refuse to play them. lost mentality CH outscored their opponents last year 265 - 99; my guess is they may be looking for more a challenge on the National Level. Seems to make sense to me; time to move them out of the MIAA.

Does the rest of the MIAA start to recruit from outside of Maryland? Does anyone really think BL is reserving their new dorms for strictly international students? All good things come to an end like the MSA of old .. MIAA will evolve in one way or the other in the coming years.

I think the coaches in the MIAA are tired of having the kids stay at their homes........

If your assistant coaches are middle school science teachers you get spotted 5 goals? Calvert's top 10 are no better than Boys Latin, Mcdough, Gilman, St Pauls, Loyola. Their (Calvert's) second 10 are. Their coaches are. Their systems are (apparently). The MIAA league is top notch as are all the teams in it. It looks like Calvert's coaches and systems are better and they have a lot more kids to work with and develop. Their teams from the past few years all played the same- intense and like they wanted to win. Thats not due to talent and size- that is some serious character that must come from the systems and coaches. You see the same thing in college sports.

What? Don’t give us this high character excuse... The 2 CHC players (twins) from Georgia were men among boys and dominated the middle of the field on offense and defense. They were key contributors to 3 championships. Both were elite level players with immense talent and size.

"Calvert's top 10 are no better than Boys Latin, Mcdough, Gilman, St Pauls, Loyola" CH has 4 players from last year's that made the US U19 team. Another made it pretty far in the process. No other MIAA team had more than 1. It's safe to say their starting 10 was better. And their next 10 are better than any other 2nd 10.Great coaching staff and superior talent. I think it may level off a bit after this year. Could be more like Loyola in the 80s when they were in the finals every year but didn't win every year. And they other finalist would change year to year

Also, it depends on how important it is for your child to play in and win State Championships. Broadneck hasn't won one since 1997, where Severna Park (2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) and South River (2009, 2012, 2014) have been considerably more successful in the recent past.

Im not so sure. There are always great players, some big great players too- and they burn out or don't do what they need to remain great. Those two big twins clearly did what they could to be elite and that takes character.

A bunch of glorified rec players playing club now. All the talent is leaving public and heading to private now in SP

Calvert Hall yawn....you guys put all your eggs in 1 basket.....CH basketball....horrible.......CH football c-.......wrestling...horrible......Besides lacrosse what else is CH dominating? Maybe putting everything into your lacrosse program is not the best thing for your school...the so called stellar multiple sport athletes at Calvert Hall that play lacrosse don’t seem to be getting it done in other sports.....CH may need to reconsider putting everything into lacrosse....

Calvert Hall is doing what it takes to win MIAA Championships. The rest are playing catch up. It is a new era that many MIAA teams are being left behind.
Without CH, the MIAA would look like it has the last 10 years. One year BL wins, one year McD, One year St M wins, etc. Maybe a twofer here and there. Not now
CH will keep winning until someone catches up with them. BL boarding is BL saying, we are coming. That its for international students is a joke. McD has boarders and will start using it more in future to get out of state talent. Right now, its limited boarding isnt.

Not as deep as others but could compete with teams other than CH

The program has gone so far as to have out of state players living with alumni head coach yet finds itself in the place you describe?

Calvert Hall is doing what it takes to win MIAA Championships. The rest are playing catch up. It is a new era that many MIAA teams are being left behind. Without CH, the MIAA would look like it has the last 10 years. One year BL wins, one year McD, One year St M wins, etc. Maybe a twofer here and there. Not now CH will keep winning until someone catches up with them. BL boarding is BL saying, we are coming. That its for international students is a joke. McD has boarders and will start using it more in future to get out of state talent. Right now, its limited boarding isnt. Us Lacrosse Magazine has a good article on CH lacrosse in the March and digital issue: https://www.uslaxmagazine.com/high-...rt-hall-set-a-new-standard-of-excellenceThere are good insights into the programs character, leadership, values, and discipline- “The thing we do better than anywhere I’ve seen is our seniors run the show,” Cardinals assistant Joel Tinney says. “Some places, freshmen carry the balls, but not here. Our seniors are the last ones getting the balls, and they’re making sure everyone is in line. Rarely at a Calvert Hall practice do you see a coach get upset or call out a player because a senior is doing it before that.” “It starts with leadership,” said Team USA coach Nick Myers, who has established a similar pipeline of Calvert Hall products to Ohio State, where he’s in his 12th season as the coach. “You have to start with Bryan and what he’s done.” “What stands out about their team has always been their toughness,” says Brodie Merrill, the director of lacrosse at The Hill Academy. “They play a blue collar, ultra aggressive and physical style, not just compared to the MIAA, but all the teams that we play.” Calvert Hall never discusses its past championships. After every practice, Kelly also tells his players that lacrosse is what you do. It’s not who you are. Kelly got involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. At an Athletes in Action meeting, he heard evangelist Billy Graham say a coach can have more of an influence than a parent. “I realized that’s what I wanted to do,” Kelly says. “I want to have an impact on these kids. I look at Calvert Hall coaching as my ministry.” “He cares a lot about lacrosse, and it’s a big part of his life, but he is focused on much more than that,” says Syracuse midfielder Brendan Curry (CHC ’17). “That’s a way he gains trust in us. We know he has our best interests first, even before lacrosse.”

Watched the video of Severna Park vs. Broadneck at the Rivals Challenge. I know that team well and all their top guns were there among the 35+ kid squad they brought to that event. Broadneck was clearly the better team, but Severna Park will still challenge for the state championship if they can get out of their region. They ran through the rest of the teams at the fall event judging by tourney machine.

Have you ever seen one article critical of anyone that carries any weight in US lax mag. It is generally is a slobber-feast . Hard hitting stories they arent. My take is that they are doing a great job at CH making it a winning program. But it sure isnt Mother Teresa leading lacrosse players there. No one stays at the top of anything if you act like a choir boy.

You better get them this year because Catonsville will make a deep run this year and then 2 straight State Championships. 2022 Class is the best in Maryland Public or Private.

It is generally is a slobber-feast I've talked to many parents who have been involved with Kelly and FCA. If you are "his guy" he is great. He will call and check up on the kid, help with medical referrals, etc. But, once he decides you aren't "his guy" he will find someone else and lie about it as needed. He has built an incredible powerhouse at CHC, but the holier than though persona is bull.
