The Brooklyn Lacrosse Club ( www.brooklynlacrosse.org), NYC’s fastest growing lacrosse organization, is looking for a few good coaches for its Summer 2013 Program and beyond. The Brooklyn Lacrosse Club was founded in 2012, and has rocketed to over 225 kids on 9 teams this Spring. Our Summer program, hosted over 7 Sunday in July and August, currently has over 1,000 registrations with 2 months left to sign up. Programs are offered to boys and girls, from Pre-K through 12th grade. The Brooklyn Lacrosse Club is NYC’s only lacrosse organization that counts national Champions (Division 1 and 2), Hall-of-Famers and former Professional players among it ranks. Playing experience is important, but more important is the love for the game and the desire to introduce the sport to the youth of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Lacrosse Club will be hosting 2 Open Houses for prospective coaches: Saturday, May 18th at 4pm at Pier 5 of the Brooklyn Bridge Park.(Field 3) Saturday, June 15th at 3pm at Pier 5 of the Brooklyn Bridge Park.(Field 3) All coaches accepted into our program will be eligible to take The US Lacrosse Coach Training Program as well as CPR/medical training, all paid for by the Brooklyn Lacrosse Club. Our Mission is to bring the sport of Lacrosse to the youth of Brooklyn, emphasizing Fundamentals, Teamwork, Respect and Brooklyn. The essence of our organization is the belief that Lacrosse should be made accessible to all children, despite the various barriers of entry that exist in urban areas; such as cost, perception, and logistics. For more info, please contact Joe Nocella jnocella@brooklynlacrosse.org

Please give a break, keep the urban bull off this site.we are hard working people that ask for nothing. It's called hard work and family values. Did you know that the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation and their newly installed President has made expanding support into the New [lacrosse] City area one of their top missions for the health of lacrosse in this region? Is this "urban bull" as you so anonymously called it or is this expansion into an untapped area of potential players? If you do not want to partake, simply pass over this thread.

What kind of crack is that? Urban bull? This is a portal site for the game of lacrosse, nothing more, nothing less. The post was about an organization in the Brooklyn area, and the expansion of the game, so why shouldn't it be posted on here. Grow up!

Want to you mean by perception? Probably means it's a game usually played by European-Americans

Want to you mean by perception? Consider the following quote from this Washington Post article. "...In October, U.S. Lacrosse, the national governing body for the men’s and women’s game, released a strongly worded statement decrying the current recruiting climate. Stenersen said in a phone interview that the process undermines the youth sport culture and also threatens its rapid growth. He worries that raising the stakes in the club system could deny opportunities to “expand entry to the game beyond the stereotypical rich, white child.”

I come from a family of six born and raised in Brooklyn. Newirk and Flatbush, take a ride by that place.I was very good in all 3 major sports but had to quit and get a job to help out the family.worked two jobs in college, two jobs to pay for my wedding, three jobs to get a down payment for my house on long Island.I have four kids and a stay home wife, one kid going to college next year.My kids are very good in lacrosse but I am the Urban guy I can't afford it. What do I do have them quit like I did give up there dream of playing college D1.No I ask for no help go out and get a side job and work my [lacrosse] off.Yes I am sick and tired of hearing about people that do nothing to help them selves and their families. But they still think they deserve something. Like the great Mike Moran said after 9/11 kiss my irish bleep.

I also worked my way through my undergraduate and post graduate programs. My advice is to move to a place where grass grows.

I have NEVER been called progressive, or forward thinking, but are you people actually saying that inner city black kids should be kept out of lacrosse so that suburban white kids can remain dominant and have the scholarship money to themselves?...WOW!!! Thanks you guys make me feel really good about myself.

The reality is once the game is exposed to inner city kids with quality coaching in a matter of 5 years many of the scholarship offers will start to get spread out to all ethnic backgrounds . That is what all of you are scared of

Why is there so much fuss about race? Let the kids who like the sport excel at the sport regardless of ethnicity. Where is the outrage from the Washington Post about the NBA or NFL??? These sports teams are overwhelmingly dominated by one race. Not one journalist has an issue with that.

Like the great Mike Moran said after 9/11 kiss my irish bleep. Wow! This coming from a Brooklynite! So freakin' hilarious. Like you; I grew up in Brooklyn, Belmont and Christopher in Brownsville. And yes; I'm that "urban" person that you speak of. I'm not going to run down my pedigree; but I started in city housing and now am a homeowner like yourself. My daughter in 7th grade asked me about lacrosse and I had my doubts. But she pressed on and I gave in. Long story short; she went from a raw talent to a Division 1 player. And there are many like yourself who have issue with that. I never saw them at the tournaments, clinics, junior days and unofficial visits. I understood the work that had to be done to get my daughter to achieve her goal. They have this level of entitlement; and how dare s girl like my daughter gets scholarship offers and my club playing daughter doesn't. Simply pathetic. I applaud jerks like you; as you and your wives give me, my wife and daughters dirty looks. But then have the audacity to give backhanded compliments when you see that my daughter has some game in her. The folks in MD don't think too highly of LI lacrosse and it's archaic views. There are "urban" schools in Baltimore who would whoop the skin off a few teams here on the island. Sorry dude; as much as you would like things to remain the same, things(and lacrosse) are changing. The Washington Post was on target with it's editorial( at least I think.)

Okay...80% of the NBA is black..... And 68% of the NFL is Black too..... But???? What is the percentage of Black ownership in both leagues? <1% in both. So...what is your beef? You have complaints about high paid employees....most of whom will be either dead or broke prior to age 50....possibly dying broke as well. That is why the Washington Post has no outcry. I know this may not have a place here(my apologies Sage) but....most minorities do not seek a handout. I don't and never did or will. Many of us just want to live life as you do; carefree and no worries of "is today the day that I get pulled over and the stuff hits the fan?" Or my wife can go into Macy's and not be tailed by loss prevention and have 10 sales associates ruin her day by asking for help. Fine....I get it....just be honest about who you are and when called on your subtle bigotry; own up to it.

To infer that somehow members of one race are keeping members of another from owning a team is pure racism! There are plenty of uber rich non-white people in this country that can afford to own a team. Name one minority that has been prevented from buying an NLF or NBA team? You can't. Further, I for one am all for a free market. I hope athletes get as much money for their work as they can. If they squander that money and end up broke, that's a personal responsibilty issue. You see in business, there is only one color, its green. Unfortunately, for racists and race baters like you, it's all about the color of ones skin.

The Washington Times rightly ignored it for the disgusting inferences it contains. Further, if your an amazing lax player, of any race, the D1 coaches will find you. That's their job!! Look up Zed Williams in NYS. Broke Mikey Powells NYS scoring record as a jr. To the best of my knowledge he didn't play for any high priced club. He will most likely start at UVA as a freshman. BTW, neither did the Bratton twins.

Maybe everyone should stop worrying about themselves and little johnnies " full ride" which those who actually read something other than this board know is practically a fable. Studies have shown that team sports with supportive coaches and parents improve grades, lower drug and alcohol use etc. the idea that our great game will exposed to more athletes regardless of color and economic background is exciting to me only because I know that sports for the most part are a positive influence on young people's lives. If lax in the city improves a child's life than I am all for it regardless of its effect on my current 8th grade sons chances to get a look. Take it from someone going thru college prep etc with his current 11th grader, we are all better off spending our $ on tutors and sat prep because the money schools give away to academically elite students blows away whatever $ any of us will get from a 1/4 d1 athletic scholarship. Signed white guy from LI who lives in a lax twn.

The Washington Post picked up on it because it is in line with their agenda of division and victimization. Any quote that they can find that fits with this agenda is reported as news. Point is, you should have known who uttered the quote before you hopped up on your soapbox. Takes 2 extra minutes and you might not end-up looking like a fool. No, point is what was said and what paper reported it. Clearly, you concur with both the quote and the paper. Not surprising.

He worries that raising the stakes in the club system could deny opportunities to “expand entry to the game beyond the stereotypical rich, white child.” The Washington Post is a liberal, socialist, rag... Why is there so much fuss about race? Let the kids who like the sport excel at the sport regardless of ethnicity. Where is the outrage from the Washington Post about the NBA or NFL??? These sports teams are overwhelmingly dominated by one race. Not one journalist has an issue with that. That domination that you speak of is in relation to players. Why are facts subtle bigotry? You Sir, are the bigot. Moving of the goal posts is what I see. Reggie Fowler was prevented from being the majority owner of the Minnesota Vikings. If having an opinion against the racial practices that were common in the history the nation....makes me a bigot....so be it. Everyone's a victim.... Try moving forward for once. You just proved my point. You look at everything and anything through the prism of race. In your world, when something, anything, doesnt go a non-white persons way, it's racism or a racist work. Amazing.

I posted in an anonymous fashion; and yet you know how I always think. Okay; since you posses such clairvoyance; what are the powerball numbers for this week?
Seriously; someone asked when was a non-white person prevented from being a majority owner from a major professional sports franchise; and was told that I couldn't name it. I did.
So.....what would be a better view that I should have....just asking.
I know this is a lax forum...but....why is race such a sensitive issue? Why is everyone(on both sides) afraid of dialogue?

I know this is a lax forum...but....why is race such a sensitive issue? Why is everyone(on both sides) afraid of dialogue? The problem is that this thread has wandered far away from the original topic regarding Brooklyn Lacrosse. We have let the argument stray for a couple of key reasons. First, lacrosse will be expanding into the New [lacrosse] City area over the coming couple of years. If you check out the Brooklyn Lacrosse web site, you will see that they have a well-defined, age-by-age curriculum, training schedule, and games arranged. BOTC wants the community to see how this program is trying to grow. Second, the race issue came up on the Main Message board not because it was raised by a reader, but rather the fact that the CEO of US Lacrosse - your National Organization - raised the issue related to recruiting access.

The game is really growing in the city; as I had witnessed many teenage boys walking around cradling a ball. Just hope it has the same impact on the young ladies as well.

Archbishop Molloy has a girl's lax program now (year 2) ... joining St. Francis Prep and Mary Louis as three Catholic HS girl's programs in Queens. More to follow I'm sure. Since basketball and baseball are still king, the NYC boys haven't started playing. But when they do, they should be a force. For example, St. Francis Prep has 700+ students PER GRADE. What kind of program do you think they will have when they can pick from 1400 boys?
