It will certainly determine who is better out of those two teams. Not sure what else it will show. Ward Melville already lost to Sayville and Northport aint losing to them this year!

Think there was a typo and you meant 7 goals. Hard to believe that St Anthonys lost. Also from reading that they were up, controlled the draws, and still lost?

Regarding Vero Beach and their four losses thus far this season, take a look at the competition level and the scores of those games.

1. McDonogh, Maryland : Lost 12-6
2. Milton, Georgia : Lost 14-13
3. Conestoga, Pennsylvania : Lost 11-9 in Overtime
4. Georgetown Visitation, DC : Lost 19-18

This roster looks like a team that has been all over the east coast playing or hosting solid competition.

Prior to St Anthonys losing, I do not think Vero Beach did anything. The games that lost are not a statement of accomplishment. Losing by 6 in McDonogh's first game and the rest of the teams are typically not top teams.

I thought St. Anthonys had too much talent to lose to a Vero Beach. No idea what went wrong.

Certainly, you can't tell anything about a team unless you know who they played to get both wins and losses. A 20 -0 record and worth a thing if your not playing stiff competition and it goes the other way too.

That makes sense. St Anthonys lost to Vero Beach and win you look at who they played, there are a lot of questions. Vero Beach kills a bunch of weak teams. Loses to Milton who is decent, loses to Conestoga who is not good, and gets beaten up by McDonogh.

In fairness, to use the same logic with St Anthonys it is too early to judge them. They do not play anyone in their league but they do play manhasset, garden city, and SSA. St Anthonys might have fell apart against Vero, but they will rebound as they are better than that. They also have an advantage, when you only have to way about 3 games the entire year it makes it easy to rest kids, work on things, and focus in on the important games.

I agree with the prior poster. Maybe Conestoga is great this year, they have not been in the past. Last year they had 9 losses and played one top team who easily handled them. Things can definitely change year to year. Unfortunately, Conestoga does not play a top team this year to really judge that improvement. I saw Vero Beach play this year and last year. Without question they were a lot better last year, so were we. It was our first game. We are getting better every week. I can tell you that the Vero parents did not think they were going to beat St Anthonys. They thought that they could beat Milton and Conestoga, but did not think it would be easy as they lost a lot from last year.

Is Darien that good? Or did GC have an off day. Would have expected GC to win by a few. Heard Darien was up almost the entire game.

I'm sure Vero's parents thought they would beat Conestoga and Milton based on last year and pre season but the team is a year older and loaded with top D1 players... That was Conestoga's first game of the year as well. As far as other National competition the team will play Radnor #19 in US right now who just lost 10-9 to Georgetown Visitation yesterday and at the end of the Stoga season they will play Moorestown NJ...Last years #2 team and currently #5 or #6 in the US

Im just curious. In football; there is a division for developing teams. Why isn't the same being done in lacrosse? I truly feel for the situation at Copaigue. And it appears that nothing is being done as teams seem to taste blood with the mention of Copaigue.

It is done in Nassau County for Girls Lax. 4 Divisions based on strengh of the program and not school size. Look at the scores from Nassau and you will see competitive games throughout.

If the high school coaches in Suffolk had any class they would not pile on Cop. and let the younger kids play. It serves no purpose to shut a high school team out when these kids are trying to learn how to play and don't have the youth program that other towns have or the propensity to play travel ball. it kills me to see scores of 17-0
Go play Northport, Bay Shore and Ward Melville before you pound your chest in victory.

But they refuse to do that in Suffolk. My daughters team plays Copaigue this week. And they are saying: "let's score 30 on them." The coach also told the team: " this is the game that your families should attend." Seriously???? How about against Hauppauge or one of the better teams in the league? Copaigue may lack talent; but heart and desire are indeed present. It is indeed a shame when a coach will condone such unsportsmanlike behavior.

Well said! At least the above mentioned teams won't play against the lower echelon of the league.

We all know that the better way is to build competitive Varsity League brackets based on the previous season with any huge exceptions noted by the High School Coaches.

Some readers might say that this would encourage a Varsity coach to sandbag a season - to "play down" in a lower bracket.

This is where the Nassau (Section VIII) ability based system is a huge step forward. Not only are the league games competitively balanced, but fewer playoff spots are available as you move down the division tables. If the Varsity coach's goal is playoff success, which it should be, a higher league bracket will increase the chances for a playoff berth.

Rather than forcing a .500 record or better for a playoff berth, you could play in a tougher division and still get several playoff victories against lower ranking teams.

BOTC normally just allows the games to play out and we report the results, but the Copiague program is worthy of commentary. So far this season, the results this season stand thus : 18-0, 18-0, 17-2, 17-0, and 17-0. If you follow these scores back into 2012, you will see similar results. Walking into any of these matches, a team knows that Copiague will struggle to score before taking the field. Clearly, what we need to do as a lacrosse community is help Copiague raise their game.

Despite this fairly obvious call, some Varsity programs will just pound the scores as evidenced above. What is the goal? To have Copiague drop the girls program? To put those players into some type of afternoon limbo? Have them miss out on another activity that might add to a college application? Look, these are not going to be Division I lacrosse players, but these might be contributors to a college campus in many other ways.

The Suffolk County lacrosse community should be thinking of ways to help the Copiague program. Since these games are over by halftime according to the scoreboard, how about the other Suffolk County Varsity programs running training drills along with Copiague players to help them elevate their game?

There are some purists that will say "Hey, this is Varsity and it is time to put the diapers away". BOTC understands that perspective.

However, if you want to teach sportsmanship ... if you want your sophomores and juniors to have a college essay topic that truly means something to a community ... if you want to teach what leadership truly means ... now is the time to do something different.

Our question : Which coach will take the challenge? Which Varsity Team Captain will encourage their team to skip the stats padding and help another team?

It won't happen tomorrow; as blood is being smelled. Look at the unmentioned team's last three games. And yet they want to put up 30 on them.

There is a union teacher/ie.Athletic Director who should have to answer the reason why the team is not progressing!!!! Probably since the AD is tenured, and in no way is his performance threatened he either doesn't care or isn't up to the job !!!! The union/school district will protect his job at the expense of the kids trying to learn the game.

That's the problem. I believed that athletics is supposed to be an extension of the classroom. Maybe true lacrosse coaches should coach; not some tenured teacher who was on the third line of JV!

Most of the girls on Copaigue's team are picking up a stick for the first time. It's hard for them to catch up with teams whose girls have been playing since 2nd grade. And yes; the union will protect the job of the coach.

How do you know? Who says that any team wants to humiliate anyone else? Are you parents at practice to hear such nonsense. I doubt it? Would any of you also stop the bench players that never get in from scoring a goal when they finally get a chance?

If I were coach and if the score were as lopsided as Sage stated; the scoring would be done with. Simple as that. No need to humiliate an opponent.

Teenage girls cannot keep anything to themselves. Any respectable coach would not allow his/her team to embarrass an opponent. As karma will eventually occur.

Some of these coaches are friends off of the field. And if one of my friends got embarrassed by a team that my team could embarrass; guess what the outcome would be?

I am a parent of a copiague varsity player and I apreciate the support as it has been a rough year. The copiague girls do not stop when they are down they wasnt to play. A few comments the program is in jeopardy with the school district but why do the boys teams have multiple coaches at the middle school and high school level but the girls get one coach. Copiague also does not have a youth league lacrosse program for the girls (it has been attempted).
As for the 30-0 desire by some teams, it starts with the parents. We recently played riverhead and lost 20-0 the last 5 minutes of the game a parent in the stands was yelling to the girls they should have 25 on the board.

I will posit that stopping the scoring is just as humiliating. Everyone knows what's going on and it becomes a long and boring game of keep-away. An idea I like better is for the winning team to play with their non-dominant hand, switch up the offense and defense so they get a feel for the other position, and clear the bench. Any combination of those things.
