Don’t know the numbers but can think of 2 studs .... Kavanagh did a pg before NotreDame and Gutterding did a pg before Duke..
Obvious quality recruits.

Gutterding was a early hold back and did a PG year. 23 year old senior...the GC way

you sure about your take on that?

Yes, both excellent players but gain an edge physically playing as seniors at age 22-23. This has been going on for decades not a new phenomenon also not against any rules .

Let's be real... the advantage is not gained at 22 physically - it's more academic maturity.
Probably not a huge physical difference between your 19yr old self and your 22yr old self.

Rather the really significant PHYSICAL advantage goes the the 15 yr old holdback playing against 13-14 year olds. Its more likely that the hold back has the advantage of puberty on his side while many 13-14 yr olds might be just starting to hit puberty.

an "on age" kid Born Feb. 3, 1995 would graduate HS at 18 and college at 22 - if he red shirts or pg's he would graduate at 23. so he PG'd out of HS but was not an early hold back

You sure there isn't a big difference between 19 and 22 year old. Google Giannis Antetokounmpo or "Greek Freak" and then take a look at some pictures when he was recruited at 18 years old vs. now when he is 23 years old. I know this is the NBA but you don't get too many before/after pictures of lacrosse players.

I have to disagree with that. A 18 year old College freshman has a huge disadvantage in experience, and physical maturity over a 21 year old freshman.

Huge difference between between freshman & senior. PG is a huge help. Make (Trained Athletes) hit their peak around 28 years of age.
Kindergarten hold back, 8th grade reclass, PG, redshirt... All give the player an advantage on the field, in the classroom and socially as well. None of this is new.

ok to disagree...but I did not say experience nor did I say 18 - I said 19yr.

maybe I should have been more clear .... Probably not a huge physical difference between college soph and a college Junior/senior.

experience is another topic.

Does Rob Pannell or guys like Gutterding give advice on this. Again, Lacrosse isnt a pro sport but it is a gateway to a better college. If being a an older player means better player. So be it, it is a means to a better future.

Most kids that do a PG year after HS are already committed to a college and they are PG'ing either to mature physically for another year or maybe to get their grades up to get into the school, Pannell had signed his NLI so he decided to PG and switch commitments. When going through the recruiting process a lot of colleges will ask the recruit if he would consider PG'ing a year. similar to Army and Navy sending so many kids to prep. I know of a few kids that were told "our 2017 class is full at your position but if you PG we will commit to you in our 2019 class"

Do you pay for NAPS/MAPS? Do you still get appointed to the prep school?

You do not pay for the academy prep schools. The coaches do not have too much room to wiggle on which recruits go prep and which recruits go directly to the academy. Where the player falls academically (GPA, SAT, ACT) will determine which route the player goes. A player with 95 average and 1250 SAT is not going to prep. The Coaches would like every player to do a prep year.

Please lets not equate MAPS/NAPS with a PG year. MAPS/NAPS have a whole military piece to their schedule, including their summer, that a PG kid going to IMG etc does not have to do. IMG etc you pay your $60K and go to make believe school. MAPS/NAPS prepares them for the academies for USMA and USNA.

Undersized now or will always be undersized? If the objective is to play in college (not saying scholarship) then don't lose sleep on him being undersized for another couple years. With the new rule, you have plenty of time starting in 9th grade and, more realistically, 10th grade to get him exposed to college coaches. For the time being have him do what he is doing. As the previous poster stated, it doesn't hurt to have him play other sports if he is not already. College coaches like that. Most important since the kids in 7th grade. tell him good grades are as important as good lacrosse.

Well said. Multiple sports, good grades, and hit the lax wall. There are plenty of smaller guys playing D1. Speed is just as important as size in Lax.

Another good game today, St. Anthony's vs Yorktown:
Yorktown isn't as good as years past, and this might be the last year they have a decent team. John Jay is the Sect 1 team this year. If St. Anthony's doesn't win by 10 I'd be surprised. Don't read into the win if it isn't by 10 or more. John J didn't read into the win over Smithtown East and has moved on.

Locust Valley goalie kept them in the game. LV goalie is real deal. Refs stunk. LV is a young team and will rebuild.

Speed, athleticism, IQ , skill, strength, attitude, motor etc.. all much more important than size. Not sure about the "early recruiting geniuses" but I know a few of the old school guys ask their assistants one question before they make an offer "Can he play?" Bottom line, they take all sizes if "they can play".

Good luck to your son. Work on strength which will improve speed. Develop skill and IQ. Hit the wall and shoot. Watch college games. Find a good strength coach or training facility that understands how to work with athletes not bodybuilders. When watching games have him watch the players that do not have the ball and the defenders who are not playing the ball.
