Does anyone know the history of why Section VIII and XI must play each other to advance to the state tournament? It seems grossly unfair to limit our sections from only advancing one team each year when it could be argued that in some years, they both might be the best two teams in the state, and in others, they both may have been better than many other teams that advanced.

I would say that it has everything to do with travel and time away from school. With finals, AP ect. imagine if they seeded the tournament and you were a team from western NY and you played Suffolk in the first round went home and had to come back three days later to play Nassau and go home and come back and play a State Championship at Hofstra all while finals and testing were going on.

The rest of NYS has to deal with all of the issues you've raised - NYS is fairly large state.

Really - you want to compare Orchard Park to Pittsfield and Orchard Park to Ward Melville? you are talking the difference between missing two days of school, taking a coach bus and staying overnight in a hotel vs. leaving school a little early and taking a school bus. not to mention the families and friends not being able to go to the games or making huge sacrifices to go. And imagine the reaction when your school district says you might need to layout $150 - $200 for your kid to play in a quarter final game.

The make pairings in D1 opening games based on travel distances I think doing it in HS makes total sense.

Logistics aside, it totally takes away the opportunity for legitimate teams to vie for a state championship . . .

Then they should have won when they had the chance. Most disappointing teams in recent memory. That is why they play the games.

They may not have won a state title, but they certainly had a few years getting the greatest number of boys into high-level programs (Academic and Athletic), with big-time scholarships....which in the long run would be far more important. Three straight years with #1players in the County. Not too shabby!

Doesn't matter the order, you have win them all to get the ring. Would it feel better to lose the game in the Championship of the State tournament as opposed to the first round?? I don't think so. Every year that Cold Spring Harbor has won the Nassau County Championship they have either gone on to win the State tournament or lost to the eventual champion along the way (out of Suffolk). Every year. No complaints. If you can win the island, you have no business playing for the State championship.

The order of games does matter. Look at Section 1, they have a cake walk every year deep into the playoffs while we have knock down, drag out brawls every game. It has an impact without a doubt.

You win your county, the next goal is the State. No one cares about the games in between for--they are part of the road.
