I am a big believer in the old adage that the best coaches get off the bus with the best players.....players win games and coaches lose games is a bunch of B.S.
Tom Coughlin was a great coach when he had talent and fired when he did not.
IMHO the coaching at the PAL level is more important then at the HS level. have a great feeder program and have a great HS program, that is how they did it in WI and SWR and how they constantly do it at CSH, GC, Mann and CSH.
I also don't believe the coaching in travel is that much better if at all then at the HS level. A lot of the travel coaches are HS coaches, they might be able to do more strategy coaching but they have hand picked teams. They can build team offense and team defense because they do not worry about skills or the weaker players where as at most HS you are still working on skills almost all the way through (except at the programs with good feeder programs).
Having said all that I will say that the one team that constantly gets the most out of their outstanding players is WM - really good game day coaches. Except the two years they lost to Smithtown East.

Syosset?
The Syosset Coaching staff is very weak. Just look back to the 2015 Season.... Blew the doors off of Pequa and SE and then stumbled vs an average Nisky Team. That's a pure coaching failure. No proper mental preparation for the game, No adjustments made for the second half. Coaching staff failed. Syosset has never won a state championship despite having many, many talented players through the years.
Similar story in 2016.... Syo got beat by a disciplined and well coached WM Team.
Can go back further but is it really necessary? Easy to see the pattern.
Syosset lacrosse will never win a championship with the current coaching staff.
So the coaching was good enough to beat Pequa/WM maybe its the players, maybe they were hung over? Who, the coaches? Yes, maybe they were hung over... If the players were hung over this again is a coaching failure. CSH went up to Middletown the night before to get in the "zone", and took care of business. Syo coaching staff should have brought the team up the night before and made sure the players were well rested and not hung over.... So yes, it was a coaching failure.

Now this is 100% pure craziness. Coaching failure? Spoken like a typical disgruntled mommy/daddy. I think the quote is "you can't want it more then the players" (pick your famous coach for the author)
Question: If a CSH kid got caught doing something wrong the night before the game do you blame the coaching staff?

Let's face it. nobody on this site will ever say a positive word about Syosset. Move on people. it's getting old. Coach took over in 2001. Look at the record before 2001 and since 2001 and get back to me.

Today parents want to blame everyone else for their child's behavior. Its an absolute joke. Monkey see monkey do, parents. If your smoking the wacky tabacky, if your nipping the bottle every night at the table, what do you think junior will do? Nooo its the coaches fault!! B.S. If you dont look in their wallet for the fake ID and they get in trouble for buying liquor, its not the coaches fault its yours. If parents know the kids vaping and then they get caught vaping at school its your fault not the coaches. Its called parenting. Your children are not your friends. Which is something many parents dont get today. Its always someone else's fault. No parents its yours.

A varsity coach will enter the players lives around age 15 or 16 years old, they spend 2-3 hours a day with them six days a week from the beginning of March until the end of May and they have 30 to 40 kids to worry about (not just yours). For the $8,000 - $12,000 they get paid they will be responsible for school work, school discipline problems, teaching and advising them on the recruiting process, talk to college coaches on their behalf, getting calls from other teachers about the kids, dealing with parents, (and in many years they have to deal with family tragedy) and they actually coach lacrosse. This same coach may also coach 1 or 2 other sports as well as trying to raise their own families......and every anonymous poster on here think they all suck.... Here is a Thank You to all the coaches and assistant coaches that have to deal with us and for the most part do a damn good job.

The choice to teach is up to the individual. I am sure a lot of thought went into your career path decision. The choice to be in academia is not an easy one especially in this day and age. As for getting paid to coach, what should they do it for free? What type of work are you in? I am sure you dont work for free. The hours spent coaching can be long and tedious. They are away from their families and the good coaches put in a lot more hours than what is expected.

thanks for weighing in. you can easily see 8-10 scholarship players on the team. and more will play in college. that's the same as every year, isn't it?
No, really, thank you for pointing that out. Yes, that is a typical number each year. And your non answer - also speaks volumes. So, don't you think think that's exactly the reason this questIon was asked? Not that many have committed yet, so why not? Has the coach or AD tried to slow down the process? Now, if you have any useful contribution, it would be greatly appreciated. Following up- 2 recent commits from GC 1 2019 to Brown 1 2018 to Utah So, maybe it was just early to ask the question . Flood gates are opening for GC..... Another 2019 to Cornell

I think a good number of them do a solid job. Every parent is like a Yankee fan. They expect to win every year and it just doesn't work like that. (No offense to the Yankee fans). So if they don't win Suffolk, or Long Island or the state, it is of course the coaches fault. Now do not get me wrong. They do get paid for it and everyone deserves to get paid. But like I said, some are much more deserving than others. And not everyone covers all the responsibilities that you covered in your post. For example, there is one coach, a long standing coach in Suffolk County on the North Shore who is notorious for doing the bare minimum for his players. And this is a top 10 program that has sent players to college, a number at the D1 top 10 level and if you ask the players or the parents, this coach had absolutely nothing to do with getting them there. It was either the travel coaches or the parents that did all the work. So the point is not all coaches are made the same and some care a [lacrosse] of a lot more about their kids than others. A varsity coach will enter the players lives around age 15 or 16 years old, they spend 2-3 hours a day with them six days a week from the beginning of March until the end of May and they have 30 to 40 kids to worry about (not just yours). true that - like in any occupation some are better than others, same as with teachers and administrators, the original post was not trying to canonize HS coaches it was about saying they (most) do a lot and to hold them responsible for teenage boys social shortcomings is silly. But your point is valid, many go above and beyond and some come up short.

Ha..was waiting for that response from one of our LI teachers.......academia...most are HS GYM teachers.....get over yourself. HS teachers work half a day for half a year. Please tell me, with your extensive academic knowledge what job is there other than a LI teacher that works half a day/half a year and is paid as a full time employee. Nobody stated that they should coach for free but to try and sell the long/tedious hours thing is silly. Away from family coaching???? cmon...then don't coach.

Whoever lives in the town and wants to play we coach. With all of the other bs that you non-parenting parents allow your kids to do (heroin for example) I don't mind being the person motivating your kid to do something positive with their lives. For the record, 1 team in each conference finishes their season with a win....someone has to lose. But losing in lacrosse is a lot better than losing in life.

You play the hand you are delt. Some years it's feast others it's famine. As a high school coach you can't pick and choose your players or the parents. There is so much more to deal with as a coach especially on Long Island when it comes to lacrosse. There are so many sideline critics and Monday morning quterbacks it's insane. Not all towns are created equal when it comes to lacrosse talent and the talent pool does change. It may not change that drastically in some towns but they all have up and down years.

We all could have become teachers but chose other paths, be thankful if they are good and your kids learn from them. Kind of sad. You should just keep your kid out of competitive sports. You're a cancer!

So, minute 3 wks (15 days) and the 10 paid holidays. You're not too smart, are you??

Geez....wake up will ya.

If you wanted to work 180 days a year, 7 hours a day, on a full time salary, you should have become a teacher! I make more money than my Lawyer bother, and CPA sister. We live comfortably, and can even afford travel lacrosse for all our kids. Being my spouse is also a teacher we will have a combined pension of 200k at 55. I also get to spend time with my kids. It's a win win! Don't shoot the messenger! Best job out there, if you like kids!

When I was 22, I laughed at anybody that was thinking about teaching as a career
When I was 32 I was making twice as much money as a teacher and laughing at them
When I was 42 I was making 4 times what a teacher was making but working 80 hours a week and missing my kids growing up
When I was 52 I was making about the same as teacher half my age, but I was still working twice as hard
I am 62 and wish I had gone into teaching, I am making less money than when I was 32, I am no where near retiring and i will probably die at my desk.
nice pay, nice benefits, holidays, vacations and summers off with your kids - congrats on a good career choice.

Finally jacka$$- you got it...180 days of work for full years pay. Avg amount of work days/month (10 month school year)-18. And since you probably a HS PE teacher 4 hours work/day. See ya. Have a great day teaching duck-duck-goose

I'm 57 and have basically the exact same story, except my income hasn't gone down (yet). And I agree with you 100%. My advice... don't chase the money dream. It's not what is important. Family and your kids are what is important. Their childhood years are over before you know it and once they are gone, they are gone forever.
