Competition for roster spots is fierce with Division I schools receiving commitments from athletes before they are juniors. Players who opt to take their time when making a college decision discover that there are more opportunities to play Division II or III lacrosse. The biggest difference between D-I and the others is there are no athletic scholarships available at D-III programs, but there are more opportunities.
In Division III, the number of schools offering lacrosse has grown from 70 in 1981 to 138 during the 2006-2007 season. Division II has increased from 18 to 32 teams in that same time. Division I added six teams in that time span. At an estimated 35 players per team, the chances for a high school athlete to play D-II or III is significantly increased. [Source : ESPN Rise]
