the best solution would be to have Lloyd Dobler be in charge - he doesn't want to coach anyone, evaluate anything, or do any lacrosse anything as a career. he doesn't want to coach anybody or play with anybody sold, bought, or processed, or pick a team from anybody that was sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, He doesn't want to do that.

But are there really any Lloyd's around anymore? no club affiliations, no high school affiliations, no kids trying out, you know, the "unbiased" evaluater needed at all tryouts my kid gets cut from

Total joke. They always have way to many kids show up even though they claim there is a cap and a limit. My son did it one year and he is a goalie and he had 5 other goalies on his scrimmage team. They were jumping in and out every few minutes. What the [lacrosse] does that do for any of them to b e evaluated and seen.

that would be a good first step but you will still have some potential conflicts of interest - a coach lives in one county and coaches in another would still "know" kids he is evaluating and you will still have a lot of club affiliations that cross over the counties boarders - but this would be a great first step

What if the Suffolk coach picks bad players in an obvious attempt at winning the game? Have Westchester coaches do the picking.

Pay to bring in coaches from outside the area that know none of the kids. Done

In the grand scheme of things this game is about putting the best players of Suffolk vs the best players of Nassau (committed or not committed) If you tryout and are the best a certain position you make the team. Yet this is no where near that. Its about who's coach is coaching and what kids they know or what team affiliation they have. It might be sold as a tryout but there are kids selected to this event over others that are no where near as talented. It happens at all the age groups. There are those who will come on here and say maybe kid had a bad tryout or the other kid had the day of their life at a tryout. It happens but its impossible for it to happen as frequent as suggested by the players selected year in and year out. Its blatantly obvious that there are favors being done and its not about the best kids making the team.

Yes there are the scenarios of kids who were at the states and given the pass to next round and thats fine. They deserve that courtesy and as long as they are evaluated just like everyone else in the next round its all good. I think people have issue with coaches picking players solely based on team affiliation and not actual talent. Dont get me wrong the level of lacrosse will be good because we are on Long island there are also those players that make the team because its almost impossible not to pick them they are that good. These tryouts are a farce. The kids know and see what is going on but to those who do make it its is a great honor but there are those who are selected just on helmet and not talent. Lets try and bring in some real unbiased elevators to do the job and see how the teams play out next year. It wont happen but at least we can dream a bit.

Who will pay for the evaluators? Will this become a $500 event? Then it will be no more, how many kids will be priced out? Unfortunately this is not practical.

this crosses over to travel lacrosse and showcases. I know for a fact that certain kids have been selected to the all star games at showcases because college coaches go to the directors and tell them they want to see specific kids in the all star game. Last week we had it happen to our team where 3 kids were selected and maybe 1 deserved to be there and the rest didn't play well in the first 2 games before the all star game.

Its tough when you have no control and have to play nice or you become an outcast and a problem to teams who are working closely with college coaches

The coaches know who the top players are. The tryouts don't mean much towards making the team. Helps to have your varsity coach advocating for you when they sit down to pick the team over a few beers. That being said, there are a lot of college coaches at the first round and a kid who is an unknown and makes a really good showing can get some interest from schools.

At the NLF event this weekend I noticed something. Why do most other programs from outsise of Long Island do well at the older levels. Our teams who historically have been dominate seem to always fall off as they get into 10th and 11th. There is one team ninety 1 that did extremely well for years and only won 1 game. They had their players there from what I could tell. Do Long Island players just stop playing together once they are committed. Most other programs continue to play together and do well.

i think you have a variety of reasons - many out of town schools are over while long island kids have finals and more important playoff games going on, maybe little to know practices so far. Also LI kids in a lot of cases have options to play summer ball with their HS team and once committed, why pay all this money to go to recruiting events you no longer need.

The out of town teams are loaded with commits and it was not just at NLF it happens at a lot of tournaments. With the expressive team and the nine t one team. All these other teams beating them when at one time they barely lost. These teams cost the same and parents spend the same. It also happens at many other events. LI Teams do great for 9th grade and then start to fall apart in 10th and 11th

Many commits on the LI teams do not play travel anymore. Particularly if they've committed in 9th or 10th grade. They play with their HS teams. They'll do 2 or 3 local tourns and that's it. I suspect with the new recruiting rules that will move things up quite a bit. As the earliest anyone will be able to commit is September of Jr year, the LI teams will stay together at least until summer between 10th and 11th. Most likely through the next summer as well, as the recruiting process is now elongated. Surely, many schools will not finish their recruiting classes until the following summer, requiring another year of travel. Guess who made out in this deal?

Its very simple, the older LI teams don't practice, my sons team was a perfect example, they won a lot at the younger levels, then around HS it gets very busy for these boys, finals, working, etc. and the team barely practices. Last year Leading Edge crushed it, they won everything, we played them several times, lost some close games, at the NLF we were missing several boys who were still playing in the state championships, lost in OT to them, talking to several of the Edge parents they said they practice 2 times every week, Its that simple, practice makes perfect.

Also forgetting one other major issue called burnout
Kids start travel and year round lax way to early
Our hs program starts in September and the clubs try to get our money year round. Once the kids get a little independence in hs most lose interest.

you lose your two best players by far, 23 and 3, weren't for them, we would have beat you by 5 or 6, nevermind they do everything for your team, offensively and defensively, cant wait to smack your asses around next year. That is what you call fun!!!

Scam because some of the better players were not selected or because certain players already knew that they would play in the nassau/suffolk game. who really cares, if you select a player who is already committed to play this game, what will the college coaches attending have to look at. This is a recruiting event after all. This event will come into play more for the coming years since the change in NCAA rules.

As the season progresses, many of the parents get fed up with their child standing around and opt to leave. Figure if 5-7 players opt to leave, the club already has their money and now the team is at the roster size of the rest. These clubs aren't stupid, there is a reason when traveling, they fly first class while you sit in the cheap seats.

Until a SA signs a NLI, a commitment is just a non-binding promise for both sides. While they are honored way more than not, as a SA, I don't think it should be considered the "end all" for younger commits. With the rule change, that obviously won't be an issue going forward.

EI post saying they are 9,10,11 graders this year and next year they will rock with all D! players, without 23 and 3, they are nothing, we(SWR) would have beat them by 5 or 6 goals, very overrated, as I am sure several other teams would have beat them too without those two guys who did everything for them...

Will 23 and 3 be back next year for Ei? I know they have some really talented young guys there, and if 23 and 3 was one of them I dont understand your point. If 23 and 3 werent then you dont know EI as well as you think. And not sure why SWR is spoutting off. I think Islip also has a good shot at SWR next year along with ESM and Comsewogue. and why pickon Ei they are not in SWr conference.

this is confusing

SWR loses their 2 best I have no idea why this [lacrosse] is picking on EI
Their Defense and Goalie are back as well as top Attack

SWR loses their whole team with those two players

and they are in B not C Division go pick on Islip who return everybody and will spank SWR

Why does every event have to be about recruiting? These kids should want to play in this game for pride and competition. They need to understand why sports are great! all these showcases, recruiting tournaments etc.. where the kids main goal is to impress a coach, really takes away from why they should be playing! That's why it is such ugly lacrosse at a lot of these events. Let these kids play with the sole purpose of being part of something they can look back on and be proud of! The fact that some kids don't want to play in a Nassau / Suffolk All Star game because they are committed already says a lot the state of youth/young adult sports! A lot of the passion to win and compete has been taken away! it is sad!

Every event does not have to be about recruiting but this event is specifically for recruiting.

Look at the successful programs. They play together as much as they can. There is a seamless transition from JV to Varsity. Off season is just as important as in season. There is a sense of purpose a sense of pride in the program. The youth and middle school, are an extension of the high school program. The coaches, varsity and j.v. are involved in the team and it's play all season long. Alumni are very involved and even coach the program at all levels.

So is the program successfull or not? Not really sure I understand.

The coach sucks. He has talented players so team does well despite him being such a bad coach. I am not saying be has the best players but more than a handfull of very good and good players. They will never beat teams that are as talented or even closely talented to them because he horrible.

Sounds like your talking about Connetquot !!

If you had a committed kid, you might understand why they don't want to tryout. Because its all rigged. Why go out and score 5 goals and get over looked. Some kid whose not even as good gets pushed through. The kids all know. Same $hit with Brine and UA, all predetermined for the most part. Will some make it through? Very few.

This is so very true for Nassau/Suffolk game and UA tryout. Watched my kid play in his 3 UA games tonight 27 min each. In that time there were a few kids that just stood out. So of the 3 teams his team played I would say 6 or 7 studs. Most were midfield players. They got the most runs and opportunities. I really felt bad for our defense and goalies because our face off guy was really good and barely lost a draw. Play was in the offensive zone most of the games. There were some players who I saw play that did absolutely nothing in their games. I know them well and they have been committed for a while that will 100% get picked. Yet in the time I watched them play they did nothing better or worse than any other good player on the field. It's a shame because there are some very talented players that performed just as good or better than a number of the kids that will be picked for the UA team. Its too bad that half the kids doing the evaluating were just [lacrosse] on the sidelines rather than watching the games. MC and Lynott were even better to watch. Lol

A lot of the passion to win and compete has been taken away! it is sad!

Very few.

My committed son won't try out. It's a waste of time. He is playing in plenty of high quality recruiting tournaments this summer which is enough. UA is a big political money grab, unless you are uncommitted and looking to get exposure, or are a senior picked to play in the showcase.

The same thing happens in other regions for UA. Look at coaches and look at roster. South Region over half the players are in one way or another affiliated with coaches ( HS or Club) , not that they arent good players. Just that there are just as good if not better players who did better at tryout games.. Teams are predetermined with a few openings. Most of the time you are trying out for 5-8 openings in my opinion. The rest is picked ahead of time.
One team had no face off guy while others had two or three? The attack with no faceoff guy had limited action every game. Of course D, Defensive minded Middies and Goalie got lots of action. When UA sees a glaring mistake on a team, why dont rectify it??

On the flip side, some committed kids played and did NOT get picked because the coaches that committed them early got it wrong and they fell for the video highlight tape smoke and mirrors or they happened to only see the kids on their one best day ever. (th grade commitments were a total crapshoot with rare exception. Now that's done. See you all jr. year.
