So what league is everyone playing in this year? Will crabs and FCA join the St. Paul's league? Does the hoco league have a Elite Division(2021 did last year)as well as a AA division? Any teams moving up from B division last year? Good question, It will probably depend on how each coach and club enters their team. Not enough teams to create another bracket.

Hoco is the best league in the country. The best Nova, DC, Baltimore and Annapolis clubs play in it. A top philly team even make s the trip. No other league can provide the facilities that they do.
Winning the top hoco division at any age is a major accomplishment.

If you want to play in an age based league, play for a good rec travel team. Howard County has Leagues them as well (cobras). The highest level of competition is with grade based club teams.

Crying about it does nothing for anyone especially the players. Preparing for high school lax and a high level against other top players is ok with me. 1 year makes no difference and will not be an excuse in this house. Pull your kid out and go play in the rec league so he will be a stud . Good luck in high school.

Hoco league - the best place to see all the holdbacks in one place. Make it age based. Your not going to have a division for every numerical age in youth lacrosse! There would be 10 age groups vs. 5. Refs, coaches, fields, etc.; you just can't double the amount of teams overnight (with same amount of kids) and expect the support and resources to double, and be able to field full teams at practice! Youth sports prepare you for HS sports, hence one year you are older, one year you are younger as you alternate through the system (U9, U11, U13, etc). For club, grad year is only way to go. You are not going to build club teams through youth levels, then shake up the teams that dramatically by changing the format at HS levels. Just doesn't make sense and not going to happen.

You very well could have birth year teams in elite level lacrosse.
They already do that in elite travel soccer , hockey and basketball.
The rec level and second tier teams/programs have the 2 year mix of ages.
Soccer uses the same amount of fields and officials as lacrosse if not more in this area and they have no problem scheduling games.
When you have kids in their proper age groups the games are more competitive and safer for the players.
When you are in high school is when the club teams should be fielding graduation year teams not at the youth level.

You can very easily have aged based/birth year elite level lacrosse teams.
They already do that is elite soccer , ice hockey and basketball in this area.
Most rec or second tier programs have the blended ages
Soccer plays the same amount of games if not more then lacrosse in this area and they have plenty of fields and officials.
I having youth aged kids play against other kids that are the same birth year provide for better games and player safety at the elite level.
Once in high school graduation year teams are better for college coaches so they can see players who might not be playing alot as a freshman or Sophomore.
Plus once in high school you cannot hold back do to Maryland High school sports rules.
Personally I do not have a problem with a 1 year hold back but when you have players who have held back twice that is problem.

You buy into the grade based playing system of having select kids play down. Not sure how having select kids play down in 2025 grade makes everyone else in 2025 tough for HS. Keep telling yourself that. Corruption of youth sports is letting select players play down. Maryland is the land of Holdbacks and spineless USL HQ.

How is the coaching, are they working religiously on fundamentals (or just scrimmaging in practice), are they improving, are they enjoying the sport? Only things you need to concern yourself with at the youth level.

Actually, land of the lefty loopies, but thankfully lacrosse can cure even the toughest of cases, as long as the parents can bear the agony of watching 9 and 10 year olds play against one another. Hang in there, hon.

What a tool, if 1 year makes that much of a difference for your kid than go play Rec, wait , Rec is u9,u11,u13,u15 . So what is the complaint agin for your kid, maybe soccer is the sport he should be playing. Of course it makes no difference. The grade based system is total black eye on the sport. Last season had soon to be 16 years olds (In the case of the Crabs - an actual 16 year old 2020 player) play against kids that are 13 or 14. Completely absurd. HOCO should follow USL guidelines and go age based next year. Probably won't because the FCAs, Looneys and Crabs of the world will fly the coop and start their own grade based league. Too bad USL has no teeth.

The initial comment referenced 2020 kids (HS kids now), and there is no reason for a high school kid to play out of grade, in a grade-based league, where they are being evaluated by grade. If you are talking about youth levels, again there are age-based leagues (rec), and grade-based leagues (club). It is unreasonable for adults to criticize kids playing within the league criteria. Some chose to play up in both types of leagues, but that is a family decision. Criticize the league if you think you will get somewhere, but you won't, so probably just shut up.

Youth Leagues should be age based. Pretty simple concept except to apologists for a system that lets select kids play down. Maryland with its MIAA prefists/holdbacks have started a trend in youth lacrosse. The trend of getting my kid an advantage by being older than the majority of players in his Youth will continue and get bigger and bigger. Maybe you think that is a good trend for Youth lacrosse. The majority of people dont. Just because a family decides to hold their child back doesnt give them some special right to an advantage others exact same age dont get when they are 8 years old thru 14 years old in Youth athletics?? With the new grade based leagues allowing it.. Maybe you think as long as the rules say it is ok, why not? The majority of people dont think it is right for youth sports . Youth sports has never been about giving select children an advantage.

The fault lies with the parents -not the leagues- who think their child is so special that they can play against kids two years younger to look better. Take some responsibility for what you are doing and the message you send your man child.

The issue at this age is the fact that most private school kids do prefirst, and the average age spread between the two is about a year. The majority don't care, as the sport and club participation grows every year.

Or you could start a snowflake league. Membership would be through the roof. No the snowflake league is what you have now. A bunch of holdbacks that cant compete with kids their own age. Maybe these snowflakes should hit the wall, toughen up, etc Then they might be able to compete with children their own age. The holdbacks need to playdown not play at age! That is a snowflake. HS leagues are and always have been grade based. Not one person has ever complained about that . I guess you must want some 2020 straw man to attack to make your point?? 2020 until this year wasnt HS. Youth Lacrosse leagues have always been age based until last few years. There are just not many kids out there repeating grades for advantage at grade based club lax. The issue at this age is the fact that most private school kids do prefirst, and the average age spread between the two is about a year. The majority don't care, as the sport and club participation grows every year. Not sure where you live?? There are many kids being held back in prefirst. Every MIAA school has a class of prefirst that has a lower school. Even some MIAA B schools have a prefrist grade. And of course there are children that are not ready for various reasons in public's that are heldback from starting. Do these people think about Lacrosse while holding there child back. Maybe a few. Still doesnt change the fact that there are many of these heldback kids. And to say it isnt an advantage is a complete lie. The biggest complaints come from the best teams. All have multiple holdbacks. Most heldback kids arent playing B. Without these holdbacks they would be completely different teams. May still be good but different. There are too many holdbacks in youth lacrosse in Maryland. Youth sports was never intended to let select older kids playdown. And the majority do care. And if you think there will not be more and more kids heldback for Lacrosse, you are fooling yourself. Majority of coaches I know who have children in MIAA schools have held their child back regardless of birth month. They know the drill.
