Who cares what happens in college? The point of a holdback is to GET INTO a college you couldn't otherwise get into. Mission accomplished if it works. What happens once you're there is irrelevant.

Really- that's your goal? How about studying and spending money on a tutor if your kid doesn't care about riding the bench in college. Academics will get you a lot farther than leaving back your kid in the long run. Pathetic and desperate, but not everyone can be smart and talented so you got to do what you got to do - right?

posted on 2018 - maybe best to post here as well.

I am being told a few things help clarify.

1). Are the 18 months that follow 8th grade graduation the most important.

2). What are the best events to attend?

3). Do you really need to play for a travel team Summer going into Jr year or should you just play tournaments with your HS team and do Showcases?

Trying to save for college and this seems a bit much. Bought into the travel concept in the early years and still believe it has paid off in skill and exposure and being in the know. But saving 20K instead of spending 6-8K a year on this seems like a better choice.

The 18 months after graduating from 8th grade are important if your son is a top tier player. If he is middle tier I think the Junior and Senior year are more important as there are plenty of schools that wait till then to fill their recruiting pipeline.

Best event to attend are camps associated with the schools your interested in. Club coaches dont like telling you that because it takes money out of their pockets. I know several top tier kids who where recruited without ever having gone to a showcase or the summer tournament circuit. They only went to the schools camps starting at a young age.

My son is committed and plays with a travel team. It is important to keep building your skills. He also does the high school team. The showcases are not a good use of money unless you have pre arranged for coaches to watch your son.

Tryouts for Long Island Club teams at 2017. A word from experience.

A) Do not fall for the recruiting sell. Most of the top programs have their classes all filled up. Put your money into ACT/SAT prep it is way better spent.

B) If you get placed on the B team run. All B teams are mismanaged past 10th grade. You will show up to tournaments with 12 kids and no goalie. Go to a tournament in Mass and have 12 kids dressed for three games in 90 degree weather. Its a cluster#$@%.

C) Profesional Coaching: There is no focus on development, only on how cool a bucket hat they picked up for this tournament.

Again, Run if you are placed on the B team. They won't pull you up for that special tournament. They'll call on somebody from their 2018 squad because he's friends with the coach.

Run, Run, Run.

Even if you make the "A" team be careful. You might not receive any real playing time for recruiting purposes.

Everybody should listen to this advice!! So, true! We went through the same school or hard knocks. B-team is only there to fund the A-team and pad the program coffers. You are a fool if you fall for the B-team sell job. I've heard it all - Will So and so, and Bob so and so were once on the B-team and then were All-Americans. Maybe true but what are the odds? Better to run to the ACT tutor and just do individual showcases/prospect days.

Well, my son was not even a b team player. Made the express c team, which we declined. Thankfully to his HS coach, he is now an all American with a substantial scholarship to a great school! His friends on the a team did not fair as well, and the coaches that didnt believe in him now invite him to play for free. He may be an exception, but it can be done if the KID is motivated and wants it!

Ive heard that from a few people. Question, all those 2017 D1 committed names on the express website do they all STILL play for express? Or they just trying to hook people?

Most of the 2017 play on the Turtles. There 4-6 players that left the the Express over the last year, all are D1 commits for other clubs.

I'm thinking, with the 2014 Grad Class being the first large group of 9th grade early commits, would love to see the impact those 9th graders had in their freshman year of college. Will they still be on that committed team as a sophomore.

Wasn't Forry Smith, a 2016, the first freshmen to commit?

If you don't make the 2017 A team with a travel club located on long island and you have the privilege of being placed on the B Team you get to pay an additional $700.

Look at the tuition of each club before you commit to tryouts.

I noticed that! my son will stay away from that club. I also heard that the B team showed up to tournaments with no goalies, and never had a head coach. They only had college kids who sat there and made fun of the kids.

This summer the turtles wore express uniforms not turtle uni's so yes they are still and have always been a part of the Long Island Express organization. When they played out of state tourneys they have always been listed as the LI Express Turtles.
