Any other teams have pre-tryout evaluations??? They called it something else, but I think it's pretty shady that they want to see which kids they want to keep and which ones they want to get rid of the week before tryouts. Is this a common practice??
Fairly common.
Never heard of it as a formal thing, but if you want to make sure the kid gets a look, I would guess it's good for you. But only if the kid is good. Something like this will show strengths AND weaknesses!

Teams want to be sure about who they want to keep. Tryouts are a mystery. Most top teams will take anyone that makes the team better. Those practices are the last chance for kids to show they're worth keeping. Starters aside, everyone else is replaceable until about 6th or 7th grade. By then, teams are pretty set and everyone knows everyone else.
