Interstate Updates
Farmingdale 18, Darien 7: Kimberly Kolodny had six goals and one assist, Jamie Leone had one goal and six assists and Colleen Reynolds added three goals and two assists for Farmingdale (12-1) in non-league.

St. Anthony's 19, Ridgewood 11: Senior Kerrin Maurer scored a career high 12 points (seven goals and five assists) to lead St. Anthony's (10-2) over Ridgewood (16-1) in a non league game. The win snapped Ridgewood's 38 game winning streak which has encompassed two New Jersey state titles.

Paula Schmidt | Wantagh : She totaled 19 points in two wins last week, including a seven-goal, five-assist explosion on Monday.

Courtney Murphy | Floyd : Had 11 goals in two games last week, including the winner in the Colonials' 12-11 victory over West Babylon.

Bridget Vilbig | Island Trees : The junior had a career-high 10 goals and five assists in the Bulldogs' 27-18 win over Mepham on Monday.

Sacred Heart looked good over a lathargic Shoreham team. SH let them back in late to make it look close. Wantagh was efficient but not spectacular against a young,scrappy and talented Mt.Sinai team! Turnovers did them in. but look out for MS in the C's! Good goalie and talented youngsters!Garden City was atheletic and surgical in their win against Northport! Northports Defense could not hang with GC's Athlete's. Gilroy could not dominate GC's middy's. GC is the real deal!

Halftime score was 11-5 and the game was not that close. The Garden City attack positions were just dominant compared to anything else that we've seen in High School this season.

Northport runs much of their offense through one player (Shannon Gilroy). This is very typical of a High School varsity lacrosse team and works most of the time until you meet a nationally ranked team like Garden City. Garden City can score through three or four different positions and moves the ball well - check the scoring/assist table and you'll get that picture.

Way to GC against Northport! Made Northport look sloppy! As far as Mt Sinai not sure as I agree with your comments. Shoreham I thought played well considering the season they have had and their goalie is what saved their game.

Never mind Gilroy. What was the story of GC holding Fortunato to 1 point when she averaged over 7?

As far as Shoreham, I guess if you lower your expectations they competed, but they looked disinterested in the 1st half.They did gain some steam as the game progressed. What don't you agree about Mt. Sinai? They turned the ball over a lot and their D was suspect, but they did a good job in the middle of the field and had some talent in the offensive end. Loooking at their roster they are mostly 8th,9th and 10th graders. GC looked like a good D 1 college team!

Northports Fortunato and Gilroy were no match for Sullivan

I guess in time we will see with Mt Sinai I just think Wantagh was the stronger team, but you are right a lot of young talent. Garden City did play like a D1 team! As far as Shoreham I don't think you have to lower your standards they are also a young team with a new coach, lots of dropping passes and not getting ground balls, give them time too. Remember a lot of their players now did not necessarily "play" last year

Wantagh is certainly a strong contender this season, but Mount Sinai looks to have two years of very good varsity lacrosse in front of them on the girls side.

As for Shoreham-WR, the problem with dropped passes and ground balls is a fundamentals issue which is rarely ever adequately addessed within the context of a varsity program. This has to be addressed with a club or showcase team where the practices are more intense. I would look for more growth at the varsity level from Mount Sinai than Shoreham-WR for that reason.

can anyone tell me when girl's high school tryout were? can you still tryout? who should you contact? also is their going to be an empire state team this year? is their any other tryout going on like Under Armour,adidas???????

I'd like to know this too. How does one find out about these types of tryouts? My daughter's high school coach does not forward any of this type of information to the team members. Do you find out through the club teams?

Girl's High School Varsity tryouts were back in February/March and the High School League season is just about reaching the playoffs over the next two weeks. The Empire State Games were cancelled this year which is a tremendous loss as the ESGs were more about the entire experience than just the lacrosse matches.

Your final question was about the Under Armour Tournament. The Under Armour All-American Lacrosse Classic Underclassmen Tournament will be held from July 1st-3rd, 2011 at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. Our regional tryout events are as follows :

Long Island Boys - June 11th/12th - 6pm-10pm - John Burns Park in Massapequa - Coach : Mike CoachC

Long Island Girls - June 20th-21st - 3pm-7pm - John Burns Park in Massapequa - Coach : Corrine Broesler-Lomangino

Hope that this helps.

You assume that your High School coach, drawing a stipend typically in the $8,000 range, is plugged into the National Lacrosse Scene and wants to be a part of those programs.

Programs like Under Armour and Adidas are those "Fall Between the Cracks" types of showcase events. High School coaches are generally not tuned into these events as their Varsity teams are their players "most important focus". Meanwhile, Club and Premier lacrosse teams are charging to be part of those larger programs and as a result would not have an interest in advertising programs like Under Armour and Adidas.

Therefore, often times, such events only become known through word of mouth (like provided on the BOTC message boards), a committed High School Varsity coach/program, or searches executed by parents/players looking for other options.

The downside with these single showcase events is that there is no continuity for longer term player development or showcasing. Under Armour and Adidas are one shot deals - and very functional at that level - but most players are seeking a longer term arrangement. Hence, you will see cross-overs from High School teams into these events and from these events into Elite Summer teams.

If you are refferring to the School Girls tryout, It was a couple of weeks ago. The teams are picked already but they haven't released all the names yet. The girls were told if they made it at the end of the tryout.

In Suffolk, aside from Northport in the A and Hauppaugue in the B, all the teams listed below can beat each other on any given day.
Mt. Sinai, Sayville,West Islip,Hills,Bayshore,Ward Melville,floyd,Shoreham-Wading River, Rocky Point, Huntington, Harborfields, Eastport-South Manor, Comsewogue, Westhampton and Bayport-Blue Point.

I agree. You never know which team is going to be on, or off, on any given day.

Many of these games are affected by the ref's too much. I wish they would put the whistle away a bit and not be such a big part of the outcome of the game. I do think it is importtant to protect the players but they need to let them play a bit. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a girl lose the ball and immediately grab her head looking for a call(and usually get it). It seems the better actress you are the more calls you get. In addition it also seems that whenever a girl falls down whether it is incidental or on her own most ref's will give her the ball back! It is frustrating to watch and it is starting to promote drama queens. I also can't stomach watching some of the ref's take 3 minutes off the clock to move a girl 4 inches half way accross the field! It would be great to see the girls ability and execution dictate who comes away with a victory!

Late result : Farmingdale 14, Massapequa 9 in the Battle of Nassau Conference A1 unbeatens. Farmingdale finishes the league season at 7-0 and overall 12-1 with the lone loss coming to Garden City. Suddenly, Farmingdale and Northport become the Class A teams to beat in Section VIII and Section XI. Massapequa and Long Beach (longshot) will be the key Nassau challengers; Floyd, West Islip, Half Hollow Hills and Bay Shore are all looking for the Suffolk title.

I can't disagree with this either. Coming from a soccer background, I see a lot of dramatics that remind me of European football. Heh. But it works, so...<shrugging> In general, the reffing seems erratic, even within one game. I've felt that my daughter's team has been on both sides of reffing that really influenced the outcome of the game. And really, the bottom line should be how many balls find the back of the cage, not how many preferential calls your team gets.

While many readers will not like this answer, one reason why the game is called more tightly with the girls as opposed to the boys is that protective headgear (helmets) is not worn by the girls. Now, the female headgear vote "failed" earlier this year - so nothing changed. However it has always seemed obvious to us that standing in front of a thrown lacrosse ball at short distance should itself be enough reason to introduce helmets.

Was at the Sachem N-Longwood game for senior night. LW has a defender; didn't catch the name, but her number was 17. Late in the 2nd half, she took a clear the goalie and outran the whole Sachem team. No dodging or ducking; just straight running.

Who is this girl? All I know that she is black.

My point was not about whether they should wear head gear or not. It was about how the game is being called. i personally don't think head gear will solve much. The boys still get hit in the head a lot and there are plenty of penalties given out for it. Right now there are no helmets and the ref's have to call the game under the current rules and guidelines. They have the ability to keep the whistle to themselves unless they feel the game is getting dangerous. Awarding players for pretending to get hit or dramatically falling down is rediculous! In hocky if you "take a dive" the penalty is on that player. I would love to see that rule put in! For now I would be satisfied if the ref's tried a bit harder not to be part of the game and let the girls play to see which team is actually better. As it stands now I think they actually play lacrosse about 25 of the 50 minutes.
