Why do u think tryouts will be unfair? Let's be honest most of the Long Island team will be 2018's. I will be surprised to see 4 or 5 2019's. Who is coaching Long Island team? More importantly, who are the evaluators and what club affiliation do they have? Then you will be able to determine which kids are pre-determined to make it. Pretty much how it goes every year.

It happens the same way every year. You'd think Brine, a National Lacrosse brand, would want their name associated with a legit program. Why can't they bring in evaluators from outside the area with no ties to any clubs or High Schools? Should be simple to do?

if they did, they would have to charge a lot more for the tryout/eval as does the 3d organization. who is going to pay airfare and accommodations? Why do u think tryouts will be unfair? wow, what a broad generalization, it sounds like you are already making excused for your child and tryouts haven't even happened yet. if brine is in bed with 91, why were there one 2 or 3 91 players 2017/2018 on last years brine nationals team and why were the turtles so represented? Brine Nationals is an organization that goes around the country to select locations and holds tryout to for 24 team for middle school and high school, they all get together for four days of training and competition against the other regions at the soccerplex in MD, usually the last week of june thru first week of july. this is truly a great experience for both the MS and HS kids. they really get a chance to see how they measure with what is considered to be the best of other regions. Can someone explain what is the brine national tryout is?

This year his son plays for 91 Extreme a 2018 team and last year he didn't. No excuses just facts. A lot of players are selected by reputation not performance. Depends on who you play for and who's lawn you mow. Also doesn't hurt to have the directors son play for your team. If two players are close in talent who do you think will get the nod. This is not good for Brine a national brand. Wish they would bring in unbiased evaluators not coaches of local teams.

You're 100 percent correct. Last year in the HS tryout they had local HS coaches, not from strong programs. Just so happens 3 or 4 players from each HS coach got on the team. Imagine the chances??? It seems so simple to get non biased evaluators from outside the area. Certainly enough money involved to make that happen. Bit of a sham job... Good lesson for the kids in "it's who you know, not what you know". Happens in every facet of life.

the problem is it is an open tryout Anyone with checkbook can register. Given the number of players who need to be evaluated, there is a very high likelihood a great player can be missed and a marginal player can sneak by the evaluators
I actually think previous knowledge of player strength and weakness provides an improved evaluation process.
If this was not the case, colleges would not need to recruit they could simply tell interested HS school seniors to show up one weekend for a tryout and pick a recruit list from their own blind tryout

Lets see if they actually do this. Just wish tryout was fair and not predetermined. It seems too often that players that play for the coaches doing the evaluations make it. There were a bunch last year.

What don't you understand? Nothing to be afraid of... Just facing facts. There are kids that are on teams other than 91 xtreme that are just as big strong and talented. Just because they don't get picked for this sham team doesn't mean they won't get recruited in the coming years. No big deal. I promise you no college coach is going to recruit your son in the coming years just because he played on a certain team. The player needs to show his talent. This is why the individual showcases are becoming the venue of choice for many college coaches.

When nepotism exists, those positions filled unfairly will take away roster spots from deserving players regardless of the tryout method used. There are other points to consider too:
-Not all players with connections are undeserving of their roster spots. -A two hour tryout is never fair considering that two hours is not a very long time. It is nearly impossible to whittle down from 150 to 25 (or even 50) with only two hours worth of lacrosse. -A poor player can hide their weak spots for two hours -A great player can lack the reps to showcase their greatness -Height/Size is the 1st thing coaches will notice and I can tell you the team will be a lot taller than it should be given not all lacrosse skill, talent and heart is derived from height
A strong player should want both their two hour performance and their overall resume taken into consideration for team selection

A strong player should want both their two hour performance and their overall resume taken into consideration for team selection I posted above. Please understand I am not inferring that all spots will be undeserving. Most will be very deserving. I agree with many of your points. Your point about size and hieght is interesting. It should be noted that the D1 landscape is changing in favor of bigger stonger players. As mentioned on this forum before, D1 lax is drawing more athletes that formerly would have pursed D1 football. Hence the size is ever increasing of the players being recruited. Just take a look at Lacrosse magazine that just came out. Front cover is dedicated to the training that College Lax players are doing. They are lifting like football players. I also understand that there are exceptions, and smaller sized players with insane skills can still compete at the highest level. (Sankey, Mathies) However the overall trend is towards bigger, stronger, faster players. To the posters point, this team will most likely echo the trend as it realtes to the size of the players chosen

Has anyone else been on the 3d website recently? The application page shows that most grades/positions are still open. Applications were orginally due the end of August with notificiations in mid-September. Very disappointed that this "highly competitive" event is not sold out. Of course the registration fee which we eagerly paid back in September is non-refundable. I have heard from a 2017 parent that it was a positive experience last year -- not from a recruiting or exposure standpoint, but from a development/competition standpoint.
One point, which I don't think I have seen mentioned, is exposure to a showcase type event at an early stage. Many kids are used to playing with their top travel teams. They run a set offense, everyone shares the ball and is familiar with each other. I think it is a benefit to break out of that environment and let the player compete in a showcase/tryout type environement where he is not going to be 100% comfortable with his teammates. Having this experience as a 2018 and when the recruiting pressure is not on, seems like a benefit, if you can deal with the cost. I am a NJ Dad whose son went to 3D Blue Chip and then made it to the summer Jake Reed event. In my opinion, the event is NOT a recruiting event (even Jake Reed in the summer really isn't yet) nor should you expect it to be given the age. However, it was very well run, combined training/development with the boys' first showcase-type experience which will be valuable down the line, had a great coach to kid ratio, and the competition was pretty darn good. Also, for 8th graders, it is the ONLY way to get to the Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip summer event. That event is definately not the be-all and end-all for 8th graders/rising freshman come summer, but it is a great way to see where your son stands relative to the better players across the country and again get great showcase-type experience. The cost is another matter. Very expensive to do these events, however, if that is not a real issue, I would highly recommend both 3D Blue Chip and Jake Reed if you son is selected.

What is the appropriate number of times to hold your child back in order to get D1 looks?
I already red-shirted my boy in Kindergarten and will consider reclassifying him at the end of 8th grade.
Of course he is ready to do a post grad year at the end of HS.
