The amount of WINS doesn't mean anything at this age for all 2017 teams, its about getting noticed by the colleges. Learn the process before you talk stupid.

A famous Herm Edwards quote: "You play to win the game!" And look where that got him.....at the 2017 age, you are looking to get exposure to college coaches, not necessarily win. Teams should be shooting for getting the boys exposure, which generally means equal playing time so all boys have an opporutnity to be seen.

It's not a scrimmage like college fall ball where everyone plays and no score is kept. New flash - it's called a game and if you want your son on a team that doesn't play to win then why bother playing summer lax at all. Save your money and your time. You should find another, less competitive, way to showcase your sons playing ability.

Where did that attitude get Herm? To a good career in the NFL then success as a NFL head coach and now a lucrative broadcasting job. Not bad......

A famous Herm Edwards quote: "You play to win the game!" Herm Edwards was a decent football player, awful coach, and is dreadful on ESPN. You need to figure it out for your son. The posters are 100 percent right. College coaches care nothing of scores. In fact, many coaches are showing more interest in individual showcase events. Kids on random teams, a true representation of lax IQ and skill sets. I assure you, they really don't care about the score of showcase games. I will give you that coaches do check out teams that are winning a lot at a tournament, to see what the buzz is all about. However, if your son is not a major contributor on such a team, it could actually hurt him.

If anyone takes the time to search the internet, look for the Herm Edwards keynote address at the US Lacrosse National Conference from two years back. Watch the video of his presentation and then argue about the applicability of his lessons to youth sports. If you believe that he was an awful coach, perhaps we need to rethink what "coaching" is all about.

Not one person said they are not playing to win. The point is that it doesn't matter who wins as long as you are competitive and you showcase your talents. College coaches rarely stay for a whole game and they really don't care what the score is.

He did, however, state the facts with regard to the previous poster wanting every kid to have equal playing time so the college coaches can see his kid who obviously isn't an impact player on that team. I actually agree that the coaches could care less on the score; but they WILL be at the championship games so I guess your team has to win SOMETIMES to get to that game. I'm not sure what the college coaches care the least about - what team wins OR the second and third lines. ouch..

Just because he memorized a speech, most likely written by someone else, and delivered it, still doesn't make him a good coach. There's a guy in DC right now that delivers great speeches too... have you taken a look at the country lately? Need I say more...

PRESUMABLY....
winning teams go further in tourneys - leads to playing against incredible competition - leads to more exposure to college coaches there watching both teams - leads to potential top tier colleges
and I forgot to mention that the teams that win a lot, for the most part, have coaches that can pick up a phone and contact most colleges coaches BECAUSE of having teams that win. Expecting more exposure to college coaches since they are watching both teams demonstrates a misunderstanding of the recruiting process. College coaches attend games to which they are both invited and where they have particular players that they have been invited to see. College coaches do not randomly show up at a youth game, championship or otherwise, hoping to just pick up a couple of players cold. Planning your recruiting cycle on the premise that a coach will just notice your son (or daughter) because they have made a tournament finals will lead to failure. Researching your Top Ten Academic and Top Ten Athletic choices, writing to those coaches, and tracking their attendance at your games, championships or otherwise, will yield higher quality results. Also, your correlation that only winning club coaches can contact college coaches is clearly an error. For every winning team, there is a losing team on the national or regional stage. Certainly, college coaches will recruit from both pools simply because they are recruiting players not teams. Think about it.

From there we visited these schools and then accepted a great offer to a top D1 program. I know of other kids who had it happen the same way.

Many times a player is noticed because a good coaches eyes are wide open and catches a glimpse of another player either playing with or against a player the coach was initially looking at. That has always happened and will always happen. Many times a player getting looked at has teammates just as deserving and garner interest by there support and play for the initial player. In addition, the player/s the intended player is covering/against is also by default being looking at. Both of those bring opportunities to players outside of the initial player. PRESUMABLY....

Many teams when hitting the recruiting trail tell their players "if you feel you're not getting enough play time or a short shift, let us (coaches) know we'll make sure you get time". Also, teams will give players more time even over more skilled players when they know a coach is there to see a specific player. Why would any parent pay to be on a team, regardless of how good it is, if the kid is not playing in front of the coaches? It's all about playing good competition and playing time. It's about getting exposure in front of the college coaches. This is why you're seeing more and more growth in the individual showcases and college specific prospect and clinic days. If you're worried about W-L, go to the 2020-2022 threads, seems like you're more in tune with that crowd.

Why would parents pay $$ for Their kid to be on a team and not play. I seem to recall last year that was a big issue with some top teams. I somehow think they thought there was value being associated with the "top" instead of the b or c teams. I also think of summer tourneys as tourneys. They are not showcases. That word is thrown around way too much and it could confuse the simple minds.

There is a packed summer, just with camps and showcases.

Having gone through it with my older son, when you go to individual showcases or prospect camps, players are randomly divided up on different teams, some teams happen to be a lot stronger than others. No one is watching the scoreboard, they are watching the individuals. (Ironically, defensemen love being on the weaker teams because they see a lot more action.) Ahead of the fall (individual and team) showcases, coaches have a 'watchlist' of players based on profile questionaires, discussions w/ club coaches, maybe Brine or Jake Reed, etc. Although everyone will get a look, coaches do have several kids on their radar that they plan on watching first. Not one person said they are not playing to win. The point is that it doesn't matter who wins as long as you are competitive and you showcase your talents. College coaches rarely stay for a whole game and they really don't care what the score is. PRESUMABLY.... winning teams go further in tourneys - leads to playing against incredible competition - leads to more exposure to college coaches there watching both teams - leads to potential top tier colleges and I forgot to mention that the teams that win a lot, for the most part, have coaches that can pick up a phone and contact most colleges coaches BECAUSE of having teams that win.

Jesters are fine, they were very competitive at the A level last summer, pretty even with Outlaws and fl$ and gave 91 Orange a decent run at the LI Lax fest. Let me guess what team your son is on? Whats actually hysterical is how you actually think any of this actually matters, get a life.

You two are like two ships passing in the night. You are both probably correct. Coaches don't care about the actual score or record of a team but they do care about seeing kids play against the best competition (e.g., the other best kids). This can only happen if the team does well overall or has a great reputation and can make it to the most competitive tournaments. I can tell you first hand, for example, coaches will watch Crabs play Dukes.

Sick and tired of people trying to mention the Jesters in the same sentence as 91 orange and True Blue..that is completely false the jesters did not do anything against Tb and 91 orange handled them easily..
