Congrats to him, very good player. But what about all the whinning from LI Express parents about playing against older kids. A 2017 who is almost 16? Please.

You need to get over the fact that for many different reasons kids repeat a year. And in the case of 2017's many of those that are referred to as being "old" doesn't necessarily mean they are almost turning 16! In fact, many started high school as 14 and still are 14 and have until Nov 30 to turn 15 to be technically considered repeaters in the state of NY. But besides that, do yourself a favor and check out some top top lax schools and the ages of their freshman - you can find them in their bios. Yea, yea, I know, not fair. But seriously, stop the whining. It's getting old.

Don't you people get it? Colleges don't care how old the kid is. It goes strictly by graduating year, yes it puts some kids who are the traditional age for their grade a disadvantage. But the older kids are NOT breaking any rules. It was their parents choice for whatever reason, you could have done it too, so stop crying and man up. The prep school model has it all well planned and executed, thats why roughly 80%+ of top 20 D1 rosters are made up of prep school kids! Most "regular" kids have many more obstacles to over come than most of us first timers ever thought.

Best post on the subject yet! My son is a late 1999 birthday and I am actually kicking myself that I didnt hold him back. It looks like a PG year will be in his future. Live and learn.

We did the same thing with our daughter, and I'm starting to regret it too! What's a PG year? Prep school, or Jr college?

Cut the "...you people don't get it.." bit. They do. Yes the players who have potential are entering college as older Freshman, College coaches like it, why wouldn't they, the players come in older stronger faster smarter.

I have a 7th grader, if I held him back a year in 3rd then he would currently be in 6th. He would for sure be playing 91 crush (the best 2020 team in the country - the only part not sarcasm) and be getting noticed @ close to 5'7 150 (bigger than some HS freshman). I'd also probably joke with him and let him drive into the parking-lots of the tournaments so people could talk (because that is us). and you know Id probably also complain if he didn't get pulled up to play JV or varsity.

But back to the PG/held-back conversation, it is the reality and many are doing it. Quite honestly I would not be surprised if I explored the option for 8th or 9th grade. But I would not only being do it for athletic reasons but academics.

Now can someone lay out how you did it? How does it work if you want to first go to STM LUHI STJ Friends STA then Chaminade (or visa versa)

If someone would outline that then I would think this site is helpful.

Jr college will take away your years of eligibility for the years you play. PG is prep school. Not sure How the LI Catholic's position themselves on this.

wonder why this kid plays for a LI club when he has Pedators and Primetime? Seems strange, unless we agree that Express is a surperior program, and worth the 2 hr+ commute. He may be "from" bronxville but trained on LI.

The Predators only started last year with the 2017 age group. The 2014 age group existed for only a couple of years and the Predators helped get a lot of their kids recruited. If the Predators had existed four or five years ago when this kid began his career things may have worked out differently. The fact that this kid plays with the express has more to do with past decisions when the Predators option didn't exist for him. It doesn't mean the Express program is superior.

So how does a PG year work ? Instead of being recruited as a 2017 and committing as a soph / junior he/she will wait until 2018 when they are in a PG school to try and commit ? Will there be spots available or do you committ as a 2018 when your a junior for 2017?

Sad that Lacrosse has come down to all this, and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Does this nonsence go on in football and basketball as well?

Most times if a college is interested in you but their recruiting year is full for that year, they will commit to your kid for the following year and suggest you do a year at a Prep school. So technically youll be committed but it will be a year delayed and with the condition that you go to a prep school.

Exactly. And isn't he a Terp Black now ORANGE player? Haven't several of you called his team a "B team" over the past year or so on this board? Many more to come from this talented motivated group.

Are you people actually going to do this again? Did you not learn anything from last year? Just shut your mouths & let you SONS play lacrosse! You are seriously going to come on this site & pound your chest that your sons team is the best because a kid on his team was the first to sign? You do understand the recruiting process, correct? The parents had to make the contact first & if that was their choice (& apparently it was a good one) good for them. It has nothing to do with you, your sons team, or the fact that he lives in Westchester or LI. The next couple of years are going to be very exciting for a lot of these kids, good luck to them all! Please let us NOT have to listen to your insecure ranting's for the next 6 months!!!

Looking like clowns with those uniforms. But seriously, how would anyone know when tryouts just ended? You'll get the "they look like they upgrade a lot" from those on the team, which means nothing.

Last years first was a MD prep school f/o kid to Virginia. The fist LI kid from 2016 was also a f/o kid to Penn state. Both are listed in top 60 sophomore ranking in IL.

Here is an IL article about the first 2017 to commit. Clearly states that the first 2 2017 commits have already turned 15 earlier this year.

You people up in Long Island are obsessed with age. We have played against this kid many times down here in Maryland. What makes him an excellent player is not his age , it is that he has an MIAA style game with an incredible stick. It took that kid years of hard work to get that. It is not something that magically happens when you turn 15.

The difference is a great 15 year old 2017 player would normally be a good 15 year old 2016 player!

Wrong. Forrey Smith was the first to commit last year (Hopkins). Sam Offut committed afterwards to UVA (and there was at least one kid who committed between them.

The article refers to the player as "with his commitment became the youngest player to ever commit to play college lacrosse." The article also mentions he is already 15 (a year older than the typical 2017 - age appropriate for 2016)

Whereas he is the earliest academically (three weeks into Freshman year) I do not think he is the youngest. Surely at least one of the 2016s who have committed were not kindergarten red-shirts.

Its his exposure through LI Express I think the poster was referring to in the LI connection. While Bronxville has a good team, im sure the training received from his club added to the recipe...

What magically happens when you turn 15 is youre bigger, stronger and faster than the 13 and 14 year olds your playing against so you look like a much better player than you really are. Get it?

You people down in MD are obsessed with manipulating the system to your advantage. I have to agree with the previous poster that a year makes a huge difference at 15, boys change dramatically from year to year at that age. An extra year of growth is huge, esspecially if you have the skill set to back it up! The % of kids older than the average for their school year being recruited early is proof, statistically significant. Lets call it what it is.....UNFAIR advantage!!

Just to put a fine point on it - Jake Reed said 82 out of the 120 kids at this summer's Jake Reed Rising Freshman Camp (2017s) were a year older than what a typical 2017s age would imply. My son was there and is normal age, but I must be the idiot as so many kids are being held back.

That's why Lax is a rich mans sport. Not all of us can afford to hold our kids back and pay for extra years of school. My son who is a Varsity player headed to D1 is already saying that when he has kids, he will hold them back. Sad! If I could do all over again, I would hold my boys back a year from kindergarten. That seems like the best time to do it. I guess I never got the memo!

That's funny my 9th grade son also says if he ever has kids he will hold them back. He says the best 2 players on his team are almost 2 years older than him but in the same grade.

When I was 14 I weighed 124 lbs. One year later I hit a growth spurt and grew 3-4 inches and put on almost 40 pounds. It's a big difference.

For those of you who are mathematically challenged in MD and PA, that's nearly 70 PERCENT of all the kids that made Jake Reed were a year or more older. Really? That is so shocking. I can't imagine that a year or more of physical maturity would make a difference in athletics. What are the chances?
When will respected people in this sport step up and right this disgraceful wrong??? I challenge folks like Reed and others to stop fueling this sitation and go to an age based system for their camps. This way, everyone is on an even playing field. Additionally, college coaches will actually get a better representation of the players abilities are against competition their own age. A win-win for everyone. I further challenge US Lacrosse and tournament organizers to enforce strict age rules. Further, LI clubs should band together and keep our teams away from tournaments that do not go by these rules. When you cut off the cash flow, you'll get people's attention. Also, parents, demand from your teams that they only play verified age based tournaments. Those teams that want to play up, should obviously be free to do so. This has got to be stopped. NO OTHER SPORT OPERATES LIKE THIS!

ok: so to move this commitment discussion forward; our true 14 yo has a legit offer on the table to take if he wants to a D1 school.

we are not so comfortable with the concept as what is to stop a school from taking the offer back on a purely verbal agreement if the kid blows out a knee or some other unfortunate situation in the interim?

Then of course there are the stringent academic requirements of this particular institution. So if one takes the offer and commits, and does not meet the prerequisite conditions; will that same kid be able to take other offers later on down the road to other schools if they come available?

thanks for any insight from those who may have been there

What magically happens when you turn 15 is youre bigger, stronger and faster than the 13 and 14 year olds your playing against so you look like a much better player than you really are. Get it?

You people down in MD are obsessed with manipulating the system to your advantage. Well said, but doubt it will happen, too far gone

Injuries, academic ineligibility, unbecoming conduct, and inability to perform are all elements that could result in an early verbal offer being withdrawn. College coaches do NOT want to gain a reputation for rescinding offers as that will impact the effectiveness of their future recruiting efforts. That said, athletic scholarships in lacrosse will not be wasted on student-athletes that cannot play.

Schools that have extended a verbal offer to an athlete will almost always prequalify the applicant during their junior year, require a formal application during the early admissions process, and issue what is known as a "likely letter" should any academic eligibility components still be missing. If your student-athlete is not clearing the admissions bar, you will know it earlier rather than later. You should (repeat, should) have time in the later half of junior year and early senior year to make needed adjustments although athletic scholarship money will almost certainly have been allocated.
