I’m sorry but no one is going to tradition. The girls on the team openly talk about leaving to go elsewhere amongst themselves on sidelines in ear shot of any other teams nearby. If you look at their rosters yes they have some recruits but so does every other club. THe amount of non garden city kids on the rosters vs garden city residents is a political nightmare. You are trying to break into a group that’s been friends since kindergarten why would you put your kid through that?

We have been going back and forth on a family on tryouts and have gathered the following.

Liberty is a hard no for us for distance reasons but also because the coaches are going after people from other clubs. It makes us think that their small roster is a problem and that they’ll take just about anyone at this point.

Tradition seems to do good by kids but the garden city culture of kids who have been together forever opening their doors at the heart of when these girls start to get into their mean girl walks of life is daunting.

We were thinking about FLG or igloo for a few reasons. FLG practices close to where we live. We looked at their most recent scores and it seems they’re doing decent this summer. We know someone on igloo who talks about how much they were given this year with training practices but also team building stuff. The group is competing with top 50 teams and also seems to be having fun and getting a lot of extra field time.

Our other thought was maybe trying for jesters blue. We don’t know anyone who plays there but they seem to be playing weak teams so we aren’t sure how to gauge the talent level. I don’t think she has a shot at making their black team.

Jesters black is doing well but is heavy attack and mid.

Tradition coaches kid is the star and he doesn’t have the time to commit to player development.

YJ maget is obviously strong but there is a huge drop between them and carranante compared to Fey and Ramos

Do others suspect a lot of change this summer in rosters ? The 2028 class is an odd group

There are always changes. If Liberty can recruit the top 2-3 Tradition kids, they would easily be a top 10-15 team. If Caranante practicee a bit more, that team will be great. FLG kids can help TG or Liberty too.... so many options..

The best liberty players are being recruited to YJ, it’s why they moved their red goalie up because they got wind YJ was going after her.

Pretty sure it's not true about their goalie

If you are a superstar, yes, you may not go to Tradition. But if you are a great player, but you don't get good playing time in an A team, you would consider Tradition. The other alternatives in Nassau would be breaking into a group with Manhasset kids or Massapequa kids. If what you said is true about the kids leaving, it would be smart for Liberty/Jesters or TG go after those kids....

Just curious - why would FLG fold? They're having a good season - certainly not a top ranked team, but somewhere in the middle for LI.

At that talent level, you should consider legacy or YJ B and C teams. Legacy probably develops players better than any club on the island. Tradition always loses its top players after 8th grade (look at what happened to the 27 and 26 teams).

FLG develops girls well, too. But the question is do you want to deal with Wink? I have no issue with him, but he rubs alot of people the wrong way.

Igloo is adding a second team this year. Yes, they had a TON of training (practices, film, etc.) - but I'm not so sure it's netting the results they expected. But, from conversations with parents on that team, it was a rather large commitment of time.

If your girl is looking for that kind of intensity, it does look like YJ is having an uphill battle again this year, which maybe means they are going to shake things up....again.

Though distance may be a consideration - I really like what I am seeing program wise with LaxOn,theclubranbyascamarist, theclubranbyascamarist. Same with Legacy. Legacy made a major change with their 2028s a few years ago, and the focus seems to be doing them well.

In any case, I tend to be of the mind that this would be the last year for a 28 to make a change (especially if they were considering playing in college). It feels like this is the point where rosters are set for the girls to work through their HS years as a consistent team.

Igloo parent here.
Yes we had a ton of practices, training, film sessions and team bonding this season. This team was a tremendous commitment and my family had never had a better lacrosse season in 5 years.
Not netting results? We started the spring in the 140s and I believe we are ranked 80 right now. I realize that rankings are not the only answer, but I do not have any other way to explain the 180 degree turn I saw this team do in a season.

The coaches are great, the players are great and the parent s are great.

This team worked really hard this year and they all seemed to have fun doing it.

There is a free first look coming up where you can come down and play with the team. I recommend everyone to come over and see what is going on. The info is on the Igloo website.

I am interested in hearing more about Traditions program from anyone who has a daughter currently playing or a recent former player. Pros and Cons, please.

Tradition is a good alternative to YJ/Top Gun/Jesters. Esp. if you value playing time. Their 28 has some great talents but not top to bottom strong. That's why they do not rank high. Now that they open it to outside of GC, it should attract some more talents. Their 25 commit is an impressive list.

lot of town drama… a lot of egos. Think our coach may be done as the daughter is being heavily recruited to other clubs. On the field it is hit or miss and inconsistent. The whole team is run through the midfield and the attack doesn’t really get to do much. We will be exploring other options next year.

If you are considering Tradition, I think Liberty Black has an edge over Tradition. Small roster, paid coach, more competitive team. I bet kids from Tradition who consider leaving would try out Liberty.

We are on Long Island and think what matters is playing time. Why bother going to top 10 club if you’re not going to play meaningful minutes. Think Tradition or Liberty are fine clubs

What’s up with YJ B team? They seem to have a terrible summer. Losing to or tying mediocre teams.

Probably because of the big egos of some players, the cliques and the lack of team work/disciplines and coaches are not addressing these team culture.

I don't think they are worse off than many other teams we have experiences with. Wish my daughter made it to Liberty Black and will try again. Very pleasant kids.

TG 2028s having an awful year. Expect their best kids to look elsewhere. 91 2028s not very strong but a lot of practices - heavy focus on stick skills.

Dad coach but a reputable one. Doesn't favor his own kid or kid's closest friends like many other daddy coaches. He was an excellent player in college (Ivy) with a National Championship title. The challenge is whether they can attract out of town talents. People garbage them for two reasons, they are afraid that their own kids won't make the team. Or other clubs want to garbage them so that players would try out elsewhere.

So is every LI 2028 team except Maget. So, where they all move around and have the same outcome next year?

What’s up with jesters black offerjng a bunch of spots before tryouts? I know of 4 kids offered “starting spots” from attack through defense . Is this just a tactic to recruit kids over? What’s the deal?

Tryouts are already stressful enough and now they have all these pre-tryout deals. That's just insane.

Heard Igloo did the same thing. Offered almost everyone on the A team last year a spot before tryouts- their A team is mostly filled (except for one or 2 spots) and now they are trying to fill the 2nd team they are starting this year.

Unpopular opinion - but at this age, it should be expected that rosters are pretty set, and there is going to be less movement than we've seen in the younger years (rumors be damned). And when there are spots, coaches are going to be super specific to field them in alignment with the teams that they have been working with. Starting over from scratch every year just doesn't make sense - especially when teams go head first into fall ball. Don't love it (than why even bother with a tryout?), but it is what it is.

I agree. "Offering" the existing player a spot pre tryout is very different from offering a new player one at this age. Esp. if they are expanding into a 2nd team, they have to make sure existing players stay...

YJ "poaching" at American Select? It's almost entirely made up of YJ girls as it is.

Also - if a girl is willing to leave their team, is it really "poaching"? A girl who can be convinced to leave her team was looking to leave, anyway.

Every club invited kids from every club to tryouts. Private jesters evals last week for black, private eval for carranante a few days ago, first look for igloo, liberty going after YJ carranante kids and even offering them spots mid year to leave, jesters poaching at excelsior. Every club is doing it if they’re trying to build the best teams. If a kid wants to leave they’ll leave. If not they’ll decline. Only time it becomes a problem is when the owners heads are too big and they get upset someone wants ther kids.
