You obviously have no idea about lacrosse as the 4th and 5th poles are usually the LSM's...the most athletic players on field. There is a book by Bob Scott, Lacrosse Technique and Tradition,,, seek it out. Learn a few things

That is all because they are trying to get the kids playing time since they aren’t in the top 3 close defense players. It doesn’t even mean they are the best LSM on the team.

So let me get this straight. You are all suggesting that you take your 4th or 5th best pole, put them on the wing for faceoffs and expect them to get the groundball or, if they lose the faceoff, cover the opposing team's best middie and have the speed to get off the field quickly in a change of possession or have the stick skills and stamina to get downfield on a fast break and either make the right pass, preserve possession or go in and score. Good luck playing in the Elite division and in high school because the LSM's at that level are not the 4th or 5th best poles...

Correct. They can’t hack it at close so they play LSM. Most of the time. They cannot read offense, slide at the right time, slide physically enough, play off ball in the passing lanes, etc, etc. sure your kid is a nice player but if he could do all those other things he would play close. Not just a dad comment either. Coach, player…at this age the best players play. If he plays LSM he is the 4th or 5th pole on the team

My son plays LSM and I’ve always thought of it as a specialist position like faceoff since he runs off when possession is gained unless there’s a fast break. But a few years ago a Virginia LSM won midfielder of the year in college lacrosse, which apparently was a big deal because it’s always been an offensive award. I’m assuming that’s in part why you hedged with “Most of the time.” Maybe the UVA guy was a unicorn. Maybe the position is evolving. Would love some knowledgeable lacrosse people to chime in.

Learn a few things It's important to point out that "who should play LSM" and "who actually plays LSM" are 2 totally different things before HS. Partly because youth coaches can't wait to get them off the field. Zero offensive training given. And those poles' offensive stick skills are often horrible. My son's team had 3 part time LSMs last year...yes, ridiculous. The #3 defenseman...too small for now. The #8 defenseman.....just wanting reps The #7 middie....just wanting reps.

Original LSM's need to be good poster here. College coaches recruit in this order of priority: Goalie. FOGO, SSDM, LSM. Teams like Next Level, Leading Edge, 91 Pride have legit LSM. Not kids the lower portion of thr detox chart being hidden. Those kids are game changers. You hear opposing coaches yell Bury the Pole , because they don't want to dodge the kid. As far as their place in youth lacrosse, look at the higher level teams and see what they are doing. All 3 of the teams named here are top 10.

I can assure you that the elite HOCO teams recruit specific players for the LSM role and those players are listed as LSM's. My son plays on an elite team and their D1 would not be able to play LSM at the same level as their student LSM. Likewise, the LSM, while solid at close D, is not on the same level as the starters in that role.

Your analogy is nonsense ??? Once again, on starting line up , first three close D are 1-3 due to being on field at start and listed as D, 4 and 5 are LSM due to not being out there until ball goes into Defensive zone. Those are the guys that play. Out on field . Is there a dept chart behind the close D and LSM,,,yeaaa... All this has nothing to do with who is best or athletic. Some thick people here who have never done a lineup let alone coached at any level.

At lower levels and younger ages you obviously don't have the specialization and one player will fill 2 (or even 3) of those roles.

Even tho I usually put 2 LSM's in my starting lineups. Unfortunately I forgot who I was dealing with here. Many dads who main contribution to lacrosse is " wheels, wheels " ... And yes, lower level it is not as important or even needed most times, but the young boys like to see the lineup too.

Tryouts have settled now...........any pulse / info on:
1. Hawks Goalie? With there starting goalie moving, who did they pick up? I've heard the old goalie is going to still fly in for tournaments potentially.
2. FCA Attack? Did they pick up anyone to replace there big lefty who they lost to age verification? What about there other goalie?
3. Crabs? Heard they lost there best midfielder due to moving as well. Pick up anyone new?
4. Team 91?? Did they have enough for a team? Are they going to drop out of the elite division finally or is VLC going to save them again due to their team collapsing?
5. Preds - Definitely picked up some pieces. Two teams now. On the up swing.
What teams improved overall?

I can assure you that the elite HOCO teams recruit specific players for the LSM role and those players are listed as LSM's. My son plays on an elite team and their D1 would not be able to play LSM at the same level as their student LSM. Likewise, the LSM, while solid at close D, is not on the same level as the starters in that role. I actually have no problem with this statement except for the word "recruit." These kids were in 6th grade just 7 weeks ago. A third haven't hit puberty. Another third are just hitting it. Of the third who hit puberty early, many of them are close to being done growing (the 6'1" poles and 5'10" goalies). What any player, especially at LSM, looks like at age 12 is no promise of future return. As a coach, a player, and a parent, I have been through that process. Back to the point..... How many 12 year olds in the area, will these coaches chase down prior to tryouts (aka "recruit")? At goalie, Fogo, lefty attack yes, a few of them get lots of calls. SSDM? No. LSM? No way. My son plays Mid at a high level and he didn't get calls from coaches until tryouts had already started, and there were no promises, just "if he plays at tryouts the way I've seen him play, it should be easy". That's not "recruiting." That's just a sales call. Thankful for their time and interest, absolutely, but I would not call it recruiting.

Funny how Preds Dad left out the part about losing several of their best players to age verification, “talk of the town”. Sorry your son didnt get on to the Preds team like he wanted. I guess a few of his buddies did, No need to get upset. Just have him get better. Reason why there are two teams and the " Talk of Baltimore" If Preds move to Elite they will one game and that is assuming 91 stays in Elite, but hey at least they will still be the talk of the town. I don't even know that the top Preds team beats 91... It's largely the same team that barely won AAA last year and subsequently lost to Kelly Post, True Baltimore and Team Money in a summer tournament. This is a completely different situation than the year before where FCA was blowing their AAA teams out and then added a bunch of new kids before moving into Elite.

What teams improved overall? Dust hasn’t settled, still heavy recruiting going on for the top 29’s playing up to come back down. They will be back down here in 2 years or maybe next year for the ones who fall off.

I wouldn’t call it breaking contracts. Depending on who does it, like a coach, is shady. If a coach is poaching for players after the fact then you didn’t do a good job as a coach. Good coaches can envision what they see coming down the pike.

Good coaches can envision what they see coming down the pike. I agree, conversations should be happening before and during tryouts. Clubs try to pressure kids/families to stay or accept an offer right away. It’s nerve racking, but if you’re shopping around, you have to be patient and wait for all offers before making a decision. If your kid is good they will wait.

It all comes down to your sons talent , Above average, he can shop and be patient, The club will take him at anytime.....Average,,,,well you are rolling the dice by not taking the offer. It is as simple as that.

Hahahaha. That's partially true but don't discount all the dads lining up to [Censored] up to the coaches before and after tryouts.

Talked to a VLC parent. All top kids left and went to True Ches. Rest went to True Nova. Don't sleep on True Nova improving and moving to AAA, heard they have solid coaching. VLC blew up cause directors pissed off all the parents. 28/29/30's are all a mess.
