Every kid who enters a certain class (or repeats a grade) does it for a unique set of reasons. In some cases sports is part of the calculus, but in others it is not. For example my son repeated a grade for a set of reasons totally unrelated to lacrosse and now he is playing in 2028 instead of 2027. He is a decent player but nothing special, so nobody knows or cares that he repeated a grade. based on position need, he actually plays a bit less on his 2028 team than he played in 2027. But if he happened to be a dominant player in 2018, then people focused on the holdback issue would assume that he reclassed/held back, because our family wanted him to play against younger kids in lacrosse, which would be a false assumption. And conversely, there are lots of kids who are incredibly good at lacrosse and/or big, who everybody assumes are holdbacks or somehow much older than their peers, but they are not. So this debate has a lot of false assumptions built into it, which is one of the reasons why it is kind of pointless. Everyone should just worry about your own son and not cast aspersion on little Timmy or whatever snide name you call the hypothetical kid who is supposedly standing in the way of your own son's success. You are allowed to “play up” ya know…like still play with the 2027s. But hey why would anyone do that??? news flash, the sport is grade based, not age based. if it bothers you that much, encourage your son to play one of the many age-based sports. the lacrosse world will get by. Or you could not cheat by playing down!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the holdback Dad’s. If you’re not cheating you’re not trying. Whats wrong with playing down ? Nothing ! Whats wrong with getting an advantage other children dont get in youth Sports ? Nothing ! Whats wrong with holding back and being better at competing against others younger ? Nothing All these are within the rules of the fair youth sport of lacrosse..

Too true. "It is so unfair that the holdback is better than my son" will turn into "it is so unfair that these national all star teams come to tournaments and beat my son's team" and then "it is so ridiculous that the coaches' son plays the whole game on attack and my son barely gets to play." Stop whining about things you can't control and invest your energy in what you can - your own son's development into the best player he can be.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the holdback Dad’s. If you’re not cheating you’re not trying. how do you define cheating - somebody playing within the rules who is better than your son? like it or not, there are a fair number of players on all good 2028 teams, including your son's own team, who were born before 9/1/2009. it is legal and it is part of the game. sorry to be the reality broker. Try to accept it so you can enjoy your Thanksgiving just a bit.

Ok holdback Dad sorry to break it to you but when you make your son repeat a grade or refuse to start him in school when he is age eligible you are a cheater! Only exception is for kids with learning disabilities. No matter your reasons your kid should be playing with kids his own age. USLacrosse and all the parents who have to play against your little holdback are making that abundantly clear. They are going to make rules that they assumed wouldn’t be necessary because what nut job holds their kid back to gain a sports advantage??? Well apparently you do so they are going to make that advantage go away and when it does we will see holdback kids struggling to keep up with kids their own age. Long and short of it is that you are what is wrong with youth sports.

When you teach your kids at a young age that the ends justify the means, don’t be surprised when they exhibit those undesirable traits when they are adults.

Are there other box programs around for 28s? I know about crease but was told they are full. My best information from searching (may not be up to date, buyer beware etc) PSL "Premier Series Lacrosse" has a Dec-Jan box league and a Jan-Feb box league. It is informal....kids switching jerseys between games, kids playing down/up to make sure bench strength is adequate to run the games. But it's real box lax with good refs and maybe? some clubs will run teams and there are also 1-2 house teams (Bombers for 27-28s, Admirals for 29-30s), you can sign up by individual player. Warthogs etc is nonexistent at least for the 2028s Crease is full Thunder is expensive and full Some individual clubs are doing box training but not an actual league Some clubs are doing "indoor lacrosse" which is not real box and not real field lacrosse MD Arrows / MD Area Box Academy has gone basically silent since running a few clinics this past summer

The ones who have kids that they held back because they weren’t good enough to play with boys there own age and the ones who weren’t held back but aren’t good enough to play on teams with holdbacks. If your son was really that good of an on age player, you wouldn’t be on here complaining constantly.

Are any HOCO teams playing the Capitol Box Lacrosse Classic Feb 4 and 5 at the Dulles Sportsplex? Or what about the Elite 6’s this Sunday, December 4th? The 6’s event in September drew teams made up of Hawks, FCA, Crabs kids, etc. Hopefully a good turnout this Sunday, weather looks good and the format is a blast for the kids— quick start after goals, 30 sec shot clock, full size cages, etc. Run and Gun a la Paul Westhead for the connoisseurs out there….

At this point the obsession with holdbacks is beyond unhealthy. A lot of you moms and dads are clearly so consumed by it you don’t even enjoy watching your kids play as much as you could.
It should be equitable. It should be aged based. It’s not. It’s probably won’t be for these kids. And literally no one cares.
Try to enjoy the last years of your sons youth ages.

Looking forward to a great time watching the holdbacks do their thing. You kid gonna get stomped on Sunday if he inherited your lack of grit Says the 5’ 8” holdback Daddy.. Nope my kid is spring 2010. Love him being the underdog against older kids. He holds his own, and I’m pretty sure it makes him better. But the best part— not once has he whined or complained about older kids playing 2028. Not once. I like you clowns. Absolute clown show all you whiners. Go play soccer and flop like a fish. Y Nicely done dad. I hope your son continues to hold his own. Loved the soccer flopping reference… as much as I enjoy watching this World Cup stuff, the flopping by players really detracts from the sport. It’s just nuts. They go down like they’ve been shot by the sniper on the grassy knoll, yet they’re back up running full speed 2 minutes later. Pathetic. They call that embellishment in hockey and it’s a 2-minute penalty. If my kid faked it like that on the lacrosse field, he’d be done for the day

Okay, switching topics because the b*tchfest about holdbacks, nonholdbacks, US Lacrosse is beyond boring. Looking forward to a great time watching the holdbacks do their thing. You kid gonna get stomped on Sunday if he inherited your lack of grit The grit you teach your cheating hold back? Mic drop.

My son plays for MadLax. Will somebody attack me please? Only if you are the goalie’s obnoxious dad.

Are any local teams playing in the World Series championship or whatever it’s called?
Need not see holdback drivel please. Im just asking if anyone is playing from the area.
Also don’t really need to hear how terrible the tournament is either.

Also don’t really need to hear how terrible the tournament is either. The 2029 teams from MD would be eligible for 13U
