Great question, the answer is, it depends. If you're son's really good (top 2 or 3 at his position in Hoco Elite or a just a freak athlete) and the HC of the Program doesn't know you, then it could be very worthwhile, ie a coveted admissions slot and if you're at the right school, some aid, to attend and get noticed. If you're son is anyone else, it's a money grab just like the college prospect days are. I do believe putting your athletic kids in highly competitive lacrosse camps and scrimmages helps them determine whether they want to commit more time and effort at getting better. More of a self actualization exercise than prospecting though and clearly not free.

Makes sense. So then where do the coaches find middle schoolers? Do they just take who shows up and have a tryout and roll with it?

I know crabs and FCA have kids they are pointing to BL and CHC. I’d imagine the hawks and stm and Spalding are similar.

But what about everywhere else? I’m relatively new to the area and trying to understand the best way to get kids in front of the coaches.

Get use to ridin the pine @ CHC & BL unless you are a top top player. They will always accept you but rarely if ever play you otherwise. Consider other programs that will allow you to develop on the field. Consider schools that carry 30-35 on varsity roster. You will have a better shot. Good luck.
Ignore CH, LB, BL, STM and if you want a shot at really developing and seeing field.

You could even add McD to the list even though they carry that smaller Varsity roster. There are rising seniors there that never saw time in a competitive MIAA game this past season-and probably won't as seniors. You are only one junior/senior boarding school student transfer away from losing time on field as well at McD. Look @ JC, MSJ, Gilman & Severn. They provide the most opportunities as a freshman to be taught and see the field. Don't make the choice based on who will win the most games. That does not help when your son does not feel like he participated in the game and his uniform is clean.

Correct on all counts. Hopkins is on its way to D3 in the 5-10 year future. Admin doesnt care about lacrosse at all. Kids dont care about its history and Ivies have all the cache that Hop doesnt. It is being keep alive by a bunch of over 60 year olds still spouting how great they will be . .

I hope Hopkins doesn’t eliminate lacrosse, they are the only white kids left on campus.

Getting significant minutes for a perennial top lacrosse contender is not easy. You have to be both athletic and skilled at the sport. The only time I’ve seen truly talented players not see the field is when they are competing against a staff or faculty members kid. That applies at both the scholastic and collegiate ranks. In high school, assuming the talent levels are similar, the order of playing time preference is as follows: staff offspring or relations, recruited players, lacrosse or often multi sport, and last the indigenous population. Sometimes programs will recruit a talented multi sport kid to fill out a roster sport in two or more sports. For schools with boarding capabilities, this young man can come from a nearby state. These are usually 10th graders but can be an 11th grader as well. The best way to prepare your sons for this arduous journey is have them
play and star for the best clubs in their age groups, have a collegiate level physical training regimen and if possible play multiple sports. All of this plus high academic performance.at a well regarded middle school program and top standardized test scores. FYI, it gets even tougher in college.. Good luck!

Telling the guy to ignore CH, BL, McD stm because his son won’t play is the biggest participation trophy lost mindset I’ve ever heard.

Those schools are always top ten in the country - and manage rosters accordingly.

Sheesh. Hit the wall.

Welcome to the “Great Replacement”. But, what the heck, it doesn’t seem to bother any of the normies or lemmings. After all, we still have lacrosse, squash and an occasional glass of good Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ignore these schools unless they pursue you. They recruit who they really want. Don't reach out to them. Otherwise, you'll be practice fodder.

Correct.

Those schools recruit numbers. Period. If they have you, the competition doesn’t.

CH and LB had 55 kids on their game day rosters. Most teams only play 20-22 kids per game.

It’s easy math.

And it’s really much more fun to play.

We are exactly that, and got quite generous offers from the catholic schools he applied to.

He must be better at lax than I thought.

Could not have been said better. If this were to be put into practice the rosters @ McD, CHC, LB, BL, StP, StM would be significantly smaller. There are legacy considerations. There may be some academic considerations, such as more money from one school or course study. Beyond that go talk to the remaining A conference and even the stronger B conference coaches. They would love to talk to you based on this logic. They scratch their heads at all the cleans uniforms that stand on the sidelines at those schools. There are high quality players at the above mentioned schools on the depth chart from 18-30ish that could make a serious impact at other schools. Those schools only play 16-19 players or so on any given competitive game in the MIAA. Those coaches know that they are keeping many of the remaining players from being great and playing at other schools. Rosters at the schools mentioned range from 35-55. Most being over 40 and some over 50. That is 50-65% of the roster that never plays. This is high school ball for crying out loud, it more fun to play than watch if you are in that top 30 on the depth chart. There is greener grass out there-go find it.

Calvert Hall increased the size of the field bench this year at Russo Stadium. Thanks to a generous donation from Kelly Insurance.

Here's the difficulty folks, in 8th grade, very few folks know for certain whether their son will be good enough to be part of the 16-19 players you reference. Yet, when you sign that enrollment contract at an MIAA school you can't transfer without sitting out an entire year of lacrosse. There is no transfer portal in the MIAA. In 8th grade, every kid (and many parents) believes they will make that 16-19 count for the program they love. Your choices are pick a mid tier or even lower tier program to improve your odds of playing or to reach for the stars and try and make it. There is a third response which has worked in the past (see the Fab Five in college) albeit requires some leadership and organizational skills. Get a bunch of good players on your rec and travel teams who like each other to approach a mid level program and enroll as a package. Four or five quality players in one class can change a program from an also ran into a Final Four one.

You can transfer schools in the MIAA without sitting a year, AS LONG as you have not been a "varsity rostered athlete" in ANY sport.

All those Freshman and sophomores at the large schools who did not make any varsity sports can transfer without sitting.

You also don't need to sit a year if you move residency more than 30 miles.

The only place I differ is I think that most parents, if being objective know how good their child is comparative to the other 750+ 8th graders who played in HoCo.

If you start and play a lot in elite, then there is no reason to not try to start and play a lot at the top schools.

If you are a bench player on elite you can try to crack the lineup at BL but you’ll likely be on the bench unless there is a post puberty spurt.

If you start and dominate at AAAA then you have a chance to see the field at CH but it’s not at all a sure thing. You’ll most like start for sure at MSJ and this is a good thing.

Below that parents have to be realistic. If all through youth your son wasn’t one of the 30 best poles in HoCo, he likely won’t be one of the 30 best in the miaa.

There are absolutely exceptions to this both ways. Kids who were studs in middle school become duds and average players become all conference. Those are anomalies however.

A lot of the frustration with kids not playing is because they probably should not have gone to the above schools with high hopes in the first place.

I like your approach. Now we are coming up with great ideas. Unfortunately, those 8th graders and parents are sold a bill of goods. They should interview sophomores & juniors so they are not receiving fake news from coaching staff & admin. This approach keeps players together, allows them to continue to develop together and most important to play more. The bi-product will be a more competitive league, closer games and more turnover in the top 6 playoffs teams every year. If you are on JV as a freshman, you can still transfer. As long as BK and the rest of the Varsity coach's whose teams are mentioned in this thread did not put the ball & chain on you by playing you for 30 seconds in an MIAA game-because they do that. Just the facts. I do believe based on the regular season results of the MIAA "A" this past season, that this is slowly starting. More education of parents & 8th graders should help remove the "Iron Curtain" that has been hiding the truth that is being discussed here. It is a great league with legendary programs that allows many student athletes to move on and play in college. It just needs a little more balance by allowing promising players to see the field.

1-4 players per top 8 teams depending on where you finish and how many “stars” you have. Hype matters as much if not more than performance on the field. If a hyped player scores 4 goals per game but commits 8 TOs per game he is more likely to be selected than the unhyped player who scores 3 goals per game and plays a perfect game otherwise. That’s not unique to our Conference, that’s life.

How does the selection process work? Curious? Coaches lobbying for players I’m assuming?

Who has the list of players?

Talked to a coach of one of these big schools when my son was looking last year. They have 140+ kids in the program.
Already knowing the answer, I asked him how many freshman were currently in the program.
He responded that there were 25 kids on the freshman team.
Not what I was asking. He conveniently forgot to mention the additional 15 freshmen on JV, and 4-5 on varsity.
But that team did have 12 seniors.
So they likely started with 40-45 freshman hopefuls.
The reality is that 3 out of every 4 freshmen at these big schools, won't be rostered by senior year.

Your kids only have 4 years of high school. Tell them to go where they can play. It's more fun to play.

Trust me.

Saw the 3 McDonogh first team.

I’d say the Baltimore players will dominate the list.

Best in the state at playing 4-corners stall-ball.

Really need college rules when public play private. Privates should host to make it happen or not agree to play. Other rules come into play besides shot clock.

Play by whatever rules you want. 6 championships in a row is impressive. I have no dog in that fight but great job! You guys are doing something right at Severna Park. Congratulations & enjoy the celebration you deserve it. And no before you reply I’m not the goalies dad. Cheers SP!

It’s a tale as old as time.

The best fogo was the Severn kid. And the best goalies were the MSJ and JC kids.

But the awards will mesh with the IL recruiting lists.

Gilman goalie deserves first team. Had to cover for the worst defensive in the league, all JV level talent. Plus one defender quits on the team and fakes a season ending injury in order to be healthy for summer league.
The goalie had to deal with all this BS and still was amazing !!

Have not seen full list of all MIAA Player of year will be interesting I don’t think there was a clear cut winner. Probably goes to player in championship. CH didn’t have a true star and BL attackamn DP is not a complete player and that turnover he threw out of bounds was so very bad a POY candidate doesn’t do that’ and he has been a no show in big games St Mary’s or MCD player will win

Some like to downgrade accomplishments when they have none. MIAA bottom feeders brag about their conference. Great accomplishment to play in a conference you will never win or be competitive in.
