While I would never encourage "going after" a kid on the other team for taking a behind the back shot, if it was a 10 - 0 game and the kid did it, I wouldn't be upset seeing a D putting him on his butt, not to hurt him but to let him know it wasn't appreciated, when this happens as a continuation of a play it is a lot more acceptable then when it is per-meditated and coached.
Not all behind the back shots are the same and many are not hot dog but the
correct shot.

True. but the need for a behind the back is rare. So when you see a kid try to do it multiple times in the same game then you know what its really about

As a matter of fact,I have seen more goals missed because player forsook an easy shot to try and make behind the back one

They don't play the 2020 Team 91 Orange Crush team. As a matter of fact they won't even go to tournaments that theOrange Crush team is competing in

Because then they wouldn't be able to put CHAMPIONS on their web site to attract more parents of more 10 year olds to pay MORE money because theonly way little Johnny is going to Hopkins is if he plays travel alcrosse all year round.

This is the garbage these teams are peddling, and way too many people are buying into it.

Schedules are posted on the Internet. Crush can easily enter any of the tournaments that the Express are in. However, that may be difficult for them because their top players are juggling playing on two teams and 91 Crush would not schedule a tournament without them. Also, last time I looked, Team 91 post every tournament Championship on their website. Get a life buddy.

91 also runs a lot of tournaments using different names and we've seen some monkey business surrounding them. All the 91 people hang their hat on is the Orange Crush. Yes, they are the best 2020 team around. Big deal. Express older teams are better than the 91 teams. All teams proudly display tournament winners. It helps bring in revenue for tryouts.

my son was lucky enough to have been invited to a University this weekend and meet with the coaching staff - below are a few of the questions he was NOT asked.

What summer team did you play for in 5th grade?
What was their record?
did they play (91/Express/fl$/DD's) in any tournaments?
how did they do?
Was he on the best 5th grade team?

They did ask about his SAT's

just sayin'

I hear what you are saying but if you could please answer honestly.
Did he play on a travel team in 5th grade?
Do you think that experience helped get him that invite?
What do you think was more of a catalyst on the invite his HS or his travel play?

this thread is about LI Express and our teams though i don't have a child in that grad year. Why are you even dignifying the Crush commenter with a response. If that will make them sleep better at night, fine so be it.

Congrats to you. All club teams put their championship teams on their website. Most of them you can find their schedules and vice versa

What does it all mean in the end. Not a damn thing. Some will stay with lax and some will quit. Some new kids will pick up the game for the first time and pass others by. What is happening at 2022, 2021, 2020 etc is so insignificant in the end. Its great for the kids when then win to feel about themselves i think we all can acknowledge that but its not the be all end all.

A wise man once said it is great to win the game, even greater to play the game, but the greatest of all is to love the game. That is what it is supposed to be about at these ages.

The 2020 Express Terps are a great team by anyone's standards. They haven't beat Team 91 Crush yet, it's the only team in their age group that they've lost to. The 2020 Express Terps play equal playing time and have won numerous times without some of their stronger players - it's truly a balanced team that wins no matter who shows up. So when you sum it all up, the 2020 Terps are arguably the #2 team in their age group nationally, with the #1 coaching staff, #1 group of parents who all get along and really enjoy spending time together, and a great set of kids that are all friends off the field. There's no parent drama, no infighting, and balanced scoring and playing time(goals and assists from all who step on the field).

If you get the opportunity, take a look at Quint's column on InsdeLacrosse.com Speaks of how truly messed up the club youth culture is. Orange Crush or Express or any other "elite" team

He has played travel lacrosse since second grade, he has played on many teams, we never tried out for the "top" teams and winning a tournament was never a priority, although winning is a lot of fun. His HS coach has been the biggest part of his recruiting

That's great but unfortunately there are a ton of High school coaches that don't do anything to help their players.

Cant speak for all of the teams, but the practices and work at our express 2018 team are all about fundementals. Coaches do a great job and our experience has been very positive. never saw MC or other coaches wearing flip flops or lacking for energy.

certainly not the case with many other teams I am sure, but the article also doesnt call out the program.

Great article, but there are a few things in the article I disagree with. He was clearly commenting on one practice for one club team that he happened to be watching. That doesnt mean there arent club teams out there that have outstanding coaches and that generally care about their kids. Although he makes several valid points throughout the article and while it is definitely thought provoking, there are several statements he makes that are silly. To say a kid would be better off playing wall ball is simply ridiculous. The club experience can be a great experience if you are on the right team with the right coaches. Are there club teams out there that are a straight money grab? Absolutely! My son is a 2017 player and is on a very good 2017 team and we have played some absolutely horrific club teams which makes you wonder and validates some of the points that Quint was making. The tone of the article was how out of control the club lacrosse scene has become, which I do somewhat agree with. However, making blanket statements without all the facts is irresponsible on his part. Not every kid can attend Boys Latin or Gilman, so for some club lacrosse is a great outlet and a way to get on track for college lacrosse. Its all about the right situation for you child, its up to the parents to make sure you put your child in the right situation to help him succeed. There are good and bad lacrosse clubs out there just like everything else. Quint has to be careful with that broad brush he paints with.

So true. These big clubs have multi-squad practices too. Absolute chaos, few touches, no instruction.

An hour spent at the wall is much better. Supplement that by getting a bucket of balls and passing to your son to shoot them all into an empty net, lefty and righty. Repeat 10 times from different positions/angles. Do a few shuttle runs, and focus on footwork. Then do the same drills with a stick and pass back and forth while he does it. This takes all of an hour, and your son gets 100x the touches he'll ever get at a club practice. Then go get pizza and congratulate yourselves for not buying into the nonsense. And for dad, you've burned the calories to enjoy that extra slice.

Club lax can be worth it, but if you paid more than $800 for four tournaments you need to read and then re-read that article. Avoid teams with tryout fees more than $30 or $40, especially after 5th grade (it's all a money grab). And if you're on a "big name" club and not on their A team (and/or not getting at least half the game playing time), then you are just subsidizing someone else's son's lax experience.

Not very strong.

Whenever a boys club adds on girls teams, they are basically the red-headed stepchild.

Just added revenue for the club.

You are much better off with a girls club.

WHile wall ball is no doubt a key factor in getting better a good travel team is key as well. To be on a team where kids can catch and throw, talented kids on D becasue they want to be there, not stuck there becasue they stink gives a kid the opportunuty to learn how to play lacrosse the right way. So often in lacrossse its not about what you do when you have the ball, its about what you do when you dont. These team cocnepts cant be learned on a wall. Also a good coach will help with fundemabtal stick work , dodging and shooting , footwork and checking . Do your homework, ask a lot of questions and trurt your own eyes.

Express girls (2015)won their first tournament if you go to the girls website.
They also beat elevate 11-2 at the national draw.
They added a few new players that left for Elevate, several girls from Ward Melville and a Shoreham Goalie.
I am thinking about moving my daughter there as I live close and a friends daughter from St . Anthony's is quite happy there for the past few years with the coaches.

Elevate is a huge step down from the other three (from a talent perspective), as it is a very new program.

Elevate's 2017 team just won National Draw. Their 2019 team won Lax By The Sea. Not bad for a new program.

As you look for a club for your daughter go to a practice in season and watch what is taking place. Are the coaches teaching or are they just standing on the sidelines while the girls are doing drills. My daughter and I recently attended a practice Express had in Commmack and we were pleased to find coaches who were hands on and giving great instructions to their players the entire practice. As with any club every team has different coaches we were looking at 2017 team's practice and were impressed.

I noticed an express girls team practice while waiting for a summer league game at Commack as well. Those practices were run very well. fast paced not sure if i saw a ball touch the ground. The practice was run so well in fact that many of my girls were stating they would rather join Express than TG or YJ if that is how the practices are run.

Great move to practice at a spot where the young girls play summer ball.

Nice try to plug the Express program. The Directors care about one thing and one thing only - The BOYS. Girls are an afterthought. The LIE girls have not ever won a major tournament. The program used to be important if you were thinking of sending your daughter to St. Anthony's - now it does not matter.

And for those of you that are familiar with the travel scene be it boys or girls; it is not always about the organization but the team... the coach, the players, and yes even the parents. One team on any certain organization may not be, act or get the same attention benefits as another team in the same organization (even same grad year with in the organization).

Remember it isn't always fair, it doesn't have to be, it is a business. It is travel ball, know what you're getting into and why you're getting into it. Are you playing to get better and to raise your game, are you playing so you can play against the best, are you playing so you can play with the best. Once you know what you are doing and why, you can honestly find a great spot to play (male or female).

Express to girls top teams are the equivalent talent wise as a 2nd , 3rd level YJ team ,a little below TG black.
