As the summer club season ends, numerous rumors regarding dishonest rostering continue to swirl. Kids playing down an age group regardless of rules, re-classing to a lower grade prior to a major tournament, using guest players both of age and over age, kids playing on two teams in the same tournament, using kids on another team once their team is eliminated from tournament play (again, playing in same tournament for 2 different teams), sharing kids from different club branches (NJ & NY) as team advances through a tournament. I am sure there are many other situations. While the actions are inherently unfair for both the competition as well as players displaced by such actions, many are afraid to speak up as the clubs hold significant leverage in future roster spots and playing time. Put these clubs/coaches on notice that their reputations will be on the line regarding these unfair tactics. Please list the club and age groups you have seen impacted by these tactics, please no player names. Hopefully a public forum will provide a disincentive to cheat by shaming these clubs/coaches into doing the right thing and hopefully this thread will not disappear.

I agree with this. Most tournaments do not require kids to play exclusively on one team, and do not enforce age or grade. Clubs do what they need to do to win so they can promote their brand. My son was a stud in HS and was constantly getting recruited to play as a guest player on different teams for no cost. It’s what happens. The best thing you can do is make sure your kid works hard and is a kid the coaches want on the field in close games, then you don’t have to worry. Lacrosse is not an honest sport. It is a self serving money grab. If your kid is a good enough player, he/she will be recruited to a better academic school than they would have been able to get into without lacrosse, then you are winner!

These responses are pretty enlightening: 1) wait till 11th grade, that is when the cheating stops or does not matter; 2) I know better; 3) your kids stinks and you are salty. Some people know the violators. They have decided a win in 5th grade is more important than their reputations. This thread is appreciated because it puts out front a real issue in the game and lets these clubs/coaches know that despite what they want to think, the community knows, and their reputations are on the line. I get it, to a few people on this board, this slippery activity is OK. I think this reflects on you and I suspect and hope you are in the far minority, but with a loud voice.

Unfortunately youth lacrosse is permeated with daddy coach / former players that use every single advantage possible to get their kid into any advantageous position possible (hold backs, start early, coach town team, move their kids to teams where friends coach, have their kids play on several teams, you don't like your kids standing on a team.... just create a new team). Worst part about youth lacrosse is the parents. No kid is coming home after school saying... "Mom, can i repeat 8th grade? I will look like a stud against kids a year younger"

I do not like those aspects as well, but I am not going to tell someone what is best for their own kid. The rules are loose (maybe purposefully) and so long as you do not violate, what are you going to do? What irks me is pre-agreed rules are intentionally violated, like playing a kid below his grade group. I cannot think of another youth sport in the US where rostering age rules are so loose and maybe more importantly, violated, without repercussion.

My kid doesn't play AAU basketball but I hear thats pretty bad. For those of you who have kids playing AAU and LAX, which is worst? I find it hard to believe that anything is more slimy then youth lacrosse. Love the idea of calling out the Bad People on the forum.

You really do sound like a bitter parent that always sees glass half empty and makes excuses when things don’t go their way. Nothing positive here about dad coaches passion for the game and desire to share that game, sacrificing countless hours to help his kid and his kid’s friends develop and make great memories. Instead you insult the very people likely most responsible for introducing your kid to this great game. Have a little respect or try putting yourself in their shoes to gain perspective. As for dad’s kid, it’s a 100% natural development process for some kids to outgrow or add additional programs to challenge themselves at a higher level. For others, or maybe in your case, a kid has reached their full potential and or you or your kid doesn't have the connections or additional time to devote to keep pace in your particular situation. In any of these cases, great life lessons to help our kids through now before they’re on their own. And if it’s really a very unfair situation, there’s a life lesson there too. But please, don’t blame your situation on dad coaches who are devoting their time and energy to help their kid and others kids grow in a game they love and want to share. That’s just crazy.

Ok dad coach. We all know the only reason you coach is to get free club for your son and promote him above others who are better. The majority of kids who have a dad coach are exposed come recruiting time because even with all of “daddy’s” help you can’t buy talent

Listen it’s tryout season and anything you don’t like, you have consumer choice. But please when your son makes a team don’t ask on here about the team. Call the director and ask your questions. If you don’t get a response, that’s a good indication as well. And also ask, prior to trying out who is coaching the team. And ask to speak with the. As well.

Dad, not a Dad, It is your choice to join that team. Move your daddy coach discussion to another thread. What is bs is any coach (dad/non dad) that cheats by packing a roster with ineligible kids. It happened at NLF. This is about exposing coaches and clubs that cheat to win.

My daughter just graduated and playing in college and that would be the advise would give to another parent.

What if the kid that jumped in front of your kid during tournament play was age ineligible? Should everyone ignore and just practice harder? Or do you call a cheat a cheat to clean up the mess.

Lax should do what soccer and baseball have done going by birth year and not graduation year. That they don't is condoned cheating.

The clubs own and run the tournaments - exception being the WSYL. While for some reason the very club directors that see and understand the recruiting landscape are the same people moving 12 and 13 year olds around to try to win some meaningless championship. Try not to spend too much worrying about the rules and winning and cheating - focus on your son having a good time and hopefully getting better at lacrosse.

Should an 8th grader be permitted to play in a 6th grade game? Update on responses:
1) you are a glass half empty guy, move along 2) forget the cheating, it will not matter in 11th grade. 3) Your kid stinks
Well, they are responses. Anything to avoid the core issue of age grade cheating by the clubs. You are right I am a donk, my kid stinks, I am salty, I need to get a hobby, all the other stuff. Just one question. Should an 8th grader be permitted to play in a 6th grade game?

The problem is there is not a single rule written that states an 8th grader can not play in a 6th grade game. Yes its grade based but no one ever wrote rules stating that this could not happen. When you read the rules for each tournament, they talk about time of each half, what happens in case of a tie, etc... nothing ever states that an 8th grader or any older grade player can not play down a grade or two or three.

But I am certainly not complaining it - I am just doing it.

I don’t agree if you’re sons in 8th grade he should play 8th grade ball what does he learn coming down to 6th grade ?? It’s sad it mostly was seeing from Maryland or Massachusetts but looks like Long Island is starting as well..

Well another “be quite, move along guy.” When a guy picks your pocket you do not just say oh well i will just move along. Spoken like a cheater. There are rules. They are not followed. I will give you the clubs control the rules which some do not follow and more importantly do not enforce Where can we find the rules? I have never seen any rules that discuss player eligibility. And no, I am not a cheater. I am just watching older kids push my son out and recognize there is not much I can do about it at 13. When the kids get to high school it will mostly even out until then make sure your son has fun and try to keep him engaged. There is something you can do about it. Take your money elsewhere. Be a man of action versus complaining on an anonymous forum. Of course I am moving my son to a different program (I am a "man of action" after all). He is getting pushed out by older kids. But I am certainly not complaining it - I am just doing it. I guess you thought you would get some validation on BOTC. Stop looking for it and just do it. Can't believe adult males still need to get a hug for following their convictions. Kind of ridiculous.

Your initial post was much wider scope than what you have here now. Initial post aside, I agree that if a tournament is age or grade based, this rule shouldn’t be violated.

Dad, not a Dad, It is your choice to join that team. Move your daddy coach discussion to another thread. What is bs is any coach (dad/non dad) that cheats by packing a roster with ineligible kids. It happened at NLF. This is about exposing coaches and clubs that cheat to win. It is not going to change. Stop being so concerned about winning. For on age kids, the next few years will be rocky. Stay the course and it will even out eventually. Frustrating? Yes. End of the world? No.

The "supposed to be fun" I agree with. Coaches playing a kid with a beard in a 5th grade game, sorry not so much. You can rationalize all you want: 1) it does not matter; 2) you are a hammerhead; 3) you are a donk; blah blah blah. All just a dodge. Just do not cheat and you will not have hammerheads like me calling you out on it, which is what I suspect is your real problem.

Agree, things will not change if left up to the clubs. It is in the interest of those that cheat and win to continue to cheat and win, especially if there is no ramification on cheating. What is shocking is that there are clubs and coaches that risk their reputations to win a youth lacrosse game/tournament. At end of the day, nobody is living or dying based on this cheating, but it is so easy to clean up and the right thing to do, it just needs to be done. A public forum to out the cheaters should be more than enough to at least scare a few of the cheaters into walking a straighter line, for fear of being outed and ruining their reputations..

Originally you were complaining saying out of state kids from the same program but a different team came or older kids from your same program but older teams were coming and pushing your kid out. Now are you just complaining because your kid is worse than the other players on the team?

I think you are the one confused. Some of these comments were mine and some were not. Overall, pretty simple concept. do not cheat or else catch well deserved flak.

This problem is not new. This has been going on for years. Every year the number of clubs grows. Clubs add 2nd and 3rd teams. Rosters are growing to ridiculous numbers. When my oldest son started playing club there were a fraction of the teams most clubs didn’t have 2 teams in each age group. Rosters were capped at 20. I’m just happy my youngest is almost done. I do not place all the blame on the club owners. The parents are to blame also. We keep forking over the cash so our kids can get a partial scholarship. We are the insane ones. We have this dream that lacrosse will get our kids into a better school that they would not be able to get into with out playing so parents do everything they can to give their kid an upper hand. I’ve had four kids go through the clubs (3 boys and 1 girl) from my experience very few kids ended up In better schools. Most not all would have been accepted into the school that they choose. Believe me from experience just about every kid on Norte Dame, Duke, VA, Hopkins. Would have been able to get in to those schools without lacrosse. Does it make it easier for them. Sure did. But they would have made it anyway.

Believe me from experience just about every kid on Norte Dame, Duke, VA, Hopkins. Would have been able to get in to those schools without lacrosse. Does it make it easier for them. Sure did. But they would have made it anyway. For the kids that are at NLF and similar, yes, they and their parents are in it for scholarship money and/or admission to better schools. But this is really a small fraction of the teams/events making up summer travel lacrosse. There are many more clubs/teams (and lower teams at the very few power clubs) playing at other events, which are far more numerous. All of these kids are playing because: 1) it is fun; 2) many of their friends do it, so a bit of FOMO; 3) parents want them occupied for the summer and don't want to have to pay for a million vacations/shore houses; 4) it is necessary to keep up with the Jones' in order to be good enough to play Varsity at their mediocre, but perfectly fine, HS program. For this latter group, which again is the large majority of kids playing, the cheating that you speak of is close to non-existent. You don't see the bloated rosters. All kids get plenty of playing time. No one uses guest players. Very few if any holdbacks (and those that exist are non-lacrosse related). Everyone is at the correct grade. Yes, the teams aren't as good as the NLF teams, and the top players here are only going D-3 (absent a few D1s here and there), but this is where your kid can go to in a second if the cheating and nonsense you speak of (the original poster I am referring to) is too much to bear - of which I don't condone by the way. The top brackets at these events (or sometimes just the top "schedule" at a smaller event) have teams that are not far from many of the lower half NLF teams, and unless your kid is a stud at NLF he won't stand out in a "he is too good for this" way.

Lax should do what soccer and baseball have done going by birth year and not graduation year. That they don't is condoned cheating. USA Hockey goes by birth year as well.

No offense but you're obviously misinformed. Kids are allowed to play in their graduation year . If a kid is a holdback for whatever reason and there are legit reasons besides sports then he's allowed to play down in his graduation year . Unless uslacrosse changes the rules to age bases just like every other sport that is not being dishonest or cheating it's actually playing by the rules . And while I agree that it's crazy for people to be held back then reclass for any sport including lacrosse it is still without the rules . Needs to go age based. People have been saying that for years

What do you do when those rules are broken, not a reclass, but outright broken. A non-reclassed 8th grader playing in a 7th grade game.

When a 2025 plays for a 2026 team because they “plan on reclassing” is not the same as a kid who actually reclassed. And most if not all tournaments specify that players can only play on one team during the tournament. These examples happen all the time because their is no way to enforce.

If your player plays on one team on age/grade and is Invited to play another team with in the organization What is wrong with that? If the player is going to play against better competition what’s wrong with that?

Basically building an all star team. I guess if other teams had the same opportunity to do it, fine. But if you were one of the displaced players, probably not very happy. Playing down, cheating.

People have been saying that for years Unfortunately, you are either misinformed or intentionally putting your head in the sand. Grade based is the rule. What do you do when those rules are broken, not a reclass, but outright broken. A non-reclassed 8th grader playing in a 7th grade game.

Playing down, cheating. stinks to get displaced, but it’s not cheating if playing up. I’d go as far to say that any kid can play in any tournament, for any organization or multiple organizations, as long as the player is not playing for two competing teams in the same bracket and following age/grade rules of tournament or otherwise specified by the tournament. But typically it’s never specified otherwise. Again, stinks to get displaced but this is not cheating.

I'm used to the holdbacks, but if teams are dropping players down for the summer before they actually reclass that that seems like cheating to me. Lacrosse year starts after tryouts. If you player from Sept through June on a 2025, dropping down to a 2026 for the summer is cheating. Dropping down in September while repeating 8th grade is not.

If Club Lacrosse would simply adopt rules as USSoccer/USAHockey/USBaseball (Hard age driven) - These issues would never occur. It’s sad that this has never been really addressed. Can’t imagine how many children have been injured by a kid 2-3 years older ....playing in the same ‘Grade Driven’ division. In all intensive purposes ....it’s cheating. But it really isn’t if there are no rules stating otherwise. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

It is frustrating competing against the reclass, holdbacks and cheaters. I will say that I truly believe my guy got a lot better playing against older players and always up against the best. He is playing high lever d1 and great academic school. Would he have done better if holdbacks did not take up college spots? Probably. But he would not have been as good of a player. With the holdbacks taking top spots it works out for some. When it does not work it is a disaster for the holdback in many ways.

Wrong again. If the player is a 2026 grad year they can play 2024, 2025, 2026 all year long, even in the same tournament if it is approved by the TD, as long as they do not play 2027. The whiner, complainer above is funny and seems unstable.

Please name the club where this happened. Express 😎 When are where did this happen?

They all will be in HS together and play in college together. Whether the kid plays down in July or Sept it is what it is and it isn't going to change. I don't like holdbacks but judging by the top 15 2022 Boys holding your kids back WORKS. Couple of the kids were 2 years older than a "normal" 2022. IL celebrates it, why wouldn't parents do it?

What happened to developing players, relationships and loyalty? If you want to add to your roster, wait until next season. Why do it when you have a team that practices together and works together as a unit? Call me old school but there is such a thing as comraderie-bringing in players mid season just messes with your kids!

You will get one litigious parent whose 11 year old son gets a serious head injury from a 13-14 year old and their lawyer will find a way that the lax tournament directors and US lax were negligent in allowing. and older kids to compete in an advertised 2028 group. I wouldn't be that person but you know the world we live in and it could happen. And they don't even need to win the lawsuit but thi gs would change quickly. In courts look at reasoable and customary things that similar organizations do and if you are an outlier you are exposed legally. Will it ever happen?? Maybe not but why risk it?

Agreed, just pick one of the high school classes, like 2023, and compare the threads on this forum from 3-4 years ago with the discussions today. The 2023 boys forum is almost inactive these days, but was blowing up with the LI vs. MD holdback/reclass discussions a few years ago...and the reason why...because the 2023s started playing high school lacrosse with juniors and seniors

You are an odd duck whoever you are. This is supposed to be fun. Does not seem like are having much fun unless acting like a hammerhead is fun for you. Yeah OP likes cancel culture for sure.

Blame the colleges. Those coaches would rather have a freshman turning 20 than kids on age.
It trickles down from there.
Until players can start to earn significant money playing professionally- this isn’t ever going age based.

Here is the recap of the objectors: you are a donk; your kid stinks; you are jealous of my kid; you are a hammerhead, no fun, get a hobby; nothing to see here, move along; it does not matter, wait till 11th grade; cancel culture, witch hunter.
The personal attacks, who cares, just shows weak mind. To those that say the cheating does not matter, exactly, if the win is not so important why not pull a player up versus cheating and playing someone down? And isn’t if funny how, magically, this player is usually a stud FOGO, goalie or midfielder? Certain clubs, coaches and parents value the win, even if cheating is required. Actually it is kind of funny that those pointing out the cheating are labeled as crybabies, wanting the win so badly, by cheaters who are willing to cheat to win.
A few have been called out, I am sure there are many more. Bottom line, this is not cancel culture, this is sunlight. If the coaches and clubs can hide in the shadows and cheat, some of those with flexible morals will cheat. Many parents will understandably stay quiet and not call it out, so as not to rock the boat with the club and coaches that hold so much power. To those who say otherwise, when you offer your opinion on the sideline, probably loudly and everyone is just nodding their head, do not mistake it for agreement. Life is too short, most do not want to get in an argument. Everyone knows cheating is inherently wrong. Not that you care, but when you make such ridiculous arguments you have put a big label on your forehead that says “questionable character.” Bottom line, the rules are loose and the people that should enforce even these loose rules are not. You have a fox in the hen house. In the end, it needs to be fixed. Let the sunlight be the disinfectant. These clubs and coaches have reputations to protect, and if they are willing to cheat even on the loose rules to win a youth lacrosse game, they should be called out. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.

Still don't see anybody posting name of teams with age groups who are "cheating". Until you do that stop whining. Express North 2026 at NLF. Did you report them to NLF? Bingo! But I imagine walking up to the Tournament tent, day of games, and asking to confirm the grade of a current player would be a tough call. We play hockey also, parents have and do request it. But parents also complain that their kid born in November doesn't get a chance with the kid born in February playing on the team. Puberty at this age determines everything.

He's a 2027 graduation year and fyi is now on the team permanently with his dad as a coach . So I guess you and your disgusting rage parents will cry all year next year when you lose again . Excuses excuses . And keep saying that the dad admitted it to you and we will find out who you are and and you can ask him face to face . You're a brainless cry baby . Oh and by the way you're still talking about the same kid that your head coach begged to come play for rage . So stop embarrassing yourself and keep lying about the kid and his father and you will get hurt.

Still don't see anybody posting name of teams with age groups who are "cheating". Until you do that stop whining. Express North 2026 at NLF. Did you report them to NLF? 2027 express a team nlf had a 14 year old come play for just that tourney his dad was on the sidelines and admitted it 🤔 Why don't you identity yourself so we can talk about your lies face to face ? Disgusting piece of trash Are you upset that you got caught out there I’d be embarrassed as well it’s funny keep denying it but the kids father alone with a handful of your parents agreed.. tsk tsk it’s ok guys take a deep breath it was proven so why are you still getting upset enjoy your dad runned team 😂😂😂😂😂

You get an A+ for virtue signalling. You get a D minus as a lost.

Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time. You get an A+ for virtue signalling. You get a D minus as a lost. Virtual signaling is done by someone that wants personal recognition by a certain population. As an anonymous message board, that hardly seems to be the case. Well, I will admit, I do enjoy watching others squirm and name call trying to justify blatant cheating. And I am not talking about reclass or daddy coaches. I am mostly talking about use of illegal older players and double rostering in same tournament. What shocks me is how careless those in charge can act. Many of the people involved have prominent high school and college coaching positions. Someone talked about lawsuits, maybe a threat, though to me it seems remote. But can you imagine a local online paper, a HS or college student online blog or a local sports blogger starting to ask questions? How about a school board or college board of trustees catches wind? Do you ever see how crazy it can get? Maybe these guys feel invincible, but there is a very large population out there that could care less about who wins a youth lacrosse game, but would be very happy to take one of these guys down to, as you say, virtue signal. They have done it to themselves. They have placed their heads on the chopping block and now it is just a matter of time to see if they straiten it out before someone comes and takes a swing.

Curious if the original poster has done anything “real” to address his problem with “honesty”. Is his action coming onto an anonymous site to complain? Has he emailed coaches? Has he spoken to them at tournaments? What real action has he taken? Anonymous complaining on a site no coach or lacrosse official reads. Who said it was a “he” that initiated this thread? I am not convinced. I was thinking the same thing.....

And now you have insulted them by implying somehow it is likely to be a women making these comments, as they do not understand the manly sport of lacrosse. It is cheating, period. Every human being knows it. These moms know cheating, they know the club coaches, they know the athletic directors in town, they know PTA board members and they are smart and would be more than willing to tell the music teacher that sits on the school board about the cheating. The comments from many in this lacrosse forum bubble are quite frankly inane.

Would love to play poker with you! Wrong again. If the player is a 2026 grad year they can play 2024, 2025, 2026 all year long, even in the same tournament if it is approved by the TD, as long as they do not play 2027. The whiner, complainer above is funny and seems unstable. Can you read? They said a 2025 player dropping DOWN mid season to play 2026. You are talking about playing up.

Wait if school is over for an 8th grader and he holds back, right now he is a rising 8th grader. Correct? He is not a 9th ie he has officially reclassed at the end of school.

[quote=Anonymous][quote=Anonymous] For this latter group, which again is the large majority of kids playing, the cheating that you speak of is close to non-existent. You don't see the bloated rosters. All kids get plenty of playing time. No one uses guest players. Very few if any holdbacks (and those that exist are non-lacrosse related). Everyone is at the correct grade. . I agree with everything you wrote with the exception of the pre-k holdbacks. Even in small non NLF clubs half the rosters consist of pre-k hold backs (with the exception of the NY kids ) This has nothing to do with lacrosse. Pre-K is just common practice outside of the northern states. Kids graduate HS at 19 instead of 18. Re-classers start college at 20.

It's actually quite simple ....make lacrosse ON AGE just like soccer . U13, U12 etc......until then there will always be hold backs and reclassing etc....what these money hungry clubs forget is it's not safe for kids to be playing other kids who are older and could have hit puberty already . But in the end money is king not safety . And we all fall in line like sheep for this stuff while the club owners line their pockets and don't care about the kids one bit

How about 91, and express both using 31 kids in a 32 division at blatant. Ex top programs showing true colors. That’s absolutely pathetic.

Who has abused reclass and who has cheated this year? Pretty much all the private school kids. They do because they can. Reckless disregard for anyone other than themselves. I love when it backfires. Unfortunately (actually, fortunately) being older doesn’t make you better when others catch up. Fun to watch.

Maybe the hope for a level playing field? Massive Hold backs and cheaters will be on display at NLF. Clubs and coaches should be called out . Parents think they are great, everyone else knows it is bs. Is this any better than the Lia Thomas situation?

The holdback thing amazes me in this sport and it seems like a very simple fix that every other sport has already incorporated. All is lacrosse would have to do is enforce a rule it already has of age instead of graduating year in club. Yea there will be holdbacks for high school still but it would be a disadvantage to do it for club which is where the kids get recruited out of. And for those of you who think, well it all evens out when they are older, you are seriously underestimating the effect of older kids making better teams and getting better coaching when they are younger. Great study of this effect in youth/minor league hockey where 80+% of the kids who made the minors were born in Jan/Feb vs any other month of the year. The bigger kids make the better teams and get better coaching early on. US lacrosse needs to have the guts to stand up and enforce the rule that every other sport already has

One of the sad parts of all of this is the pressure put on these kids by their parents. The kids buys into it all because their scheming parents tells them that it’s a way to gain an edge, so they do as directed. What happens at the next level can be devastating to many of these heldback kids when they are not the superstar everyone expected. They will be rooted against. I will always root against the holdback, and for the kid that did things the right way.

Not holding back as much on island has paid off. How did Duke do last year? Li has still increased last few years the percentage ok kids going in to play college. Kids are better to not hold back and Redshirt 1st year You practice for 8-9 moths at a college level. Holding back during your younger years is a joke. So u can be a top recruit. Look at top 50 busts last few years, more than 10 year ago.

I know it's splitting hairs since the gap between March and June is equivalent to the gap between June and September, but I find that slightly more palatable since the March birthday is closer to the average on-age kid in the grade above than to the average on-age kid in the grade below.

I hear the top recruit in the country is like a double holdback Nope. He re-classed before high school to the 23 class and is a March birthday but still played mostly with the 22 class. he'll be 19 when he starts college. My kid isn't even 19 yet and he's starting his sophomore year in college.

Pretty sure he’s talking about the top ‘22 recruit going to Cuse The 22 recruit is a hold back. He held back starting kindergarten. He should be a 21. He played up a year his entire youth with the 20’s Funny thing is he would have been the top recruit in the 21 class. He didn’t need to hold back Spallina is a hold back, but a summer hold back. I know it's splitting hairs since the gap between March and June is equivalent to the gap between June and September, but I find that slightly more palatable since the March birthday is closer to the average on-age kid in the grade above than to the average on-age kid in the grade below. So, a summer holdback is okay, but others are not? Please stop.

Easiest fix is if US lacrosse just enforced their current rules for club lacrosse and promoted it to the tournaments(don’t offer insurance for those that don’t). Hard deadline of sept 1 and that’s it. There will still be holdbacks for high school ball but it would be less prevalent as most recruiting happens from club and not high school. Simple and done
