The Division I Council voted on Wednesday to extend the ongoing NCAA recruiting dead period through Sept. 30; but at this point, it appears that the men's and women's lacrosse contact period will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 1 as initially scheduled.
The NCAA's summary of the DI Council meeting, posted Wednesday night, was mostly about student-athlete well-being, fall championships and emergency legislation to implement an injunction issued by a U.S. District judge. The extent to which any conversation around lacrosse's recruiting calendar occurred is unclear; this is the portion of the summary that outlined the extended dead period:
The Council took feedback from coaching associations in making its decision, and most coaching groups recommended the extension through at least Sept. 30. The full Council will consider the dead period again in September.
No in-person recruiting or evaluations can occur in the dead period.
As previously reported, the IWLCA voted in favor of postponing the Sept. 1 contact date and formally proposed moving the contact date to July 1, 2021 for the Class of 2022. The IMLCA held a similar vote among its members, but a majority voted to maintain the Sept. 1 contact date.
One source told IL that the IWLCA's proposal was not considered as part of Wednesday's meeting. Another source tells IL that the proposal could still be considered at some point prior to Sept. 1.
On Monday, Aug. 3, the IWLCA hosted a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the ongoing factors impacting the current recruiting arena.
The NCAA dead period, which includes all DI sports, precludes all in-person recruiting. The ongoing dead period has been in effect since shortly after the NCAA canceled the remainder of its winter championships and all of its spring sports in March.
