Katherine Zisis, Nassau girls lax Players of the Week

Monday May 6, 2013 2:57 PM By Stephen Haynes

Photo credit: Steve Pfost | Roslyn's Katherine Zisis (May 4, 2013)

As always, email me or @StephenHaynes4. Now, let's get right to it.

Katherine Zisis, Roslyn: In one of the more touching sports-related scenes you’ll see, Zisis, a senior with pulmonary stenosis and development disability, scored a goal in her first varsity appearance on Saturday. Zisis has been the Bulldogs’ manager for four years and, in Roslyn’s last home game this season, she was cleared to play. She entered the game at low attack and scored in Roslyn’s 13-8 win over Wheatley. Kudos to Wheatley, too, for being classy and compassionate.

(Note: An additional +5 to Zisis for throwing the deuces up all swag-like during the player intros.)

Morgan Jaycox, St. John the Baptist: Technically, not a Nassau team, but I can break my own rules... She had six goals, four assists and four draw controls in leading St. John the Baptist to the program’s first ever win over Sacred Heart, 18-7, on Friday. Hard to imagine that they’d never beaten them before, especially since they’re in the same league and play each other so often, and SJB coach Janine Pirone said the Cougars have had girls lacrosse for “at least 12 years.” That's something.

Colleen Lovett, Wantagh: Lovett’s been doing what she does, but a performance like this makes ‘em take notice: she had 28 points in three games last week, including eight goals and three assists in a 20-13 win over Plainedge on Thursday. When, in a high-scoring game, you contribute to as many goals as the opponent totaled, that’s not bad.

North Shore’s defense and Alexis Greene: The Vikings defense was stifling and goalie Alexis Greene made 12 saves in a 12-3 win over Long Beach on Thursday. Any time a defense can hold a girls lacrosse team to three goals – a Conference I team that isn’t a pushover, at that – it deserves to be commended.

Julia LoRusso, St. Dominic: In her first game in three weeks, LoRusso had four goals and three assists and scored the tying goal with 31 seconds left, and the winner 20 seconds later in a 22-21 victory over Carle Place last Monday. She also had three goals and three assists in an 11-8 win over St. Mary’s on Friday.

Jocelyn Penteck, Floral Park: She had 12 points in two games, including six goals in a win over East Meadow. Penteck scored the tying goal with 49 seconds left in regulation and the winner with 12 seconds left in the second overtime of the 11-10 victory.

Jackie Jahelka, Garden City: The senior excelled last week, despite coping with the loss of her grandfather. Jahelka scored three goals, including the winner in a 13-12 overtime thriller against Farmingdale on Thursday. Saturday, after attending the funeral, she had four goals and an assist in helping lead the Trojans to a 19-15 overtime win over Cold Spring Harbor.

Erin Vaughan-Ware, Sam Santeramo and Caitlyn Buckley, MacArthur: The Generals have been on a nice run of late. Vaughan-Ware, an eighth-grader, scored three goals in both of the Generals’ wins last week, and the freshman Buckley had three goals and an assist in an 8-4 win over previously undefeated Herricks. Santeramo had 12 saves in a 10-9 overtime win over Mepham, and 15 saves in the win over Herricks.

Cate Soccodato, Our Lady of Mercy: She’s still going. The sophomore attack had 19 points in two games, including five goals and eight assists in a 16-4 win over two-time defending CHSAA Class A champ St. Dominic. That’s a statement performance in a statement game.

Gabby Morrocu, Glen Cove: She’s been scorching the net lately. The senior has scored 24 goals in Glen Cove’s last three games, including a career-high nine in its 15-8 win over Great Neck South

[lacrosse] has frozen over, North Shore's defense was mentioned as a player of the week. Nameless, but mentioned. Progress!

What would happen if 2 teams finished with same record for league and non league and exact amount of quality points? Say a 5 and 6 seed. How would they figure out brackets?

Yes Westhampton did crush Hampton Bays but at least it seems the coach or kids themselves did impose some limits on individuals . Still not sure if the 20 goal margin is needed but IMO as long as its not a few kids running up the score then what are you supposed to do.

A question....do you believe Whitman locked up the 12 seed with the win yesterday....or can they be taken by Smithtown E. with a loss?

Great question being they play each other monday... but even a win will be difficult for SE. According to points a good SE win will probably have them end up with about 109 and WW 110. So it will be close.

Good luck to both schools.

As coach Jim Mora once said "Playoffs"!Smithtown East please give me a break! Suffolk go to power conf. like Nassau did and all your inflated W's and stats go south.

Hey Islip you should be very proud, your team is bad so you run it up on a team that is even worse. Even more ridiculous is you have a couple of accomplished players who run it up to pad their stats, nice sportsmanship ,your program ,your coaches and your better players should be real proud of themselves, and the parents of those players should have pulled their own kids off the field.

Two points of interest:

1: The dirty tactics on defense are out of control. Players are using butt ends of their crosse, using their hips and legs to slow attackers down, and pushing in the back until they get called for it. I know the officials can't see everything; but one should at the minimum observe off ball play. Some players just lack the skill to play cleanly; fault of coaches to develop players.

2: Thin skinned officials. Emotions will run high during this seasonal point. Someone has to be logical. To card the coaching staff this late in the season makes no sense. A stern warning should have been suffice.

Good luck to Whitman on Monday and in the playoffs. Your goalie is a beast(in a good athletic way!)

Sure. A parent should start screaming at their own kid during the game while the kid is playing and force the kid to stop playing. Please. Get off your high horse or soap box or whatever your standing on because you sound ridiculous.

If the coach specifically was running up the score, blame the coach.

Stop with the nonsense, kids who play varsity lacrosse should know better , when you are crushing a team who is clearly out of their league you should not have your best players running the score up. Little kids playing pal even know this. It's about time some of these superstars show some good sportsmanship on their own and stop blaming the coach,22-3 is "ridiculous" and even more "ridiculous " is that your better players scored the majority of your goals. Let me guess some of the goals were show off unnecessary behind the back type shots. If your coach does not teach your kids good sportsmanship maybe you should.

Islip over Hampton Bays, 21-3
Sayville over Greenport/Southold/Mattituck, 16-7
MacArthur over Division, 8-7
Babylon over Westhampton, 17-7
Bayport-Blue Point over Rocky Point, 9-7

Highlights

MacArthur 8, Division 7: In the local rivalry match, Alex Goodleman had five goals as MacArthur (12-3) broke a 7-7 tie in the second half to win in non-league. MacArthur earned its first victory over Division (8-7) since 2006, according to coach Janine Bridgewood.

Poor game by officials who only called 1 charge on the girl who continued to dangerously run through defense with extended stick. Way to keep the integrity of the game Joe.

we have same problem in suffolk, kids scoring 9, 10 goals against very weak opponents. when they play a competitve team they score 2 or 3. they pad there stats against weak teams to stay in top ten in scoring. and look at there stats 80 goals and 5 assists. this is bad sportmanship, selfishness and bad coaching when you beat a team by 10 and have a kid score 10.

It's not nonsense. The scores have been lopsided across the board all season and we are all sick of it. We want alignments like Section 8.

Even worse when there are no consequences by coaches for those who completely ignore them. No team chemistry is what occurs when there is no passing. Is that what you want coaches?? My daughter is a junior and has accepted that year after year nothing changes with the chosen few who play the whole game. Coaches yell and the girls smirk at each other and dismiss them because they know they won't be pulled off the field . A disgrace to the girls who work hard and pass the ball. Try to teach a little integrity and humiliation to them! Try going over a tape against the team younare facing instead of nonsense conditioning! Play your hungry players who PASS the ball and sit the chargers or put them on defense! Make a difference this year with the new talent and watch what happens. I have been around long enough to see from an official point of view you have some young smart players-now use them! Good luck Generals, from an old guy who hopes things will finally get better.

This is insane- all I keep hearing about is keeping integrity of the girls game but clearly hs coaches dont realize [lacrosse] some families laugh at them for their inability to bench selfish players! I saw starvto whisper in the ears of the higher ups-that means YOU Mr. Noninvolved complimer on thr sideline!

Too funny ,some of these kids who are on the list for most goals scored have under 10 assists. They should have an award for the kid that has the worst ratio of goals scored to assists, the award can be called daddy's girl.

If they are laughing it is only because the only other option for them is to CRY. The system is broken. The AD doesnt care and until people are hired for coaching postions because they are the best candidate and not employees of the district this will continue. The coaching in girls high school lacrosse is terrible, most parents feel if these were club teams they would switch teams, but we are stuck with these teams and these coaches.

You have kids on the list with essentially a 12 to 1 ratio of goals scored to assists.I can only imagine what those games are like , we have a player like that, if you pass the ball to her you can be sure you will not get it back. These kids lead their teams in goals and charge calls ,lol.Amazes me that any coach would tolerate this or for that matter other kids on the team would tolerate.

Same nonsense in Girls HS Soccer. Wasteful practice sessions on "conditioning" where they should be working on game strategy, positioning/spacing and the game of possession.

It is an embaressment to see opponents pass the ball like a team and our coach allow the same 2 girls charge the net every time they get the ball. We will lose our playoff game Wednesday as a result of bad coaching- Its sad when they laugh about the coaches in school and talk about not passing the ball because they know nothing will change.

I have seen this coach on a couple of occasions. If past experience is an indicator, he most likely deserved it. The time of season is irrelevant. With this time off he can study his rule book!
