Calvert Hall is Ranked #1 High School In Baltimore for a reason- they are doing it better than the rest. 1,200 awesome students going on to be great men. Amen.
Thank you for the info CH dad. I bet your son is the best player on the team. You have that confidence about you. Everyone at CH has confidence- thats why they win. They know they are doing it better. You could bench the best players at CH and they still would win. There are 50 kids on the team- can't compete with the volume of players. CHC is winning championships because 3/4 of ALL of the kids who play lacrosse there are in the gym 5x/week for the ENTIRE off season (summer, fall, and winter). They are also playing wall ball and doing other things that are pretty boring and mundane to most but keep skills sharp because they have to pass a wall ball test just to be allowed the opportunity to try out. Starters are expected to be the best at all benchmarks (on and off field) for their position. The standards are different because the number of kids who want to play there allow them to be. Total BS; 1/2 the team play multiple sports which is encouraged by the HC. What percentage of the kids are out of state that are on Varsity and actually play? So in other words of the top 20 kids how many are native Marylander? Dear BS, There are about 6 varsity football players 1 varsity soccer player. No basketball players and no wrestlers. There may be 3 players from PA. "Starters are expected to be the best at all benchmarks (on and off field) for their position. The standards are different because the number of kids who want to play there allow them to be." AGREED. Its a lacrosse PROGRAM not a lacrosse team. Several sports at CH are competitive enough that playing multiple varsity sports is pretty difficult to do. Like someone else stated, there are only a handful of kids who play lacrosse as well as another sport at CH. Kids know before they go to CH that playing multiple sports will be very difficult and only a few will be able to do it. It’s the largest boys’ school in town and the numbers for tryouts allow for cutting kids who don’t make the cut. As for kids from out of state, there is one kid currently on the varsity team that is from PA....one out of more than 50. CH isn’t doing anything that other schools aren’t doing except preparing better.

Here's one name for you Rocco Romero. Google it. BL has been bringing kids out of state for long before Calvert Hall. The same with McDonogh. [/quote]
Well, McD is a boarding school hammerhead

Sad that most comments on here must come from folks who know nothing about this league and its past. Hall is on a historic run and the only way to continue is to load the program year after year-Hall's 2nd string players are as good as 1st. Thats the difference and you only get that by having huge numbers in your program. Age/holdbacks has been happening for 30 years and why it still comes up is mute. Every MIAA team has them. No advantage to any given team when they all have them. The same goes for recruiting in state or out of state players This league is so great because until now there has been 6-7 teams that are always in the championship mix. Very hard to win back to back and it is rare to win 3 straight.Going to be tough to beat them on this run but history shows it will happen. Many teams look to be very good this year and it should not be a surprise if things are shaken up at the top. Best of luck to all teams

Lacrosse world has changed dramatically in last few years with the country getting smaller with more information overload and explosion of club lacrosse. Holdbacks have been around like you say, but now holdbacks are at epidemic levels. The amount of holdbacks in MIAA now is 2-3 more than many years pass and continues on. I wouldnt be surprised if in near future , very few players on lacrosse field will be on age in MIAA play. CH has been ahead of all the rest of MIAA lacrosse teams. Unless BL or McD steps up and starts matching them, CH is the ruler for years to come. Gilman, St P still think like they are in the 80's. The rest dont have the resources at this time. Now does that mean some MIAA team may have a good team and compete occasionally. Yes, But they will be playing CH for Championship year after year .

Can’t wait to see how Spalding blows up this year! Lots of talent (that does nothing year after year) on their team. Let’s not forget that 2020 is definitely their year!

Still on your anti Spalding rant. When are you going to get over blaming Spalding and look inward at your sons lack of ability and skill to play lacrosse at Spalding's level.

Spalding’s level? MIAA bottom-feeder. Lost to Broadneck. They should relegate them to the B league.
All the # tags in the world aren’t going to change the trajectory of that program.

Spalding insider here. If they are going to make run at the playoffs this is the year. If the HC can keep the daddy ball in check they have a shot. Team has some talent. But there is nothing in the pipeline to keep them rolling. Jv this year will be B C level club players. Wish them all good luck.

SM had a FOGO who was 85%. It was make it take all year.
Nice try but that player was a senior in college when SM played in the championship game last season. Replying to the comment that SM was the last to win. Which team do you think spends the most money in the MIAA? SM had a FOGO who was 85%. It was make it take all year.

Best kids in AA Country play for Hawks and Hawks go to SM. Baltimore club scene too fragmented and diluted to benefit 1 school. CH size and cost huge advantages vs the rest of the Baltimore MIAA. BL having boarders will make things interesting.

Comical the resentment and bitterness towards out of state players. It has been happening for decades in this sport and even longer in other sports. Why is it so bad if a kid from the Midwest or South has the means to attend a great academic school and is good enough to play a sport there? To compete at a sport they love against the best the sport has to offer. MIAA teams carry 30-40 players on a team. If your kid is not making the team or playing I doubt it has to due with a handful out of state players on each team. Baltimore schools some more than others have been doing this for a long time along with the holdbacks. Severn, St. Mary's and Spalding are catching up with the holdbacks not so much with the out of state players. Nonetheless, it is a trend across the board. LOSING certainly changes the narrative for those parents that can't handle that their kid is sitting on the bench and not playing. Send your kid to the boarding school if you think it's such an affair advantage. If a player or coach is not playing or losing it usually has to do with being out WORKED!! Most 8th grade AA-Elite players can get into any High School they want and choose where to go. Doesn't matter the geographic. They're all Private Schools! To pick a school and then complain the blues when kid gets cut, not playing, not being developed or just losing is comical. CHC is the only(MIAA) team in the last 20 years to have run like this. The above thread shows who has won year after year. Players are flocking to that program from all over the state and country. WINNING does that. Which is why it is great for the entire league. It elevates the entire league. Playing CHC and beating them means so much more.It means the work put in has matched or exceeded CHC work. Wether it is getting more holdbacks, out of state players , best club players or just out Coaching them or beating them on the field with the personnel on the team. Either way soreness and bitterness are traits of losing.

We know, CHC dad. We love your constant reminders though. Clearly not a CHC dad

Get over yourself. Maybe some people just resent the fact that high school is the new college. Maybe it has nothing to do with being outworked or being bitter. Maybe it's just feeling like it's ridiculous that high school kids are being shipped off and boarded to play lacrosse - and not for academic reasons. Don't give me that! Maybe some people liked the local, regional rivalry, the fact that all the kids knew each other, played on clubs together. College was when you moved out of state and the stakes became so high. Now it's high school? Give me a break. Seems like a lot of parent ego to me. Who the heck ships their kid off in high school for lacrosse? What's the return on that? Ha.

Who the heck ships their kid off in high school for lacrosse? What's the return on that? Ha. Hit the nail on the head there! Its not these kids and their love of lacrosse - its the ego-centric parents who shop these kids around. Such greed and desperation! I feel sorry for these kids who just play lacrosse-lacrosse and more lacrosse. Thrown into every tournament their parents can get them into because they have to because they are on B. Trying out for UA All American in another less competitive region. Just hope that they are happy where they eventually pick for college and if its really where she wants to be. Skywalkers girls have been catering to these people for years. Just look it up, and if you know some of the parents just ask them. It adds to their program "to be good enough that kids from everywhere come to play here". Ask those other parents (without an axe to grind) about them and they will tell you that they are just average players bloating up the dynamics of already crowded rosters. I mean how good can you actually be playing against other kids from St Louis? (I get it-from these parents perspectives) Its like "Varsity Blues" all over again- the current one, not the movie. These parents are pushing-pushing and pushing as they line up with their dollars. Its not really about skill anymore, its maneuvering your kid into position to get seen. Makes me wish for the days of pickup ball again.

Either way soreness and bitterness are traits of losing. Like other MIAA schools, Calvert Hall decided not to play St. Frances in football because of the disadvantage in size and skill and the way that St. Frances was recruiting football players was not in the spirit of MIAA competition.

Who the heck ships their kid off in high school for lacrosse? What's the return on that? Ha. 99% of these teams are made up of local kids. So let's talk reality here. Kids have been leaving home for better opportunities for hundreds of years. Things have changed a bit if you haven't noticed. Do you honestly think the landscape for getting into a good college is the same as it was 10 years ago, 20 years ago? This is my favorite...the ROI. The ROI for any kid attending a MIAA school is the same no matter where you're from. We are all headed to the same place - the grave. Life is ALL about the ride and the experiences along the way. You sound like every other jealous troll that wants to blame your family's personal short comings on everyone and everything else aside from the obvious..YOU!!

Nope. No shortcomings, no jealousy. All about the ride. That's why I detest to see it spoiled by the machine that it has become. There is more to a return than money. I know all about the college landscape. You keep clawing and grasping your kid's way to the top, though, so you can brag to your dad friends. I mean, your kid can "enjoy" his ride. Good luck with that.

I can understand your angst for the pressure cooker and higher standards that are being brought to bare on these young men, but I'm sure some dad was thinking the same thing 20 years ago. It's evolution and there is nothing you can do to stop it. You either get with the program or get left by the wayside. The boys don't know the difference as you see it, they are just living it in the now. At the top of this sport, nobody's mommy or daddy can "will it to happen" or force their kid to do it. These boys are competitive, have incredible work ethics and take pride in the fact that they play in one of the best conferences in the country. Just because your kid doesn't have that will or drive doesn't mean others don't. Again, you're making excuses because you're angry with today's landscape and the fact that your kid just can't compete at that level.

Taking this to its conclusion, the end result will be All Star teams that are from all over the country. Great lacrosse with limited local players . The sport is growing in many areas with great athletes that hopefully will be recruited to play in the best league in USA. I cant wait to see how some MIAA schools respond to the recruiting/boarding of players. The rules are clear if you care to look for all MIAA schools, But they all turn a blind eye to the schools recruiting now. What I do find comical is MIAA schools refusing to play St Francis due to their recruiting of football players. Wonder if we will see any indignation from Spalding ? Severn ? or whoever as they refuse to play a school that recruits out of state talent. LOL

The schools spending the most are winning the most. It’s the same story for any sport.

I am hoping for St Frances model ( former Gilman model) . Bigger and more athletic players from all over country with a sprinkling of local role players. It is evolution as you say. Your super star incredible work ethic player will have no problem with that just like he didnt with playing St Frances.

I am not affiliated with CHC- pretty sure CHC lacrosse and every other MIAA lacrosse school also did not want to play St Francis.. Comparing that as an argument why you dislike the landscape of MIAA lacrosse is very COMICAL! Criticizing a player who has work ethic and is successful just because he plays and your kid doesn't is COMICAL! To think they don't have to work hard to be the best or they some how don't love the game the same. My boy and his teammates in Club - School and pick up games all want to play against the best and do what it takes to achieve that. The return is a good college education and to continue to grow and party(play) at the college level.Last I checked Lacrosse is growing bigger and faster than ever before. There is a place for every level of player in high school and college.Pleases top acting like parents are pushing some higher agenda for their unwilling kid.The only ones doing that are the ones on here crying the blues and making everyone laugh with the comedy show. Last I checked MIAA schools send hundreds of players to D2-D3 and Club teams every year along with D1. Believe me, AA county MIAA lacrosse schools will never stop competing against anyone! So please continue with the comedy show instead of taking your kid to the right school that fits his capabilities.Where I know he will shine and be attending the same college party as all the other over achievers, holdbacks, boarders, spoiled brats and winners.

Reality will hit you in the face and your son will be recruited over by some kid you have never seen or played against because he is outside the metro area. I have heard all the stories from 3 goalies per class to only have another goalie come in from the outside that was recruited by the coach. If you thought club was cut-throat, private school lax is even more (and they don't have to answer to parents). Win or go home now.

Short of being some outlier or starter, If you have no "juice" ( Club, personal relationship, family) , expect to leave the field disappointed. The starters are already in the mind of the coach, most players are going after next years spots or backups this year. The level is not that different between players once you get pass the few stand out best players. You better have some " juice" or get really lucky. Politics is still played in many MIAA teams and especially at tryouts. That is a fact. Most backups are only so athletic. Skilled for sure, but lets get real, these arent football players who run like gazelles and look like some Thoroughbred racehorse.
