Now that is interesting. Was not aware of that. I thought lacrosse was simply grade based and there were no age stipulations.

Local lacrosse is grade based so if your son is in 6th grade he can not play 2025 within the rules. That is just a FACT. This WSYL argument is just made up facts to support cheating if the original post about Express is true. If this is what any team is doing then it has to be called out by all of the others.

Blast is doing the same thing. 2 midfielders from 2024 have reclassed and are playing with Blast. I guess the new coaches were instructed to win. Pathetic, but that's the new way of lacrosse.

But the kids would have to repeat a grade at school to do it. What parents are doing that at this age? And what kid would want to do that?

You must be new to this if you don't think parents are crazy. There are a lot of reasons parents do it, not the least of which is to give their son an advantage over other kids. But, besides that, it could be done for academic reasons or the family simply moved to a new town (which was the case with the Blast kids) and the parents had them repeat a grade. It's far more common than you think. Wait till next year when 40+ kids that your boy is playing with now repeat 5th grade because the parents fell that they're "not ready for middle school". It's becoming a joke, but a joke that is far too common. Especially if the LI teams want to stay competitive with the out of state teams and the Dukes Nationals,True Nationals, etc... that grab kids from virtually anywhere.[/quote

If the sport ever gets itself together, it will be age based across the board, at least for pre-HS age . . .

AMEN!!!!

We can only hope they go to an aged based system. Until then my friends, any 6th grader playing 2025 is a cheater.

Unless they are reclassed/held back, in which case they are a 2025 grad year and completely within the current rules.

A hold back can absolutely participate in the WSYL. As a matter of fact, 8th graders play with the 7th grade teams every year. As long as their birthday is after 9/1. Word is they are going to change the date to 7/1 to get more interest from the Maryland clubs.

Arguing about holdbacks? Nothing better to do? Its clear and evident. Holdbacks are kids who were middle of pack at their own age group. When dropped down, they are at top of food chain. Make parents feel more proud that they can brag about little jonny. To me its insane unless its adevelopmental thing but that is usually spotted early on.

Any human being of the face of the earth can participate so long as he or she was born on or after the cut off date. They can be Doogie Howser and be in college; they can be a 7 time holdback and be in kindergarten; they can be home schooled by a religious cult. Its very simple, and its how most other youth sports organize themselves. No one cares what grade a kid is in.

WSYL should emulate the LLWS (which they openly try to do) by making a player eligible only once. For LLWS, only LL age 12s are allowed to participate. You can be the best player in the world, but if you are a LL age 11, than you can't play. Everyone has their one year to go - if their team makes it. So, the WSYL should settle on 9/1 or 7/1 or 1/1, and stick with it. Than for each year, eligibility will be for kids born on or after the cut off date, but before the cut off date one year hence. The clubs should then be permitted to bring a team to qualifiers and Denver (if they make it) consisting of kids who are bonafide members of the club, no matter what team within the club they are on. So a holdback heavy club can pull kids from say 2023 and 2024. Basically, make it an allstar team from within the club of all kids born within that years 12 month window. For the next year, it will the next successive 12 month window, and so on. All kids will be eligible to play once and only once - if they are good enough to make their club's team, and if such team qualifies.

You won't be getting too many of them most kids graduating in 2025 are born in 2007 so any holdback born prior to September 1st 2006 won't be able to participate.

So then they would not be in 6th grade then would they? They would still be in 5th if they are actually reclassed, not fantasy land, pretend reclassed. so if on September 1 of this year, they are in 5th grade then we have to suck it up. If a kid is in 6th grade then its just cheating and we can all go nuts at the first Tournament and see if the organizers have any cajones.

Correct, which only serves to illustrate how stupid grade based. Same kid - same speed, intelligence, athleticism, experience, skill, maturity, etc. But he gets to play at one level in youth lacrosse vs another level simply because he is in Ms. Jones' 5th grade class instead of Ms. Smith's 6th grade class.

Your not counting the 2024 kids reclassifying.
Channy is building a sick team

He took 2x from Express A and 1x form Express B. All are 2024 grad years. It's the Channy way.

Do you mean he took 3 kids from the 2024 express teams and put them on the 2025 express Channy team for the 17-18 season? Were these kids playing up in the past or actually repeating a grade in order to play down?

Lets start with one of the owners of Legacy since his son is a 2025 hold back. You won't see them go age based any time soon.

Making an principled argument about age- versus grade -based is separate from whether a club will change to age-based or not. When the whole sport goes age-based, the holdback (for athletic reasons) goes away on its own . . . I suspect that that transition will not happen soon enough for a current 5th/6th grader, but for those a coiple years younger it will, and the clubs will effect those changes to their programs accordingly. It won't be cut and dry.

holdback means he would be playing on the 4th grade team instead he is same age as your son and plays on the 6th grade team. Your sideline coaching is holding back your own kid. Didn't Legacy win the WSYL the year before with an age based team?

So the kid will be a grade ahead and several mints older. That's funny if you think that works. It's called playing down.

Grade ahead yes. But the same age! In some case months older , most cases, the better kids (hold backs) the same age- born in 2006 after sept 1st..

Is this even necessary, insulting a college kid??? Really??
Clearly there are three other coaches listed. He is not the head coach. And the head coach is his dad. So since he is a young experienced talented college lacrosse player, he can only add to the training atmosphere for the boys whenever he is available. How is it not worthwhile to incorporate him into the program if he is willing and interested in helping to train the boys when he can alongside his dad.
That deserves criticism???
As adults we should all know when to refrain from these inconsiderate comments. Is that too much to ask? We can debate issues and provide information within the forum in a respectful way without insults.

He won't. His dad is coaching Blast as well as an older 91 team too. If Mac shows up it will be for a guest appearance. I wouldn't want a 91 year old coaching anyway. They are terrible with kids and have a much different set of priorities. It's better to have the dad.

Okeefe was one of the top scorers in the country as a freshman. Most college kids have summers off, correct? Any amount of time that he contributes will be a great asset. The kids will LOVE AND BENEFIT from their time with him. Why must negativism be the rule of thumb for this forum? Oh, yeah, I heard it before and I guess it must be true "haters gotta hate". Please just stop....

Kids relate to and emulate the younger coaches. For training, it is excellent. Mac will show them cool tricks and plays and they'll want to copy him. Many of us old guys would look like fools trying to do the same. Would I want him calling the shots in games? No. I'm sure he won't be. Plenty of other old guys on the sidelines to call the shots.

All this is a distraction. Gillis is the coach and probably better off. Still some Hurricanes kids somewhere at a tournament that Okeefe forgot to call and tell them the coaches decided to pull out at the last minute.
