What is the consensus for where the top girls will be going out for tryouts this year in MD? My guess is that most girls will stay where they are but a few disgruntled parents that think they can get a full ride scholarship to UMd if they move to another team will change. When you have parents like that on your team you're better off without them. They will never be happy unless their kid plays every minute of every game and scores every goal.

[quote=Anonymous]How did TG TE and Liberty do at Hofstra? Who made the finals? Any other newcomers with a good showing
TG Igloo got handled all weekend. Doubtful those top girls will return. TE looked very strong and spanked Liberty black. I think the biggest surprise was Express, they have a handful of very talented girls who play a physical game. Overall it was a good tourny, well run and close to home Liberty beat TG, TG beat Elevate (twice) and Elevate beat Liberty - all close games - NOBODY got spanked. Express also lost by 1 goal to Elevate. Igloo lost to both Elevate and Liberty. It was good to see a tournament on LI with good competitive games. Something we should do more often.

Igloo losing to Icon is also very sad and this team will have trouble retaining/attracting new girls.

To the Md. parent, if you guys would get off your high horse and leave Maryland you would see other teams more often. Yes there are good teams in Md. and there are some good schools down south, but for the most part the better schools are up north. Some clubs care less about playing certain clubs. and more about the exposure to better schools. Just like the Md colleges going to see your girls play in spring season, the norther schools will go to events closer to home, not everyone wants to play at Maryland, and not every coach needs to go to Maryland to find good players So while the YJ parents are stupid enough to travel to Md. every weekend to play in front of the same coaches some clubs have figured out that they can get exposure to schools like B.U. B.C. Tuffs Lehigh, 'cuse all the ivies and UConn in a smaller tourney, and all those coaches have figured out that they don't have to travel to Maryland every time and stay close to home and still find good players. So you and the Yellow Jackets have your fun trying to make everyone els believe that you're the best, because the only people that care are you and the Yellow Jackets.......Birds of a feather

Ian sure there will be movent this year so next summer will begin a new.

M&D, Heros and TLC played in 5 tournaments, 4 in MD, 1 in NJ. Skywalker's played 4 tournaments this season - 2 in NJ, 2 in MD.
All of these programs will expand geographically next year as recruiting starts. I am sure the Massachusetts, upstate NY, and LI teams will all be at the same tournaments. Good competition to come.

Kids get better playing with and against the best talent. If you don't think that YJ is benefiting their girls by playing MD teams then I don't know what to tell you.

Just because clubs don't want to shlep down the Jersey Tpk. and to play your girls while you sleep in your bed doesn't mean they aren't attending tournaments to get there players in front of coaches, stop being so self important, the trend here on L.I. is away from the southern circuit and more towards the north where the better colleges are. Except for the Yellow Jackets, sh'e more concerned with winning tournaments than exposure for her girls to keep the money flowing. Just so you know, every girl on my daughters team was recruited except for 2 (both going to become Doctors), only 2 or 3 are in schools south of the Mason Dixon line so if you take your head out of you self important arse you can see that the director is bringing the girls to the tournaments that get the best results for her clientele, and it's not in Md.

Agreed, but the point made was that college coaches will be out taking a look at the top 2021 teams next Summer. That will herd the top programs to the same tournaments. Programs were keeping club travel expenses down for teams prior to the recruiting process starts in full

My point was, we never play Liberty, Elevate, Igloo etc. Maybe you are a little out of touch if your girls are already in college, but these clubs are not providing great service for the money they are charging. If you don't believe me, look at the tournaments they are playing in and actually look at the college coach list. Then go look at the college coach list of the tournament the same weekend that Skywalkers, M&D, YJ, Heros, etc are playing in and honestly tell me that these tournaments in Mass are well attended by coaches.

You sound like the most self righteous d-bag on here but are just too ignorant to see it. You come across exactly like the teams/parents that you are trying to educate. Why do you worry so much about what other clubs are doing, if a parent wants their kid to play on the most competitive team possible then who are you to say no one cares. You mention BC as if they do not venture south but it seems to me that many of their recent recruits are from the teams you cannot stand. If you do not see that YJ seems to be ahead of the curve in terms of getting their kids into great schools early ( not saying that is for everyone)then you are just blind. Have done many tournaments in New England and the commute is awesome the competition not so much, the college coaches do show up. That said tournaments on Long Island from a recruiting standpoint are essentially a waste of time.

There may be others, but I know of those two for certain. There are also 2019 commits to Yale, Notre Dame, BU, the list goes on and on. I know club directors on LI fill your brain with a lot of "truths", but maybe you should do some research and look at the actual rosters of the colleges you are talking about. They have to tell you something to shell out over $3000 to play for these teams when your MD counterparts only pay $2000

Any scoop on why the Reds...t program disbanded their 2021 team? Is it DK related? I know their beat player went to M&D last year Because all the girls left. Their top 2022 team left last year also.

Does Liberty still have a second team at this age or did they fold the girls into the black team? We played in the second tier division but didn't see them listed this weekend

Why did the Reds...t players leave? DK? DK wasn't the coach of that team. You can say Redhsirts. I don't think that is one of the clubs that gets censored. That whole club is a load of crap piled on a bigger pile of crap. All their teams fall apart when the parents finally realize this.

Club Lacrosse ... What's Best for Player? by Trevor Tierney NCAA Ast. Coach posted 01/29/2014
THE "BEST TEAM" MAY NOT BE WHAT IS BEST FOR OUR KIDS “And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” - Batman Begins Don’t get me wrong here. I love all of the players, parents and families that I get to work with in sports. I would not want to be doing anything else with my life! But lately, I have been bewildered by a phenomena that seems to be growing in youth athletics. There is a constant search amongst parents and players to be on the “best team” that wins the most games and tournaments. It is no longer enough for our children to play on a local youth or high school team and enjoy the experience of playing sports. Furthermore, it is no longer even enough for our children to play on a good club travel team that plays well together, is competitive with other great teams from around the country and has top-notch coaching. Rather, there is a “grass is greener” mentality amongst parents and young athletes who are on the constant lookout for the absolute greatest team to be a part of. There are a lot of factors driving all of this. It is partly due to the parent’s misconception that the better their child’s team, the better their chances for recruitment and success down the road (by the way, college coaches do not even know the scores of the high school games that they are scouting—they only notice who is 6’4”, 225 and runs like a gazelle in the Serengeti). I believe that this mentality runs deeper than that though and we have simply lost touch of what sports are all about. You know when you watch the people on a reality show like Honey Boo Boo or Swamp People and you say, “man…those people are nuts!”? Well, I hate to tell you, that is all of us in sports right now! We are those crazy people. And for the past few years, this perception of making sure our children win all the time and at all costs has become utterly mind-boggling. Every single game in sports, one team wins and one team loses. That’s just the way it works. It is completely narcissistic for us to think that we ourselves (or our child) should never lose. What fun would sports be if we knew that we were going to win every time anyway? Every great athlete and coach that I know has had their fair share of ups and downs. Even though my claim to lacrosse fame is that I won two NCAA National Championships, a MLL Championship and a FIL World Championship with Team USA, I also got my butt kicked a whole lot along the way! My youth teams were disgraceful, my high school team had some serious rough patches, I can’t even count how many goals Syracuse scored on me at Princeton over the years and I was on the only USA team that lost in the World Championships since 1978 for goodness sake! Even Michael Jordan (who I apologize for even mentioning in the same paragraph as my athletic career) admitted in a commercial, “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” The point is, that no matter what an athlete does in their career, they will have some wins and they will have some losses. Trying to control that is not going to change anything. Furthermore, there is actually something about the pursuit of always winning that is detrimental to our children’s development as athletes and as people. As I have pondered this mindset that we are witnessing in youth sports for the past few years, I knew something was wrong. I just didn’t know how to explain it, other than sounding like a grumpy old curmudgeon. The fact is though, there is scientific evidence that shows that we should actually want our children to lose! Again, as I have written time and again, I am not saying that athletes should not care about trying to win and just act like it does not matter. And I am certainly not an advocate for the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. Our young athletes should care deeply about trying to win and be their best. And when they go into competition and want nothing more than to win that game, it will be absolutely fantastic for them when they lose! Before you think I have been hit in the head with too many lacrosse balls (which is completely factual), let me explain further. In the past month, I have been fortunate enough to study under one of our country’s leading researchers on human resilience at Harvard, Dr. Shelly Carson. As soon as I sat in our first lecture, the lightbulb flashed on! I started to realize that when we want our child to play on the most dominant team, we are completely missing the boat on how sports build resilience for young men and women. This is not just me blabbing about it either. There is decades of research being compiled by people much smarter than me (surprising I know) that explains how we all develop resilience and how this leads to overall happiness, well-being and success. And isn’t that what we really want for our children? I am starting to understand how sports are actually the perfect set up for resilience training as losses are very stressful and a challenging adversity for young athletes to face. From this perspective, you realize that no one is going to die, get seriously injured, get cancer, lose a family member, get dumped by their girlfriend (and if so, good riddance I say), lose their home, get thrown in jail, fail out of school, or face anything truly tragic from losing a game. And while I might be sounding trite here, the sad fact is that all of us will face one or several of these things at some point in our life. Nobody’s existence on this earth is perfect. We all encounter some serious adversity whether we like it or not. With that being the case, don’t we want our kids to learn how to deal with it in a skillful manner? In the field of psychology, resiliency has been defined by Luthar (2000) as, “the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change . . . a positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity,” (as cited in Carson lecture, 2014). So, not only do the skills of resiliency allow people to overcome and recover from tragic experiences in their lives, but resilient people also flourish, grow and experience tremendous well-being and success in their lives. And that is exactly what we want for our children. I will take that over any win, any tournament championship and any trophy. The best aspect of athletics, in my mind, is that it teaches us resiliency, the ability to endure, overcome and find greatness in our lives. As coaches and parents, all we have to do is be positive and supportive of our children no matter if they win or lose. We just have to be there for them as they learn to get back up and keep moving on with their heads held high. That is how our youth can learn to deal with life on life’s terms and develop as strong individuals. What a great gift that is to bring our children and I cannot think of a more powerful way to do it than through athletics!

There are a lot of ways in which resiliency can be taught through sports, which I will go into some more detail down the road. For right now, I will pass along that one of the most effective ways in handling a stressor is utilizing "problem-focused coping", which means taking an active approach towards finding a solution. In summation, I will pass along what I tell my players and parents on our Denver Elite lacrosse teams. Instead of finding a better team to play on, find a way to make your team better. This is how you can truly learn to win something of lasting value through the sports.

Competition within this age group on LI is a good thing. Sure would be nice to be able to stay home and play competitive games without having to travel. Enjoy the rest of your summer !

Changes have to be made or this team is toast.

Stars has a very good girl on the draw and if you get down in those short games and can't win the ball, it's tough. One was by a single goal to Skywalkers. The other 2 were to M&D who didn't lose a game all year. Not exactly panic time. Hero's has never beaten Skak. I would certainly say they are right up there with the best teams in MD. Not to mention they are the only team to have beaten M&D in the last 2 years when no MD team has been able to do so.

Good stuff. I would agree a MD parent would not slam YJ Skak. That is a quality team that pushed us to play our best twice this year. The top teams will add talent through the tryout season and will have very competitive games next year. Tryouts will be very interesting next month!

Of course there are plenty of teams in MD that can beat them Skak is only a A- (B+) team by our standards here in Maryland, and by next year who knows; probably instead of 3 of our programs beating you it will be 5-6 programs. The that will make you a B program as well, so have some humility. I have seen no improvement in your girls other than them getting a little bigger between this year and last. Love this, tells people to have some humility while comparing a team, "by our standards in MD". Love the irony. Again, no one in MD would say that. Skak is certainly amongst the top few teams at this age anywhere. You guys up in LI like to stir crap up with each other about your clubs.

Bet these Skak parents sit around the fire talking about how they beat M&D when the girls were in 5th grade and that they are still the best team on LI and nobody is even close! What a bunch of tools!
