These preseason polls rely too much on last year without taking into account the changes on some of these teams. I won't say Maryland is too high, but it will be interesting to see how the loss of Cummings plays out. She is not going to be easy to replace.

Teams ranked too high:

Stony Brook (Should be 8-10)
Syracuse (might drop out of top 10)
Stanford (drops out of top 20)

Teams ranked too low:

Northwestern
USC (Final 4 team)
Colorado makes it into the top 20 for first time

SB is too high. Maybe top 20. Stop K. Ohlmiller and you stop SB.

SB's problem is not talent. They were out coached in an elimination game vs Syracuse last year by a coach that exploited the 8m obstruction shot rule.
Syracuse played down in tight on the offense end and repeatedly made an aggressive move toward the cage with a pump fake shot and got the call whereas SB played a much more spread out offense with a set play.
Hopefully SB's coach learned something from that game for this upcoming season.

SB also did not graduate too much talent this past year. Could be a good year for them.
Maryland probably going to slip a little this year.
USC is looking very good too.

I disagree. If there is a women's coach who know how to work with a shot clock it is JS. 60 seconds for MLL and only 30 seconds for boxla. And likely Gait being the other coach.

Holding Syracuse to 7 goals is bad. Come on that's as good as you can be against a. Kayla traenor team full of seniors

If fall ball is a good indicator Stony Brook will be right at the top all season.

Didn't the UVA assistant coach of like 15+ years quit? Had a dad I know who's daughter goes there say the HC was so bad the assistant couldn't take it anymore. Don't know how accurate that is nor whether it was this past spring or the prior.

If fall ball is a good indicator Stony Brook will be right at the top all season.

If fall ball is an indicator, BC beat towson, loyola and lost to maryland and penn state by 1 without two starters, both were on u19 team.

It's just too bad they don't play a tough schedule. They play a few tough teams, but way too many cream puffs. They might go further in the tournament if they were tested more often during the year. And no, fall ball is not an indicator of much. But they should be very good.

Murphy would be nothing without someone feeding her the ball. Amazing finisher, but without Ohlmiller her goal total would be reduced greatly.

Fall Ball is not and never has been a good indicator of anything except how a team is doing in the Fall.

Merry Christmas and good luck to all.

And ... she wouldn't score nearly as much if they didn't play such a weak schedule. Ohlmiller is the only real superstar on the team.

I went to the Hofstra v Harvard game last year.
Hofstra has become tough to watch. The things they do wrong are so elementary it's painful

SB's defense didn't play badly in the game against Syracuse last year.
Syracuse played down tight on the offensive end and managed to get the SB defenders to step back into the 8 and then would fake a shot, get the whistle and score on the free position.
SB never used that strategy. They are a more dynamic team then Syracuse but Syracuse did what they had to do to get the win.

But if she didn't have Ohlmiller or if she played in the acc or big ten she wouldnt have 100 goals.

Last year was tough to watch, but they have a new OC and DC. One of the biggest problems last season was the old DC wanted to force a zone defense on the girls and it didn't work. Lots of goals were scored on them right in front of the goal. This year their new DC, Shanna Brady from U of Md, is running an aggressive man-to-man defense and if fall ball is any indication they have improved a ton. They also had a TON of injuries last year, and hopefully this season they won't have as many. I expect a record around .500, if not just over.

Several top players left, and the lack of respect by SS to her players and staff will never change- it's how she was raised. If I were a betting man I would put the farm on this being her last season there, the go to the net Top Guns mentality is easily stoppable. Stony Brook will do well, and a few NY D2 teams will be a sweet surprise.

Agreed. Around .500 is doable if you look at the schedule, which is tough. The incoming freshmen did look really good in the fall, and got lots of playing time. The upper classmen are not dominated by just one player any more. Talent and skill is more spread out. Two strong, fast, aggressive LI players at MF, with a nice, fast lefty defender from MD are just a few of the incoming talents.

Fall ball is meaningless, everybody gets playing time and coaches are evaluating their teams, in the regular season they will have a much shorter bench when the need arises

Watched SB play a top 10 team this fall and JS only played 15 kids..other team played 26 kids..scores mean nothing in fall

Fall does not mean much I agree but do you really expect people to believe you sat and counted number of substitutions in a fall ball game when players are wearing pinnies with all different numbers etc. and if you did I suggest a hobby like golf. it's fall all focus shifts to spring. Going to be a very interesting year so let's sit back and enjoy it

I agree. Getting an overall "feel" for the team is the most important result of any fall ball game. js using only 15 players is not a surprise. He's so insecure that he'll do anything for any win, even a meaningless fall ball game.
