Question. So say this 2020 is on the older side for the new cutoff, she will no longer appear on a 2020 roster, but now a 2019 roster? And obviously same for other older girls in other years? Is this for this coming summer or next?
Thank you.

It will be age based, not graduation based - U15, U16, U17, etc

That 2020 girl played up her entire travel career until she moved from TG to YJ. As they get into recruiting age, they have to play with their grade. She was one of the better players on the field no matter who she played with whether it's travel or high school. BC is lucky to have her.

So she wasn't playing up, she was playing w her appropriate age until now, when she is playing down. I know she is excellent and this has nothing to do with her per se, but lets get the facts and nomenclature straight. She is now playing down against younger kids. When she was playing at her own age, she did quite well and therefore shows she is a very good player.

She played several years with 2018 TG. Played with kids a couple years older and stood out. She was one of the best players by far. She is flat out good and it is certainly not because she is now playing at her graduation class. And as far as YJ poaching, TG have lost their very best players at nearly every young age group the last couple years, the parents and kids are walking away, not being poached.

a couple years older and stood out? Was she playing with TG2016?she should be playing 2018 base on her age not 2020

As a MD parent I'm confused. What's with all the complaining we hear about our girls being older? Sounds like you guys have more older girls then we do.

She never played 2018. She played with 2019. She is an 8th grader and if she is 13 turning 14 this year than what is the issue?

So what is the date for cutoff? This will also work the other way as well. Girls born late in the year like late October or November will get to play down.

Is it playing down when you go by a certain date? You are either born before a certain date or your not.

no more playing down with your graduation group. If you are a hold back, you need to play with proper age kids. On the boys side some parents that should have their children taken away have held their kid back 2 years to have a competitive lacrosse edge in recruiting

They will need to play with their age or up. A younger girl can play up in an older age group, but not down in age. Age groups are determined by 9/1-8/31 of given years. So for instance, generally speaking, if a girl was born between 9/1/00 and 8/31/01, they "should be" in 9th grade this spring (or 2019 grad year). I they r, they will stay w the same aged girls. But if instead, their birthday is in this range, but they are a 2020, they will now be playing w a lot more 2019s, because that is their general age cohort.

And that's generous. My daughter is born in late Sept. 2000 and is, age appropriately, a 10th grader. there are a lot of kids in our town who are born earlier in 2000, but are 8th graders.

Couple of things. The kid is a very good player, did the hold back year help her ,I would bet it did . Did it help her even when playing" up" at 2019 as in " that kid is really good considering she is a year (grade) younger" probably. The fact is the college coaches do not care and do not ask the kids how old they really are so the parents used that to their advantage so good for them. Is some of the animosity toward the kid because people are just plain jealous of her ability, absolutely, is some of it because parents are embarrassed that they did not take advantage of "the hold back" to help promote their kid ( takes some courage to do it especially because of the social stigma that your kid was left back presumably because they were not academically gifted enough ), probably.

In the age group defined from 9/1/02-8/31/03. Most instances that is someone who is currently in 7th grade, or a 2021, if they r "on age". A Nov 2002 will be on the older side of the age group.

What throws off so many people on this board is the assumption that most states use a calendar year cutoff for school grade, when in fact most states use Sept 1 or Oct 1 for cutoff. NY and CT are just about the only states that generally use Jan 1 as the cutoff.

A kid born before Sept 2000 in 8th grade is double hold back in almost every state in the country. That's unreal. I think a few states use Aug 1 as the cutoff, so an Aug 2000 would be a single hold back in those places, but that kid would have already been one of the older kids in the "correct" grade. Hope the holdback was academic.

Well those "8th graders" will now be playing w a lot of 10th graders who are the same age I guess. About time.

Cut off in NY is 12/1 - not calendar year.

So won't there always be "younger" kids versus others on the field. The book Outliers details this with Canadian hockey team-big issue in younger years as that 9 to 12 month gap is a big percentage of there life.

If a kids Bday is August 25, versus a kid Sept 5 that kid is almost an entire year younger, correct? But playing in same age group. Maybe best to look at a hybrid option ...Grad year, with a not older than requirement.

Also this is USLax doing this. Do we think that the the big tourneys will go to this knowing that college coaches recruit grad year? This actually may help players that want to play up get much better. Many clubs restrict better players from playing up even if they could compete. Should be interesting....help this girl when with LI top guns it seems....

Although I've seen different dates in NY, districts seem to have a choice between Dec 1 and Jan 1. Almost no states use Dec 1 either -- the vast majority use a date earlier than Dec 1 too. That's probably why US lax picked Sept 1 as the cutoff. It might be the closest to grade based that you can get given that the cutoff varies state by state.

"The coaches recruit grad year" thing is a red herring. How come every other sport that does things by age requirement is able to recruit? The reality is, coaches will get a better sense of the players ability when they play against kids their same age.

There's a new king in town. In the finals of the National Girls Lacrosse League (NGLL), the 2020 Integrity team beat Heros Green 7-5 to win it all. Heros beat M&D Black in the semi's and Integrity beat Stars. The Integrity 2020's were already a really good team but winning the NGLL puts them on a level equal to M&D, Heros, etc.

Also, Integrity beat Maryland United East in the quarterfinals. Md United not as sexy as they used to be. Very over-rated.

Beating YJ 2020 I agree would be a challenge. And not only that but the team is pretty
Stacked, with a really good player added this year from TG. That will indeed bring more depth to the already great team. It's the making for a great summer.

I see Maryland United also beat Heros Green during regular season. Integrity beat Md United by a narrow margin. I am not seeing why you would say the MD United 2020 team is over-rated. If anything they are right there with Integrity and Heros.

Md United's "star" has dimmed over the past few seasons, for all teams across the board, not just the 2020's. A few years ago they were the shiny new toy. But, the shine has worn off as their true goal has been exposed: money. Not as many happy parents as before. Kids going to other clubs. I think that is what was meant by over-rated.

First of all, the correct word should have been spelled 'Too'. Second, you're wrong about the tournaments they're in. Summer Genesis has M&D Black, Heros Green, Integrity, TLC Red, Stars, yj curcio, SkyWalkers Blue among others. Hardly a "B" tournament. Then Project 120...don't know much about it yet. The Grind (I'll give ya that one) and then USL U14 National Tournament. Not much "B" action in any of these, except maybe The Grind.
You sound like a concerned YJ parent to me.
