And she did not get noticed until her junior year? Wow, she must be amazing. Which high school did she play at in MD? Was she at McDonogh? She had to have been. Only 6 sophomores on the NU roster last spring, must be one of them - 2 from LI, 1 MD, 1 upstate NY, 1 GA and 1 FL. And none of them got a full ride. In fact, no player on the NU women's lacrosse team got a full ride. In fact, no player on any women's lacrosse teams get full rides. Taylor Cummings isn't on full scholarship.

And this is why we are all nuts, someone says someone got a full ride without playing travel lacrosse year round starting in Kindergarten and the fact checking starts trying to throw cold water on the statement because our entire lives revolve around year round lacrosse.
Could it have happened sure, probability very slim however it does illustrate that if you were born with great athleticism you will be able to play something somewhere without year round highly expensive training. On the other hand, kids with cement hands or kids that don't have the hustle gene will have a very tough time regardless of how much money they spend.

I'm not a big travel proponent either, but funny how the "coach" got quiet after people called BS on his niece story. He was making some valid points until he went too far.

Too funny - almost sounds like the story about that girl who played at Northwestern from a non-hotbed area and did not really play lacrosse but was a three sport letter athlete. She also did not commit until her senior year and was only noticed by Amonti-Hiller because her parents sent her up to a Northwestern camp. Pretty far fetched huh? That girl from Texas never got a full-ride though....

Training 7 days a week won't matter for some. Others are born with great athletic ability and the love to run. If this is your daughter, you don't need the bumper sticker for her to play in college. Coaches can see who's athletic and who likes to run in the first 5 minutes of watching any game. Anyone can go to cage with the ball but how they work when they don't have the ball is really telling.

100% correct , That's usually the underrated players in High School who does not play on a Top Rated Travel program and is over looked by politics and stupidity of the High School coach who feels his "chosen few" will get him a "Championship" , as his young group of girls start to Burn out as they get older , and the ones who were over looked rise to the top . I am sure many can relate to this from a town ball aspect. Training 7 days a week won't matter for some. Others are born with great athletic ability and the love to run. Look at High School roster sizes because they usually tell a towns story. Full benches with max rosters means everyone is forced to share the ball at the younger ages which keeps lots of players involved. Small HS benches and teams with limited subs usually have town programs that revolve around a few players.
Most of the 2020 call ups this year to JV and Varsity will be from weaker towns that need bodies. 8th graders that deserve to be called up are sometimes left down because they play in strong towns with big player pools.

That's why, to me, all kids should be rotated through D when they are growing up. Defense is work and effort, without all of the fanfare of "going to the cage" and scoring goals. The kid you see running and working hard on D is the kid you want on your team. The kid that only runs when the have a chance to score is the kid that hasn't been taught the right way. That's the parent who says "score 5 goals today and we'll get you a slurpee". Just the absolute wrong message to send. Unfortunately, a lot of parents send that message. A strong offense comes from a strong, aggressive, hard working defense. Those D kids should be praised as much, if not more than, the kids on the other end potting the goals.

so true, so true...way too much glory is always heaped upon the girl/boy who "goes to the cage' or has coach yelling "green light, so & so"..never mind where the ball, more often than not, originated from--a stellar or routine play on the defensive end. thats where the real work is done...but parents lovvve it when Johnny or Mary looks like a stud by scoring on a hapless goalie...

On BOTC it is often about goal scoring. In my somewhat limited experience, on the field, our coach ALWAYS praises great defense and goal tending to the players and the parents, and keeps defensive stats to discuss. What quality coach is not a lot about defense and valuing smart, solid defenders.

So what really happened this weekend with TG's and Legacy? The game ended in a tie and the TG coaches and parents went back and reviewed a tape and got something overturned? Does anyone know the whole story I was only getting bits and pieces from parents.

The top 100, the pre season players to watch and the year end awards always go to the stat leaders. Some are the best of the best and some are stat builders that beat up on over matched competition. Sadly there are very rarely any defenders that get accolades. In a sport where selfish play is now the norm, nobody ever praises good defense.
Except for the very best of teams, all lacrosse teams have black holes where once certain players get the ball you might as well stop running because it's never ever coming back (whoever had the slurpee line, insert it here).

That was my post and I agree. Any quality coach realizes the importance of defense as does any parent that actually pays attention to the entire game and understands the concept of team sports. Just like hockey, a lot of lax goals start with a defensive stop. Then it's a nice clear or transition break that leads to a quick goal at the other end.
It's the parent that doesn't get the team concept that is the problem. You see them all over BOTC and screaming on the sidelines. They taught their kid that scoring goals is the only way to contribute. Their kid is the one that doesn't ride their defender back up the field all the way to the restraining line. Their kid is the one that lets the middies and D do all the hard work. If it can't possibly lead directly to a goal they aren't hustling. And that is the living through my child parents fault, which is tragic.

Ugh, also very true. Every other sport moves the ball around. Unfortunately in lacrosse its very easy to hold the ball and your possession so the selfish ones can keep it and reset over and over rather than pass. I can't even be mad at my daughter for not scoring, she is open and in the right spot but the many wont make the pass. Their parents must have promised them slurpees

As the father of a defender/middie, I say a big AMEN to this discussion! Luckily for her, she did play on a travel team that emphasized defense, and she excelled. She's a rising senior and she'll be playing in the CAA.

Good for you that your club preaches defense, our club treats it like PAL where the weaker kids desperate to stay on the top team are forced to change positions. Our team is 95% offense running through a few kids and 5% defense. Until defenders start getting the praise they deserve clubs will continue to pump up the players with the most points

Did SL coach the team? Etc. SL is the head coach of the 2020 team, the program is a very well run. A lot of practices. The 2020 is very talented and the 2nd team had a pretty good summer too. If you are looking for a new team feel free to come over. The more talent the better. I really enjoyed watching this team play this summer.

Thanks for the info. One question, when you referred to the 2nd team - Are there 2 teams per age group? An A and a B?

my daughter was not on Legacy but I did get to watch them a couple of times. They had a very competitive 2020 team, and SL did a great jobof assembling this squad . I am sure those parents are very pleased and it's nice to see good teams in action. My daughter is happy where she is, but if she ever wanted to make a move that would be a place we would put high on the list. Team plays a great team game, and while not having any true superstars has a core of about 8-10 very good girls.

its always great to hear people on this site actually compliment another team/program/coach...so often all the comments are derogatory and nasty...i dont know SL or Legacy, but based on all the comments and knowing one particular family/girl on the 2020's--who has nothing but glowing words fr both SL and the organization, it is refreshing to know that at this stage of the game at least, Legacy is doing the right thing and not doing a money grab. Nice stuff!

Listen, SL is out there for the right reasons and doing a great job, but if you think that he wouldnt want to have 3-4 teams at each age group and making a ton of money doing it you are crazy.
I look forward to tryouts and my daughter playing for Legacy again this year, it was fun to watch this team play and have coaches that know what they are talking about and no politics

I am not naive & i fully recognize the $$ factor..i did say "at this point".and i also know that it is a buisness and the "more the merrier" when it comes to padding the bank acct. but the fact that SL started a team/program and did it in such a positive manner, speaks volumes about the idea.He is not a failed, fined & suspended Wall Street salesman, or a HS/College coach who wants to pad the retirement account off of a girls lax program. It seems like he saw a need for a fresh program and is running with it. Good for him and Legacy--hopefully it causes the other programs to see what they are up against.

Apparently you can't comment on the Tryouts posts, so I'll start the bitching here - and this isn't directed specifically at anyone. $75 for a 2-hour (or less) tryout?? I know clubs want to be sure families are serious and not using the tryouts as free clinics, but that's a bit steep. A nominal fee of $20-25 would be plenty to keep the bargain hunters away and the rest should be a cost of doing business and/or rolled into the annual club fees for those who are selected. For those who will say this is a dead horse - beat away!

without a doubt the tryout fee is way too steep for every program...but its like a Yankee Stadium beer--if they can charge $12 bucks for it and sell enough, then they will..until folks stop buying the $12 beer, they will continue t pump em' out.Never understood what the fee was for actually---who's time are we actually paying for?

so a big program has 200-400 kids try out for a program...do the math....20k or more in just tryout fees...so, college players cant be paid so they dont (are not supposed to) get any $$...those keepsake tryout shirts are nada cost..that leaves a ton of dough for the Directors...not bad gig for standing around on a field for a weekend with clip board....
