We are going from Brine (June 30-July 3) to the Best of Best (July 5-6) - what is so bad about one extra day of lacrosse in the middle on July 4

We received a mail about this too. It is very expensive. If you have attended a 3d event in the past I am sure you will see much repeat from what you have already seen.

My overall impression about 3d is that it serves as a great example of some of the best and worst of lacrosse culture.

The leaders if you can get exposure are mature and dedicated
The program is well conceived and organized
The drills are original

The coaches are young lax bros
Who you know is more important what you know
Who you play for more important than how you play
Size more important than skill

Depends on what you are looking for - buyer beware!

Heading into the summer before freshman year, already running into conflicts between Football and Lacrosse.

From June 2014 - November 2014 how will you prioritize? Feedback needed please. Would love to hear from an anonymous Lax coach.

My thoughts:
1 - Football Games
2 - Football Practice
3 - Lacrosse Individual Showcases
4 - Lacrosse Club Tournaments
5 - Football Conditioning Workouts
6 - Lacrosse Club Practice
7 - Lacrosse HS Conditioning Workouts

If Your son wants to Play d 1 Lacrosse Its simple, NO FOOTBALL Go to gym work on your game, do as much lax as possible, get recruited and go back to football in 10th-11th Grade.
It works

that is really dumb advice and pretty much not advocated by most college coaches. They want multi-sport athletes. Read the articles.

"IF" you are from LI how do you know you are already attending Brine? Only one more day of lacrosse?... Apparently you have never played in July in Maryland in 90degree heat, 70% humidity on turf with a helmet on....but by all means keep pushing your son
And if your son wants to play D1 Lacrosse make sure he loves the sport and play whatever sport he can and wants to at the time, if he NEEDS to concentrate on lacrosse solely right now he's probably not good enough to play D1 and he will remember games (fball, soccer, hoops) with his friends rather than some showcase camp. Each player will find his/her correct spot, not everyone plays at Virginia and there are thousands of happy college lacrosse players at other schools. Instill the passion, the rest will come.

We went to the 3d Blue Chip recruiting seminar in January. Their recomendation was that the kids should continue to play multiple sports. The coaches like to see that dedication, plus it helps burn out.

Sorry, not from LI so yes we do know we are going to Brine and then coming to LI for Nat Invite. This site is great thanks for the advice.

Also, we are from further south than MD and did Brine last year too - Brine is on grass and the real heat/humidity is August deep south. June/July in MD/NY is sweater weather for us. Joking but not very worried just need to stay hydrated. My boy does love the sport. I've asked him whether he wants to push it that hard and he says yes.

Also, I agree that multi sport is the way to go. For us from August until the end of Football, lacrosse is a Sunday only deal.

That's a load of crap. Football never made anyone a better lax player. Kids that excel at both football and lax are just gifted athletes. One has nothing to do with the other. How many top basketball recruits are playing lacrosse over the summer to get better at basketball? NONE. Silliest notion ever. Show me the randomized study that supports this thinking? Doesn't exist. Please don't start with overuse injury stuff in little kids. We're talking about HS players here. Football is great if you don't mind the injuries and want to play football in college.

Yeah cause they have all the answers... Did you also listen to the part where they told you to hold your kid back for lacrosse? Give up another year of your life to get recruited, sound advice.

And there is a handful of kids from LI that missed the LI Brine regional and went through another region that announced their team already.

My Kid took this last Fall off from Football. He went to a couple Camps/Showcases, 3 Tournaments with club team, and SWR with High school team. Was also in Gym every day. He is verbally committed to Top 20 lacrosse/Academic school. He will now play 2 Years of varsity football. He missed one year of Jv Football, and it worked out. Think its all up to Kids/Family.

Do a little google seach about multi-sport athletes and lacrosse (and maybe start with this link: http://www.uslacrosse.org/multimedi...nd-off-on-multi-sport-participation.aspx) and you will find out prretty quickly and in a fact-based way you are just spewing nonsense.

Thanks for sharing. Was college football an option before his sabbatical? It sounds like lax is #1 for your son and it worked out great - congrats!!

What about a boy who has both doors open right now? Isn't it premature to shut the door on one of them now before he has even attended a single HS class?

I was at a lecture given by John Danowski who spoke about the importance for kids to be in any competitive situation, taking the free throws at the end of a tied basketball game or being in a 3 minute drill in football or any other type of pressure situations makes for better athletes and competitors, so yes, throwing a football is not going to make you a better lacrosse player but playing quarter back will make you a better competitor and athlete

FWIW - I work with a Dad of a HS senior who said the Brine is the single best event he has been to through the years. And he has been through them all (the good and the bad.)

Your an idiot. There is no fact. Show me study that proves this. You can't because it doesn't exist. It's a school of thought. Not based in fact. These same coaches recruit Lacrosse only kids for their teams. Look, I could care less. Make your kid play football, good luck.

That's great anecdotal information from a great coach. If your a gifted enough athlete to be able to play QB and excel at basketball and Lacrosse, that's great. However, it's the fact that the kid is a gifted athlete, not that he plays three sports. One sport is not making him better at the other. That kind of athlete would excel if he only wanted to play one sport.

I dont agree, you think practicing lacrosse once a week over the fall and winter will develop you more as a lacrosse player than 6 days a week strength, speed and practicing football and Actually competing.

Not going to happen. Regardless of the off season sport, working on being an "athlete" over 1 or 2 lacrosse practices a week will have a bigger effect on the kids as they grow as athletes.

Yes, thank you for your wisdom. Parents of boys on this team, like me, were thinking it was a strong, competitive team. But leave it to you, the anonymous board oracle to show the rest of us the way....

Maybe not the best, but we like the team, all the boys and their families...

your boy didnt make the team?

You want a study proving that playing another sport helps you become a better lacrosse player. Can you please find a study proving that being a multi-sport athlete does not make you a better lacrosse player? Since you are so certain that playing another sport will not help you with lacrosse, you do the work and find the study that supports your rationale.

Uhh, they are both schools of thought. No fact on either side. All anecdotal. However, isn't it funny that Lacrosse is the only sport where you have this thought process. Top, Basketball kids are not told by the likes of Coach Cal, "make sure you play Lacrosse in the Spring". Are they? No, never. Is Sabin telling his top football recruits to play lax in the spring? NO. Are top Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, recruits told to play lax in the spring so they'll get "better" at their sports? NO. Only in Lacrosse should you play "Football" in the fall to get better at Lacrosse. Where is the logic? Why are none of these other coaches in other sports saying these things? HS aged athletes should play what they like. If its three sports, great. If it's one, that's great too.
Now to be clear, I am talking about HS aged athletes only. I agree little kids should be trying different things. If for no other reason than the over use issue.

I think that all Maryland teams with a "U" designation are middle schoolers only. HS teams are by graduation year just like LI.

However, my understanding is...

U15AA is mostly new 2018s who reclassified from 2017 at the end of their 1st time attending 8th grade

U15A is actual 2018s from birth paired with 2019s who are too old for U13 (U15A approximates U14)

It is fact that says if you play other sports it help build better motor skills. Playing one sport will hurt the sport the child could be best at. Look it up. Look at the best athletes in any sport they played multiple sports as kids.

I beg to differ, these boys from the Crabs was a U15 team with new uniforms attested by several of the parents from MD.

Skill wise, lacrosse all year has its advantages

Athletically, lacrosse all year is fine (especially supplemented with the right strength and conditioning program)

Mentally, there are toughness attributes that a typical prep school, travel club kid does not have and will not gain on the lacrosse field. This is the differentiating factor for a multisport athlete. Football, Wrestling, Hockey and Basketball offer this (preferred sports in that order)

Football is 95% practice and only 5% games. Mostly pain, limited gain.

How many D1 Top 30 college football, wrestling, hockey and basketball coaches are telling high school recruits that they should be playing other sports?

I sugest that you go check the rosters of the top college programs in the sports that you mention. What percent of the players came out of private / prep high schools? What percent played for a "club" team?

Also, what percent of the top athletes competed only with their town team?

Sooo, Tiger Woods became the golfer he was before he went nuts, by playing Lax??? Phelps became the swimmer he is by playing football? The Williams sisters honed their tennis skills playing which sport? Do you see how silly you sound?

yes, at the younger ages. as they approach HS I would say no.

That said, I hope my kid can play more than one sport at the HS level.

Yes you can specialize in Lacrosse and be tough. You do not have to be a two sport athlete to succeed. However, playing football gives you a toughness and commitment leg up on those who play only lacrosse.

Look at some D1 Lacrosse player bios

Duke for example:
- Fowler - football/wrestling
- Duprey - football/hockey
- Lobb - basketball/soccer
- Hipps - football (texas)
- Jones - football/basketball
- Haus - football

Those kids mentioned above played those other sports because they wanted to and liked them. It is doubtful they played to get better at lax. Further, they are all guys who had the god given athletic gifts. No amount of football made them any better at lax. Its just the opposite of what you're saying. The athletic gift allowed them to play multiple sports at a high level. Playing one sport didn't make them better at the other.
