Post Graduate. I believe it was originally used by wealthy families whose kids didn’t have the grade coming out of HS to get into elite universities. It than became a way for student athletes who didn’t have the grades to get into a college even with the help of a coach. Many athletes from many sports use the PG year in order to get into college. Many college coaches would like all of their recruits to do a PG year. Aside from this Stanford story.. While prep schools happen for kids from wealthy and non traditional hot beds for lacrosse, the PG year is not necessarily common. If you have a good player and student that already plays in a hot bed why would you waste the 70k and take the kid away from friends and family?

If you have a good player and student that already plays in a hot bed why would you waste the 70k and take the kid away from friends and family? It seems that PGing is more common on the boys side and whether from a hotbed or not it is a way for the kid to improve their grades and test scores so the coach can get the kid through admissions at the most competitive universities. I believe that in the vast majority of cases the player will have a commitment from the college coach before doing the PG year. They go in knowing that they will be attending Duke, Yale, Princeton, Harvard etc… I do not believe many are paying full freight. I’m sure for some (especially boys) it is a great opportunity even if it is not used to get into one of the most competitive universities. Late bloomers are much more common with boys the extra year to mature academically, physically and socially can be beneficial especially for a kid that is young for the grade.

Stop the crying about post graduate schools, they have been around for over a hundred years! Look at the link a poster put in the thread to get an idea of the countless ones out there. Sure, they have been mostly a hammerhead for the wealthier people to get their kids into better schools. They are now commonly used in basketball, football, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming, field hockey, etc to get kids academics up so they don't fail out freshman year. It's an extra year that is often covered by large scholarships for families without the means. The rich pay the full cost and make large donations, that money helps cover the scholarships to needier kids. It's really the same as college admissions, admissions are based on a combination of academic and athletic merit for some kids. If your looking to get athletic scholarship $ from colleges, learn what tools are out there. If your a top level player, then coaches will do what they can to get the best players, their job depends on it!.
News flash, there is 100 times more academic money available than athletic scholarships. Sports can open some doors for kids that academics won't, but there are only 8-10 spots for each college lacrosse class versus 1,500 spots for an entire freshman class at an elite college. Where is the kids time better spent, on the wall or at a desk? It is different for every kid and takes real perspective and honest conversations with your kid.
IMHO, most of the venom on this site is just from frustrated parents that have had their head in the sand for 10 years as they dream of their girl getting paid to go to an elite university. Let your fantasy go and let your daughter enjoy a great ride that has a lot of bumps and turns, but is full of great life lessons and your daughter will have been surrounded with terrific group of young women. Sorry to be preachy, but lacrosse is full of amazing young women that often gets lost in the recruiting craziness.

If their daughter doesn’t make a team or get selected to an event or get ranked by Inside Lacrosse they cry foul. When their daughter doesn’t receive offers from the top Lacrosse programs these parents will come up with excuses as well.

Recruited to top programs, and play. The have always made the lists and special teams. I still am not a fan of those who game the system to get an advantage over others. It’s called character.

I don’t think a coach is going to tell their players what they have going on that’s more important than their job. If you sign on to coach, you make that commitment and stick to it. You show up no questions asked.

Prep schools are already well established. Some are more prominent as hockey while others are good at basketball and other sports. I can only think of one male lacrosse school- Trinity Pawling. I’m not saying there aren’t ones for the girls but don’t know of any. I always thought that a good amount of the kids were choosing to go to prep because 1. They were wealthy and 2.weren’t from a traditional hot bed and wanted to increase their competition and exposure

The PG year has been around for a while and only becoming more of a factor for athletes. IMG already blurs the line about academics before athletics at the high school level. There are more IMG's coming, they could and probably should franchise north and west(haha).
I don't mean to make IMG out as evil. The private, prep, and/or parochial high schools all recruit their region just like a college does and charges money to play there. Look at the top 10 rankings of the major sports in any state now and only 2-5 are public schools. I looking at you LI and MD.
It will never be fair to a lot of the parents. The best way to level the field is simple. Practice, practice and smart training while the other kids are on their phones. The formula for success hasn't changed in 100 years, just more helicopter parents throwing money at clubs believing the promises.

Do you really think that IMG could grab girls from traditional hot beds and convince their parents to pay? Its crazy to think about because non revenue sports don’t have much athletic scholarship $$ and the ivy and Nescac don’t give money unless need based.

IMG is overrated I just did some research and I can’t see IMG doing much with Wonens lax. They may have placed a few girls but nothing crazy. They do all sports and appear to be more focused on baseball and a few other sports. They are buying up land around the original campus so wouldn’t be suprised to eventually see some building but nothing imminent. Traditional hot beds would have no reason to look down there at this time.

Don’t you all realize that nobody cares about girls lacrosse. There are no scholarships for girls to attend PG years. If you can afford that great! A luxury for the well off. Otherwise play your card and send your daughter to the best school she can attend academically. Will pay off the rest of her life!

I must say…the chatter about PG years is comical. My son went….not for a sport… but Bc he struggled in school snd needed some guidance. He played lacrosse but did not play in college. The judgements here are unbelievable. No one has any idea what others are going through. Keep it positive….especially now.

I must say…the chatter about PG years is comical. My son went….not for a sport… but Bc he struggled in school snd needed some guidance. He played lacrosse but did not play in college. The judgements here are unbelievable. No one has any idea what others are going through. Keep it positive….especially now. This is a lax board and they are talking about pg to play lax but thanks for offering nothing to the board. Not negative, Just a discussion about Preps and recruiting. However, isn’t PG and re-classifying two different conversations pertaining to this. PG done after recruiting age and re-classifying or repeating grade done before recruiting age?

Anyone have thoughts on the JR open ? Is it worth it ? I like this set up. Best in Class event looks skilled too. Thinking about these over American Select if coaches will be there.

Amazed by this discussion, the amount of class envoy is astounding as is the apparent concern some folks have about what others choose to do or how others choose to spend their money.

It’s not envy. Just talking about advantages that can be bought in this respect. It’s like everything else. It’s facts that this goes on, nothing wrong with discussing the advantages. I think people accept this is facts of life about money buying advantages. The real discussion should be at youth level and making it more fair starting out of the gate. Give kids equal opportunity and make youth age based.

Yep- expect YJ, 91, and any other teams with. mom/dad coaches to have their kids on those rosters solely because they are the coach. Their kids will be among the weaker at the event.
91 coach doesn’t even show up to practices so her daughter making a team is the least of the concerns.
Is this the same coach that was at YJ
Yes she was a yellow jacket coach, went to bandits, and now is merged with 91
Is there an explanation behind why she isn’t showing up?
I'm sorry are we surprised that there are issues with 91 or parent coaches netiher are even remotely surprising.

She knows her stuff and the girls really like her. Enough with the bashing. 91 will surprise some people this year.

While I think youth sports should be calendar year age based you will still have kids born on January 1 and kids born on December 31 and ever day inbetween. Age based rules would make it better but the people who complain would find something else to complain about.

They are an expensive weekend and take you away from what’s important.

Omg !enough already with the bashing of other coaches and programs. Worry about yourself. This has been going on for months. I was personally enjoying the recent information exchange that didn’t include any personal attacks. It might be entertaining for some but this anonymous forum shouldn’t be the place to attempt to right a wrong done to you. Say it to their face and move on.

Does anyone have any clue who will be the next head coach for Pricenton women's lacrosse after Chris Sailer? Thank you !! Definitely one of the assistants….it was time! Does anyone know what happened down at Wofford with the head coach? Do you mean Winthrop??? because they no longer have a coaching staff. They are in the process of hiring but not sure with the staff that was there prior. Kara Concheck is the new Winthrop HC Not sure what happened to the last one. She may have stepped away for personal reasons.

Girls don’t normally do these during heavy prospect years. There are better ways to get in front of coaches.
