Who are these 2 players? Would love to compare as an outsider and not the players dad.

All players need to learn to continue to compete at all tryouts even when they have been a part of a team for many years. If a player makes a team and is the last one on the depth chart and knows that, then he needs to work hard to move up the depth chart during the course of the season or they will open themselves up to be replaced. It’s simple, make a difference when you are on the field and make it difficult for the coach to replace you.

Competitive club teams will always have new players show up to tryouts and they will take your kids spot if he doesn’t make a difference.

My observation through the last year is that there seems to be a ton of talent these days nationally, perhaps more so than even just a few years ago.

Yes, local players make up a much smaller percentage of the top 10-20 starting rosters or D1 AA lists than in the past. Athletes are bigger and faster and the game is less parochial than before. You will see more Mid-Atlantic (MIAA) kids on a percentage basis at the starting keeper and attack positions than midfield and D as the the latter positions are dominated by the tall and fast athletes less dependent on lax IQ and years of experience.

It also doesn’t help that these days a number of club coaches are more about their ‘brand’ then the kids they coach. Look at 91MD. That guy never misses a chance to promote himself. It’s all about look at me when I played 20 years ago instead of look at the kids I coach.

MM is ALWAYS shopping positions to upgrade. No loyalty or development to the players he chooses each year. If he can replace a player tomorrow(literally) with a better, more athletic player he will. He will use that players dues to make it more cost effective for an out of state players commute. That is how the team was built and why there has been so much turn-over. Its all about the wins and "look at how awesome of a coach I am for winning". Then posts a big old team selfie where his block head covers half the team. Parents and players that get away from that guy live a much happier, less complicated life afterwards. #family #development #BS

I think the difference in the arguments is not about the tryouts at all, it is about coaches who fly players in from out of state that they find during their camps, who rarely practice with the team and those players continually take another players spot who has been practicing at all the practices and was chosen by the coach during tryouts. Coaches that add to the roster in the middle of the season because a player they chose is not as developed or physically mature as they were hoping for. What High School and College "high level coaches" have that luxury? It is the bad part of club lacrosse that some of these guys bring to the game! You can call that player development, but it is nothing more than opportunistic! It is ALL about "brand" marketing via fielding a team full of the most mature athletes the country has to offer.

And if the kid gets replaced because the coach wants to do a buddy a favor and it has nothing to do with skill, just walk away quietly knowing you are better off having revealed the true character of the coach. You should have known from the behavior of the other guy, the goalie coach, that it’s their program and your kid plays or doesn’t play based on what side of the bed they woke up on.

No one should have an issue with a team adding kids through the tryout process. From my perspective, when you set your roster just after tryouts, it needs to be a two way commitment between the coach and the kids. A coach adding players after tryouts, sends a horrible message (win at all cost & it's all about me). Set a roster in August so the kids know who they are competing against day in and day out, and don't undermine that commitment by bringing other kids in during the season.

I think the only way you should be able to bring on new players is when you have a "National team" Meaning you have a team from tryouts and have 3 or 4 tournaments. Then if you want to add players to this group, you should rename the team and play under this name in a additional tournament. That way everyone knows the deal.

Or just be honest with the families and players by saying kids could be added throughout the year but the current roster stays on til the next tryout whether it's 6 or 12 months away. If my family had to move or it was a terrible team situation, it would stink to tell a kid he can't join another team.

Hypothetically:
You are a club owner and/or coach.
You have trained and developed a kid to perfectly reflect your mold and he does everything asked and performs great on the field.
You have to choose between the kid you developed and a new kid who may be older, but not much difference in size or skill.
Do you go with the new kid or stick with the kid you developed?

Do you work in media? This is a very leading and poorly framed hypothetical used to try to prove a point you think you already have an opinion on. The issue is your framing of "not much difference in size or skill." If there were truly not much or no difference the player who knows the O and D would be the clear choice. IQ is the most important trait in this game. However, coaches see differences that parents can't. Therefore when they bring in a new player they do see a difference. Size can be overrated but not IQ and skill. Coaches, like MM know gamers when they see them.

Not a MM situation we’re talking about. I agree MM knows talent when he sees it. Then he buys talent a plane ticket and tells the local kid to not bother showing up.

What if the difference is that the parents of the holdback are more connected in the lacrosse and business community?

Do you as the coach or club owner admit your years of development of a kid into the player you want is not as important as gaining a business or lacrosse connection?

Well if the club helped your son become a better lacrosse player that is what you paid for. The playing time and who plays where and when is up to the coach that day. The clubs job is to make your son a good lacrosse player. If he is not playing in games take him and his skills to another club or to showcases / prospect days. Or even better take him to high school tryouts this spring and see him make the team. This age group parents will talk about a lot of new things this time 12 months from today.

My son was passed over at an early age. The team was one he had been on a year prior, they were very young, had only played a year together but had promise to be the best. (Travel is now over so all of this is easier to see). That first year coaches were great, you saw then these kids would all 99% play HS at an elite level and go on from there.

Unfortunately my sons spot was "given" to a political/financial/influential kid. The kid was a hold back and Not from the area nor a stud by any factor.

The boy always found his way onto the "all-star" team's. Never really played but his name was there.

My son used it as a driving factor, he remain friendly with the boys families and coaches (decision was an organization thing). He always played for another team and his friends from the first team would always watch in joy, parents would cheer for him. High school games were always a pleasure seeing the families. I don't even think the other boys school had lacrosse. most boys from that first team moved on to the areas other team, some because of favors holdbacks, but they were all on top teams (maybe top 1/2/3) in the country

One day, I received an email, from a parent from that team, (. Many of us dads had been talking a week prior at an event. We said it was a shame the boys never stayed together. I said yeah, but it sure worked out for us, didn't it. The next day I got the email, the email listed about 10 prestigious high profile things the dad was involved with in the sport of lacrosse. Each one detailing how he bought his sons way onto things.

Our Boys High school years are over, I admitt I hate the dad/family, who took my son's spot. But never the kid. my son felt no ill will to the kid. He felt sorry for him.

Both boys were "recruited" one because of the silver spoon one because of the blue collar. Was told the boys committed play day last year his talent was a exposed. Let's see how these next few years will be

That is why I try to help out as much as I can as a dad. It really helps my kid rose to the top of the pile regardless of his attitude, talent or effort. If you had worked harder as a dad maybe your kid could have made all star teams too.

Exactly. Some people will always pave the way for their kid - hovering like helicopters . They will mow down anyone or anything that gets in their kid's way, they will make sure their kid makes every team and has every advantage. But it only works for so long. Because eventually the kid will be on a team that dad and mom can't control. Everyone sees it. Even the kid knows it. And the message being sent to the kid? I don't really think you're good enough -- so I have to do this for you.

I hope the boys, who are now high school age, don't read this stuff. I'm older and my kids are pretty good, but not going to Hopkins to play lacrosse, but hopefully it will help get into a school HE wants to go to.. You DAD's that work real hard for your kid, get a life and save money for college. If you guys hate MM so much, go play for some other team, wait a minute, your not playing your kid is. Why not ask him who he wants to play for. Hold backs should only be for education. Your sons probably like there classmates and will miss them, unless they are already as crazy as you. Have some fun. I waste my money just like you on clubs. They have way to many now. First year of High School is tough enough on the boys, lighten up Francis.

Whats the deal with the Dukes 2022 lacrosse team? Does anyone know how they work? Can you play with your current club team and them? Are they still looking for players?

Depends on what position you play. My son is a defender so as far as I am concerned that position is full. But I definitely think we need help on offense. If your son can score please reach out.

Dukes Nationals stops at 8th grade. The 2022 Dukes are just another club team with some out of state kids sprinkled in.

So that team doesn’t let players just play when they are available anymore? Who is the main contact?

I've written multiple checks to Millon. My son wanted to attend his camps - he believed the instruction was useful and the camps were generally well run. That ended last year after some of the things Millon said to my son at a camp - along the lines that my son should quit lacrosse. Which is funny since my son was invited to play on 91MD during one of Millon's camps. As my son put it: Millon is just an butt sometimes. I'm sure my son would still get benefit from some of the camps, but why support Millon when there are so many great alternatives? Ultimately, I left it to my son and he decided to avoid Millon camps and teams going forward.

Dumb question but do you really write checks?? Who does that anymore? I have heard many coaches use different tactics to motivate players. Telling them they should quit does not really mean that. After all, does he not want more of your checks? I am sure he was motivating the kids. May not be for all kids but he has coached for a long time. There is something to it.

All the best coaches encourage kids by telling them to quit the sport.

I was told they needed a few more close defenders, due to lack of talent. Contact is on their webpage.

Legacy rebels probably sixth best team on LI alone. Rankings are terrible. MD riughriders should probably be 4 on list. Some of those teams are just plain bad on this list. Some teams are left off that are a lot better. Smash would beat express by 5 goals easy.

I am not sure why Dukes would be listed on any of the rankings. Most of their players are on other teams listed.
No Crabs in another. I think RR won the Crabs tourney and beat most the teams ranked above them. 3 teams at the top are correct after that the list needs some editing.
